Serena and her insane power!

The-Champ

I stumbled upon a video of Serena hitting insanely hard FHs, especially on the returns. She must have been really irritated of Ivanovic's ajdeeee (c'mons) on every point! I know a lot of you out there hate Serena, but damn, you just have to admire that power. I've said before that once Serena replaces one of those 10 bags of potato chips she eats for breakfast, with a carrot, she would be GOAT.

Which player/players (past or present) do you think matches Serena in terms of power?

Serena wouldnt have anymore than 4 slams if she played in any other era in womens tennis history given her lack of fitness and commitment to the sport. In the era of sharks like Graf, Seles, Navratilova, Evert, Mandlikova, even Sanchez Vicario she would be taken apart most times. Hingis the lightweight with her puffball serve, powerless game, poor overall forehand, and weak mental game was still an even opponent for Serena back when Hingis was healthy.

Hitting hard alone isnt enough. Lucic may have hit even harder than Serena and she achieved nothing in her career other than a fluke Wimbledon semi.

Lucic made a Wimbledon Semi?

Serena has as much power as any woman player ever, save for Seles. She'd definetly still be a multiple slam winner in another era, tho not as many as she has won in this era. maybe.

Lucic made a Wimbledon semi in 1999. She got there by defeating grass court clueless Monica Seles in straight sets in the 3rd round, then by defeating the previous years finalist Natalie Tauziat in 3 sets in the quarters. She then took Steffi Graf to 3 sets in her final ever Wimbledon in the semis before falling.

Among just the fairly recent elite players Serena, Venus, Davenport, Graf, Navratilova, and maybe even Pierce all hit harder than Seles IMO (when you factor in the serve as well) so already I can tell we have a difference in viewpoint there.

Serena of 2002-2003 was incredible and yes would win slams in any era but that is the only Serena that would win slams in any era. The 2005-2009 Serena that won 4 slams would win absolutely zippo in another era, heck she couldnt even win any slams since 2003 with Justine Henin in the field. The first 2 of those 4 she won Henin missed, and the latter two since Henin retired. She also failed to beat Henin in a slam event since 2003.

No problem. Lucic was an insanely hard hitter. She was completely overpowering both Seles and Graf in her matches with both at Wimbledon, and the matches were close and she lost to Graf only because of all the unforced errors. Granted this was Seles on grass where she is half the player she is on her best surfaces, and Graf injured and way past her prime, but still very impressive.
