Serena: beaten by lucky shots

Australia’s Samantha Stosur, winner of 22 WTA doubles titles and no singles titles, provided the biggest stunner though, beating Serena Williams.

“It’s one of the biggest, if not the biggest win of my career,” Stosur said of her 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over the Wimbledon champion. “We don’t always play our best tennis every single day. Maybe she didn’t play her best and I played very well.”

Despite having four match points, Stosur lost her previous meeting with Williams in three sets in Sydney earlier this season. She also faced the Williams’ sisters in the doubles finals at Wimbledon.

“She had a lot of lucky shots; she’s a good framer,” said Williams, who has won 34 Tour singles titles, including 11 Grand Slam titles. “But it’s obviously all talent. She’s mastered that.”

Right. A much smaller player beats you in the next week, she must be lucky.

You're number 1 this year in my book, Serena, but I won't give you any sportsmanship awards, sorry.

I watched that match, Stosur beat her in every aspect of the game , serena couldnt overpower her which led to lack of motivation and in the third set Serena was already beaten mentally

I do indeed feel that Stosur is really underated. She reached the SF's of the French, she has an excellent kick serve which works well on the red stuff. Not to forget her BIG biceps. She had meningitis last year or the year before. She's a real fighter, more WTA pros should look up to her.

meh, a little immature... sure. But, let's face, if they play at the US, Serena wins 6-1, 6-0... PERIOD:).

“She played well and didn’t do anything bad,” Williams said. “She went for broke and struck all her balls as hard as she could. She never lets you get into a rhythm.”

if ur gonna quote serena, use the whole thing OP. just not 1/10 of it. Sheesh! did u even read the whole article, or just the first sentence?

she can never admit that the other player played better than her... reason i have no respect for her game

Exactly.

Remember her match with Henin at the 2007 US Open?

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breaki...a_blames_blunders,_Henin_lucky_shots_for_loss

NEW YORK -- Ungracious in lopsided defeat, a grumpy Serena Williams humiliated herself with terse words Tuesday after Justine Henin humbled her on the court in a US Open quarterfinal.

Giving no credit where credit was due after Henin spanked her 7-6 (7/3), 6-1 in 97 minutes, the eighth-seeded American and reigning Australian Open champion moped through a session with the media to avoid being fined by the WTA.

"I really don't feel like talking about it. I don't want to get fined. That's the only reason I came," she admitted. "I can't afford the fines because I keep losing."

Henin improved to 6-6 lifetime against the younger Williams sister after ousting Serena from a third consecutive Grand Slam, having also dispatched her in the quarter-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.

"I think she played better. I think she made a lot of lucky shots and I made a lot of errors," Serena Williams said. “I don't think my level dropped.”

Why do you think Serena is the mentally toughest player ever in WTA ?
She does not go to selfpity if she looses. She still thinks (knows) she is da best and then might blame her loss on something else than herself. She knows she cannot loose if she plays on equal terms with her opponent. .soo sometimes her opponents just get lucky (not in Grand Slams though).

With Richard Williams as a dad, I guess we shouldn't be surprised...

It's a sad commentary on the WTA tour when the two topics that bring the most discussion are lack of sportmanship and grunting/shrieking...

wat does the "richard williams as a dad" thing supposed to mean?

serena is a joke. so is her dad for that matter. i've never seen a more sore loser in all of sports.

i dont follow womens tennis too much, so could u give me an example plz?

in several instances, he exaggerates an extremely minor injury to venus/serena to an extreme point by making ridiculous quotes (her career might be in jeopardy). he'll say anything to bring attention to himself/his daughters when nobody is talking about him/them.

i'll never forget the time that idiot held up a sign in the final of miami (in '99 i think) which said something like "It's a Williams sisters party and nobody else is invited". he's a clown.

But he was also right when he said he two daughters would dominate women's tennis, and everyone thought he was a fool.

I admit he says some shady stuff, but give him credit for the WS's panning out and him being right a/b them.

of course i give him credit about his daughters. you can't deny that. however when you continue to make outrageous claims, you are bound to be right about one of them.

Who is this 'everyone' you speak of? The fact that he kept the girls out of the typical USTA tournaments made it hard to gauge how good they really were going to be. But once they started playing pro events, most people saw their athleticism.

A few 'shady' statements? That's some nice spin.

How long do you have? Here are some of the better ones:

1. Lied about being a 'multi-millionaire' before the Sisters started making money.
2. Misrepresented the fact that he was there only coach - they went to Bolleteri's Academy in their teens.
3. Made anti-Jewish statements about 'guys with last names ending in 'berg' and 'stein' buying up all of Compton' (this when he lied about being a 'major real estate investor in Southern California - see #1).

Oh, and the end of his 2nd marriage - Oracene - was the result of him breaking 3 of her ribs... great guy!

This is why WTA is a joke. Serena can totally arse it in Tier-1 events, and then kick everyone's ass in a slam. You would not see this on the ATP.

It takes consistency to be the number 1 player in the world, something serena lacks. She cannot put together two tournaments in a row.

People say she is mentally strong but she is one of the weakest. Look at how she handled the henin incident. She completely broke down because she didnt get a first serve. One bad call or any adversity and she collapses.

