Serena Williams, making her case for women's tennis: "Clearly, women's tennis is better than men's tennis. There's no comparison. I mean, I'm on the tour. We have great personalities like Jelena on the tour. I mean, it's way cattier, so it's way more exciting to watch.

"But, you know, I think men's tennis is good to watch because we can learn from them."

Serena just took her cockiness to a whole new level. And now she thinks that women's tennis is better the men's tennis? Lolz. Yeah, personalities, arrogant personality like Serena. =)

Yeah, I love watching 6 service breaks in a row and seeing women choke matches away, making 50 UEs in two sets.

I also love seeing Serena completely tank the first set of so many of her matches only to finally get it together...Even fat, unfit and kinda lazy at times, at her best no one can beat her. There's no one out there who can challenge her when she plays well...Exciting stuff indeed.

Women's tennis sure is fascinating...
 
Of course delusional Serena wants to believe this. Rather than the truth that she is playing in by far the worst time ever for womens tennis and in her current fitness and form wouldnt be getting past the 4th round of any slam in almost any other era. That and the WTA is close to bankruptcy.
 
In her defense, she did not say it was better tennis. Her reasoning was that it was "cattier" (I am sure Billie Jean King cringed over that one). Women's tennis does have that going for it--the rest of the game is the same, everyone hits flat balls from the baseline and the woman who makes the fewer errors wins.

In my view, she simply has the wrong standard and, NO, by any reasonable standard, womens' tennis is simply not even close to that played on the mens' tour.

The golfers got it right--separate tees, no equal prize money and no equivalent of mixed doubles (aka Mens' Singles with a Handicap).
 
The current women arent catty. They are bores. They all bow down and kiss Serena's fat ass, including even her sister. How is that catty. Maybe when you had a healthy Maria, a fitter Serena, Venus, Henin, Clijsters, Mauresmo, Davenport, Hingis, Capriati all creating interesting rivalries a few years back it was catty. Now it just a snoozefest both on and off the court. Also Jankovic isnt catty, she is just annoying, and her sucky game where over half her shots would be graded "poor" reaching #1 last year makes me bowl over in laughter.

Agreed with all. Of course Serena loves it. She is handed match after match on a silver platter by opponents choking or double faults. It is awesome for her.
 
If by cattier she means it sounds like there are cats dying on court in most matches during points yes she is correct.

I watched Dokic in Australia and that was entertaining, and Suarez-Navarro has a nice backhand to watch but other than that any "highlights" or snips of matches I do see bore me to tears.
 
Alright. Bring on the battle of the sexes once again. I find it funny how Serena still thinks she is the best tennis player in the world(not the best woman, but the best player). Did she forget how Henin use to destroy her and even brought her to tears at her press conference?

When an out of shape past her prime Serena is winning so much still by complete default since her opponents are choking and falling apart vs her, combined with the incredibly weakest ever field, why would anyone want to watch. You are kidding yourself to think there wouldnt be alot of empty seats until the quality improves drastically.
 
I dont mind watching womens tennis, but its true, if a mens player on tour was 30+ lbs overweight, regardless of their talents, they would be a non factor in the slams.

what is attractive about a wta match to me is, the players play closer to my level than the atp pros do. sometimes you would hear some forum members say they hit the ball like federer or roddick. me, i just want to hit the ball like the worst wta player that gets air time -- if i could do that, i probably would beat anybody i play with :)

Or a womens player back in any other era of womens tennis for that matter. Serena would never survive in her current shape in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or 90s fields. Not even the early 2000s. Only today is that possible. I am not a Serena basher as I will readily admit her 2002-2003 tennis could compete with any women in the sports history.

That's what it sounded like to me too, although of course there's no way to be sure unless we can see it firsthand.

I'm amazed how people on a forum will jump all over someone's comments without giving the slightest thought to what context the words were uttered in. Who knows, maybe she said that to get a laugh out of the press corps and was saying all that with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Or maybe she WAS deadly serious and is an arrogant b****. But unless we can see a video or get some other evidence, there's no way to tell either way.
 
i am watching the jankovic-cirstea match right on espn2 and the stadium is packed -- mary carillo said it's packed because they are waiting for the monfils match that follows :shock:
 
To add to the misery all the females like to shreik like a crazy animal during play...I couldn't bear it in the Azarenka - Ivanovic match yesterday for more than 3 games! There should be a rule against excessive shouting! :)

I'm with Dave on this one. If she were seriously arguing that women's tennis is better than mens tennis why would she use "cattyness" as a guage?

defensive behind it all, she knows men's tennis has passed women's tennis in recent years with fed and rafa and women's has been falling behind (henin's retirement, sharapova's disappearance, disappointment from other players)....men's tennis got slagged for years and they've been feeling their oats...consider that si cover of fed and rafa last year with the greatest ever title coming after serena and venus had played a final the day before....quite frankly it's become very didfficult to watch serena on court, she always seems so angry and frustrated, little joy..and her press conferences are legendary in their cringe factor quotient....but maybe, just maybe the women are on the uptick again, but they'll get there on the court not by serena's proclamations

I think Serena has a very point!

Women's tennis should seem closer to OUR games than the men's which always look like played by super humans and we can't relate at all. There's the weight factor :) and occasionally they hit like club players and there's always the unpredictability! All the things that can't be said of men's tennis

that makes sense because i know i would not want to watch a match played by players at my level.
 
Now that I think about this, pro men's tennis is really monotonous and one dimensional. The better they are the more of it. Have you been to an action movie where there's only explosive action from wall to wall? It could feel like that w/ men's. Thanks god for the latest major upset because how much more of the SAME match between SAME guys can you take? Say, is Roddick vs Fed appealing to you?
 
Hmmm in the mens game we have Nadal, Federer, Djokovic, Murray, Tsonga, Roddick etc in the womens game we have out of shape part time Williams sisters and aload of eastern european chokers.

WTA stopped being interesting the day Justine Henin retired.

The could nuke the entire WTA from orbit tomorrow and nothing would change int he tennis world. ESPN2 might go out of business though :)
 
Couple days ago, forced to watch her play doubles with Big Bird, when she actually got both feet off the ground about six inches to swat an small overhead-
Then the anouncers gushed on and on about her "athleticism"

I laughed so hard- now I have the piece on disk- Ready to play in a loop to settle any ideas about women's tennis...

But her behavior when the fat tub of goo threatened the cheater- That was even better then the normal cursing and snarling.

I have often wondered why she has not taken up the European soccer habit of spitting on your opponent when they get close?
 
Serena has a future in comedy after she retires from tennis.


Women's tennis is not even close to men's tennis.


What the hell is wrong with her?
