I just litter flashlights around the house - they range from 300 to 3,000 Lumens. I was going to light up the stairs with string lights but decided not to. We don't have any outlets in the hallway nor on the stairs. The other headache was the Ileostomy bag which I had to hold with one hand which meant that I couldn't use the railing.

It is amazing how far flashlights have come. I have a cheap one that lights up my mutts in the backyard like a spotlight.

The head lamps are good at freeing up a hand. I have an older one that has been very useful on occasion ... like going up into the attic.

There was a research paper two years ago detailing the stuff that floats around in the blood that causes this.

I am not sure what paper you are referring to.

Platinum-based chemotherapy causes neuropathy because platinum is a heavy metal (like lead and mercury) that binds to DNA in the sensory nerve cell and causes the cell to go into suicide mode.
Vincristine causes neuropathy by binding microtubules in nerve cell processes so they can't facilitate transport of nutrients along the nerve
Taxol does a similar thing to vincristine.

Maybe you are referring to oxaliplatin where the oxalate molecules separate from the platinum and bind up Calcium in your blood stream leading to a bunch of funny symptoms like cold-induced pins and needles.

Well the drug I had was oxliplatin and yes, I get cold-induced pins and needles. The paper was from an Indian source but I didn't save a link to it.

I remember a company coming to me a long time ago with a great idea to stop the oxaliplatin neuropathy, but it was really just stopping the oxalate-Calcium binding. I told them if it doesn't prevent the platinum toxicity, its not going to really fix the problem since the oxalate related symptoms get better and the platinum based toxicity lingers.
Needless to say the treatment didn't really go anywhere.

My major hope is that someday we can fix these cancers with less nasty chemo and no more radiotherapy. But not there yet unfortunately.

The NCI has a therapy that might have worked for me. It works on KRAS G12D and KRAS G12V only and the patient has to have one of a handful of alleles. The odds for me are about 1/3rd. It's an immunotherapy approach where they take your white blood cells, modify them to recognize a receptor (the mutation) and kills the cells identified. They grow a bunch of these cells in a lab, then inject them back into you. I've chatted with the lady that this was done on in the article. I think that the trial was for Stage 4 patients at the time and I didn't read about it until later on. I also only found my mutation after Neo-Adjuvant Chemo and Radiation. Dana Farber has a cell-manufacturing lab now so it may be that this can be done outside NCI. My son told me that he was doing some work for a cell engineering group where he works - not sure it's the same thing and he couldn't provide more details.

Well admittedly the radiation from the CT scan is a drop in the bucket compared to therapeutic doses of radiotherapy. It won't be enough to increase your risk above what's already there. And the latency is decades so its more a problem with adult survivors of childhood cancer rather than senior survivors of adult cancer.

The neuropathy thing on the other hand is a PITA. I see lots of that and it can really bugger up one's tennis game.

Thanks for the information! As for the neuropathy, I got lucky. It's minor now, and just a bit in the balls of my feet, not the toes. The rib pain is...a pain, but easy to ameliorate. I came off the court from a tennis lesson today in Mijas and... nothing hurt anywhere. Amazing. Thanks again about the rad info.

Hey guys. Just turned 64. Play only singles. All my hitting partners are mid 30’s to late 40’s, 4.0. I play 3-4 times a week. Hour and a half each session. Usually hit for 20 minutes. Then play a match.

So, anyone else have sore aching joints....knees, legs? I’ll soak in a very warm bath, do stretches, put on aspercream on my knees. Wrap my knees when playing. I do need to drop at least 10-14 pounds to make it easier on my body. Anyone else stiff and aching? Also using Aleve and Captain Morgan to ease the pain.

I got in 2.5 miles, 45 minutes of weights and an hour of tennis yesterday. I've been cranking up the weights the past two weeks and the number of aches and pains from everyday life have decreased. So the increased weight is hitting stability muscles. The guy I hit with is 68 and he was slower than usual and he remarked that he doesn't play well in evenings. He plays tennis to maintain fitness but I was surprised that he wasn't moving as hard on shots. We normally play earlier in the day.

My feeling is that you have to do fitness training to play tennis and not the other way around but there are those that do well on tennis alone - but I think that only works up to a point - or an age. I do need to find a few additional people to hit with, perhaps younger adults. I stopped at a club yesterday to pick up my strings and chatted with the desk person for 30 minutes. A small chain bought out the club and they're going to do a lot of construction projects as it has the 60s look and hadn't done well financially. I think that it's a considerable challenge getting tennis back in our city but they're going to give it a try.

CAR-T cell therapy is a big thing right now. Great results in some leukemias. Really costly technology though and not without side effects. But I think immunotherapy in general, if it can be harnessed properly will be a big advance in oncology. Right now I see some nasty neuropathies with current immunotherapies so its far from perfected.

I chat with people on Keytruda and it's not the miracle drug that it was for Jimmy Carter. It can work well for some and yes, it is very expensive. I asked my oncologist and he said that the success ratios aren't that great for it.

The NCI stuff is custom-designed for the individual - not a manufactured drug - so costs are a lot higher right now. The allele restrictions are quite a problem too. I think that they are looking at using cells from one patient for use in others but I don't know how well this will work. My understanding is that there weren't any side-effects using this NCI technology on the original patient. It would be an immense amount of work to extrapolate this to the hundreds of other mutations out there. The key was identifying a marker on the cell surface. This is the problem with KRAS, NRAS, HRAS and why it's been undruggable for decades.