She also lost to a journeywoman player in three sets, mentally strong and physically superior players dont let that happen.

Btw, will safina end the year at number 1 since serena cant really gain any more points? It would be nice to see safina equal serena's year ending #1 ranking.

Wow what a B****! Strosur even talked her self down, then Serena put Strosur right into the ditch, wow!

Basically the Williams sisters make a mockery of the entire tour. They barely can win any Tier-1 titles for years, but rack up the slams and get Craig Hickman to hector the WTA for not giving them the #1 ranking. Meanwhile the rest of us just laugh at all of them.

How has Venus dominated womens tennis? Serena maybe, Venus no. Venus is so non dominant that she has never won 2 of the 4 womens majors, she hasnt even been to the final a 3rd since 2002 now, and a player who retired at only 25 still has the same # of singles slams as her and a more balanced and superior overall career. In 2000 and 2001 she dominated a 3 month stretch each time, and fared horribly or was injured most of the rest of the year, that is not true dominance. In 2002 she played second fiddle to her sister, and in 2003 she played third fiddle to her sister and Henin. In 2004 and 2006 she wasnt even one of the top 10 player of the year (not just ranking but in practical terms, only 1 slam quarterfinal each year), in 2005 she was a top 2-3 player on fast surfaces and non existent elsewhere. In 2007 she was overshadowed by Henin and to a lesser degree her sister. In 2008 she was again non existant until Wimbledon and outside of Wimbledon from there was overshadowed by Venus, and even by the Henin retirement talk ongoing. In 2009 she has not yet won a slam.

Serena has at times (far from all the time) dominated womens tennis, actually never while a prime Justine was around but still has in some ways been a dominant force. Venus has never been this. The only period she might have dominated was a year period where she got unlucky for Serena to peak at the same point and she became Serena's lapdog for the whole year.

Serena is mentally strong. Don't question that. Remember the run to the AO title in 2005 and 2007? Showed plenty of mental strengths in those tourneys, so don't question that. Heck did you even watch Wimbledon vs Dementieva? I don't see how you question her mental stregth.

You're overanalyzing.

They have been the predominant forces in women's tennis for the past 10 years now. A lot of players have come and gone, but they're both still around and top 5. That's impressive. Dominate, no, but they've been contenders for 10 years now. Something no one believed was possible.

You are right. Serena is very mentally strong. In fact she is the only women player of this era who is, other than Venus when she doesnt play Serena. Henin and Sharapova are both vastly overrated in mental toughness, they are mediocre at best in that area and win more through their tennis game than any grand mental steeliness. They are made to look mentally tough though by some of the mental midgets they make big comebacks against who are so frail mentally they make them look tough by comparision.

Why do people criticise Richard Williams so much. I think he had a lot to do with creating two of the greatest players WTA has seen.

That being said... Serena is definately a sore loser. She's proven that time and time again.

It takes consistency to be the number 1 player in the world, something serena lacks. She cannot put together two tournaments in a row.

Yes so Safina should be number one just based on her famed consistency and mental strength alone. That woman has ice in her veins and you know it. The road to the US Open will have to go through the Safinatorette.

And who can forget the tower of mental strength that was Jankovic? Too bad she retired at the top of her game as the ultimate champion of all time.

Then there is Amelie Mauresmo, who made us forget that Martina Navratilova ever actually left the women's tour. If my life depended on one set of tennis, hell I'll put the racket in Amelie's manly hands any day.

Henin looks like a dog.

Go Serena!

Serena should learn to give credit to her opponents and she should also lose 20 pounds.
I went to see the match at Stanford and Serena doesn't really move well on the court. She was getting short breath every point longer than 5 shots.
Serena is one of the most talented players in the WTA, but it's a shame she doesn't make any effort to be in decent shape, especially if there is no slam involved.
Stosur played a very solid and smart match and she deserved to win IMO.
I like venus way more than Serena. Completely different approach to the game. I really enjoyed watching her playing Sharapova.

you really gonna chime in and try to say that Serena was admitting being outplayed? after calling her opponent a framer? really? we know you love her but com'on. she called her a name BEFORE the compliment, thus removing any meaning of said compliment. she is known for being a sour grape sore loser, everytime.

Then what was the point of Serena even saying what is quoted from the link?

wat does the "richard williams as a dad" thing supposed to mean?

I think people mean that he says stupid things like "Serena hits like a man." He said this at Wimby 09. Totally ridiculous. We all know what happened at the AO when both sisters were spanked (6-1, 6-1 was it?) by one of the least competitive ATP players on tour back-to-back after he a few beers at that time.

That's what that statement is supposed to mean - or at least that is how I interpreted it as.

im not getting into a war with you, i despise serena, you love her. we dont agree, its that simple. Bait another poster, but not me today
hey, at least u admit it. But, newho, i find it really sad that a person can hate someone they've never met as much as some of u posters hate Serena. It's really sad... and puzzling:-|.

Then what was the point of Serena even saying what is quoted from the link?

"Went for broke" is a compliment? It is not a compliment. It is same thing as saying you were lucky.

If you call anyone a "good framer" in the same interview then there is nothing more to say ... compliment? It's insulting to your peers 100%, especially since this was said in a public forum.
