Serena fined $10K

I didn't read the article, but I heard this during the match..
I don't agree at all with the commentator of this match saying that she should be suspended and that this fine is a joke!!
maybe Serena went a bit far.. but WHAT ABOUT the line judge??
shouldn't SHE be DQ'd? or up for review?? obviously many others saw it as NOT a footfault!/?

and $500 for racquet abuse.

what a joke of a fine. good job wta, shows that serena can do whatever she wants and the worst that she can ever receive is a slap on the wrist.

Am glad some action was taken, if just to ensure that no one thinks that they can talk to the lines people that way in the future. Cheers for the link.

may I ask what you are smoking? cause whatever it is, it must be some good stuff.

"maybe" serena went a bit far; maybe? I don't even know what to say about that, stop embarrassing yourself and don't even reply to my post. for all I know, the line judge can be blatantly 300% wrong, and serena was still not warranted to go off on a line judge like that. saying I am going to take this ball and effing shove it up your throat.

maybe she went little too far? well, maybe you are a d-bag then.

10k? Whatever; she can use that to wax her car...or light it up to blow smoke in the faces of those making this appear to be some unprecedented act.

She should be suspended from the AO. What a weak spine the WTA has. This proves you can say anything to a line judge or official and get away with it.

I think she should have got a larger fine so that the poor linesperson got some money for having to deal with that behavior. I think the WTA should suspend her for the Year End Championships.

The Grand Slam committee is still reviewing this to see if further action needs to be taken. I think it would be fair to suspend her from the AO (which would probably be anywhere from a 500K - 1.5 M fine), but I doubt it will happen.

She STILL hasn't apologized, fwiw.

Serena makes roughly 20 - 30 million a year.
$10k is roughly 0.005 to 0.003 percent of her income.
For someone who makes $100k/yr, that's like fining them between $33 and $50.
Or for someone who makes $50k/yr, that's like fining them between $17 and $25.

unfortunately 10K $ is the larger penalty they can give her,but they have opened an investigation and hopefully they will punish her more.

Fining a professional tennis player is stupid. It is just like fining an NBA player for a flagrant foul. It is like a slap on the wrist when you earn more than this in one day. Not to mention there are far better ways to penalize someone than a monetary fine. A better penalty would be not allowing her to play in the doubles final Monday night and suspending her for a length of time. If you can't play well with others, you shouldn't be allowed to play. This is just another example of how bogus penalties are for pros. Somethings never change. :(

Agreed! :)

Quoted for truth

ladies, & gents, can we all agree that WTA is a joke? 10k.....lol, I think a fair fine would be $200,000

call me old school, but 10k is really chump change for any tour players, especially for the top tier tennis pros.

lol, I would have to agree.

I, and almost all of my tennis friends have now lost all respect for Serena. Used to think she was a tough tennis player with an attitude but a good fair player. I know she comes across as pretty ditsy in most interviews and is lacking anything past a 10th grade education but now she's just a poor sport. I don't think I'll be watching her play again. Another nail into the coffin of women's tennis. Thank god we have a real sports leader in Kim!

foot fault or not. poor call or not. its a fact that she screamed at the linesman, swinging her racket at her...no sports condones such behavior. IMPO, she should be banned for her doubles match as well.

I do not think she should be banned form the doubles match because it would be punishing the others and that is not fair for them. They should not suffer for her actions.

Everyone is far too lenient.

Not only should she have been suspended from participating in the US Open women's doubles final match, but Serena should be suspended from WTA for 1 year. I was expecting that she be fined at least $250K, or at least half her earnings at the US Open.

If you read what they've posted at Tennis Channel regarding the 10K fine, officials have already confirmed Serena that she did say "kill" to the lines woman.

It's funny how the spectators who heard Serena yelled out "Yeah, you did!" when she said she didn't say she would kill the lines woman.

All you have to see is the expression of all the spectators behind the lines woman, and spectators at the baseline box near that area to understand why the New York crowd got agitated.

Better yet, maybe they should just turn this over to the NYPD.

He also said the tournament considered - and decided against - preventing Williams and her older sister Venus from participating in the women's doubles final Monday. Venus put in some work on a U.S. Open practice court Sunday; Serena wasn't with her.

so there it goes.Serena will not be defaulted from the tournament.I hope they boo her nonstop all match!

I don't think any kind of a financial punishment will have an effect on Serena's behaviour, even 100 k would be nothing to her. A suspension might do the trick though

They should have a challenge system in place for the foot-fault call. Then players would have a recourse, and no urge to yell at a linesperson.

Now that the challenge system is in place on lines calls, we have no more McEnroe-like outbursts. (It's hard to argue with a machine.)

the WTA has handed down their decision on this, the ITF however has said they will meet on the topic after the USO concludes to decide if further punishment is proper.

Remember guys, the only thing she did above the norm when going off was threatening bodily harm. this could still end up in slam suspension, slam money fined or even police intervention in the end.

Honestly, being a roddick fan, i wouldnt be upset with her if she admitted what was said and apologized. which she hasnt done to date, instead lied about the words she said and refuses to apologize.

What did the WTA say? What was their decision? I didn't hear about it. As far as I heard, only the US Open/USTA had done anything (the 10K fine).