Stupid old man issue. My knee had been feeling a lot better so in my Men's Doubles yesterday I decide to "be more active" at the net especially with fakes. I Split hop at the sound of my partner serving to one side or the other to give the returner a different look as the ball is coming in. Then I'd either take off the opposite direction or stay. Really worked well as a tactic to frustrate the returner and we got a lot of missed returns out of it. But at the end of 2 hrs of play my knee started paining again and still is bothering me today. Could barely stand up off the toilet seat this morning.

Hopping - not an old man thing.

So finished off my return to competitive tennis. We lost in the playoffs to the good young team as expected. However this time I won a close match instead of losing a close match. In matches where my opponent and me were pretty evenly matched I went 3-1, which is good considering my serve is crap at the moment. Wrist is improving (down to 2 braces!) so I hope to be able to practice my serve this summer and get it to where it's not an actual liability. Look forward to getting back to dubs again (played only singles in league). Moving great, really can't complain.

Was in San Diego with my daughter for a long weekend for a family funeral (boo) but also to check out UCSD. Got to hit with my brother and cousin a bit which was fun since my cousin is a former minor league pro player (#700's/400's) who still hits a great ball. Had some great 1 on 1 hitting with him, my kid video'd a minute of us hitting 2-1 (bro on left, cuz on right). Bro is coming off knee surgery, first time he hit in 5 months!

That's what happens.

I'm going to be hitting with two retired guys. One was a former CMU player and he had a hip or knee replacement last year so he should be interesting to hit with. He's a really smart player but he has fantastic volleying skills. The other was a former football player and was our local high-school tennis coach for a long time. He hits very heavy balls but they are predictable as to where they go. He either has had back or knee surgery recently. He has to fix the unfixed one at some point.

I am going to look for younger players to hit with but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. My approach will likely be to ask the older guys if they know younger players. I might wind up joining a different club where there are far more younger players including juniors. I'd love to be a hitting dummy for lessons too. I did that in college for a coach.

Yeah it's to the point I'm one of the 'young' guys in my hitting group. The youngest is early 40's. I love the guys I hit with but I need to find someone to hit with who will push me pace and speed wise. When I hit 1 on 1 with the cousin I was being pushed around/late and he wasn't even trying. Gotta get used to pace if I want to improve lol.

Very good ... enjoy your hit.

Yeah ... my tennis circle has shrunk and aged, and missing a lot of original equipment. One friend I'm playing doubles with tomorrow has had both knees replaced. I was at my last club for around 15 years, and I was the younger end of the our group (doubles leagues, USTA). I started around early 40s, oldest end of group 60-65. I'm 61 now, so the one's still playing are fossils. In all my years at the club, no young players really followed us replinishing our group/level. Man ... looking back I was very lucky to have that every week for years. I knew it, because I had friends that moved and were never able to replace it ... friends you have known and played with for years.

I haven't wanted to join a club again because my indoor vision was too much of a struggle to enjoy it ... so I no longer have that option to meet new players to hit with. USTA is always an option, but recent injuries have made me avoid it. You need to find a 34 year old "rookie" like I did ... good enough for a hit, but not good enough to run me. 8-B

Does it swell in response to something [ie playing tennis] or it just happened apropos of nothing?

Are you sure it's not water retention? Hopefully it's not an edema or internal bleeding.

Acupuncture is supposed to help with circulation. But you'll want to get the swelling down first; have you tried icing it?

I would think heat, massage, and electro-stim would also help with circulation.

If the swelling is visible to you in the ankle area, the four or five inches above the ankle bone, it's definitely a good idea to have it checked out. I'm no expert, but that's the first thing cardiologists seem to check when they look at the body, as opposed the technical data gathered.

Just put that last FH on a loop. 8-B(y)

Yep ... I had a couple of concessions lately 1) more doubles  2) more Aleve. My right big toe hallux limitus is silent no more with only turmeric and biofreeze ... and the cbd cream thing was a bust several months ago. I took Aleve 3 days in a row just to compare results to turmeric (I normally take 2 500 mg turmeric capsules in the morning) ... and Aleve was noticeably better. So plan is Aleve only on match day (maybe ball machine day ???), ice toe after ... and turmeric other days. Toe is no big deal on court, but it's a progressive risk.

Regular doubles setup for Thursdays, and working on 2nd regular doubles earlier in week. More options when friends USTA leagues ends in a couple of weeks.

I'm not sure what will be harder on my stomach ... doubles or Aleve or 3 of my old friends at the same time.

Does Aleve really bother your stomach or are you repeating what everyone says?

With my chronic groin injury I took ibuprofen daily for years (still take it a lot)...while drinking a fair amount (not so much now lol) which according to everyone is a recipe for disaster...never had stomach problems - kidney, liver bloodwork always came back fine. I've read on here people take 2 and have immediate stomach pain!

As far as my topical cbd...doesn't seem as effective as ibuprofen (for inflammation). I have found edible cbd to be good for relaxation and sleep.

Longer version of practice. It was what we call a 3 ball practice where we usually feed and have one return, then just hit out. Some good shots and still some easy ball misses. Was trying to do a higher kick ball then flattening a ball out, so some a bit long and some dumps in the net. But I did get to unload on a few for fun.
