18 JULY 2006

She's not been seen on a tennis court for seven months, but the former number one is clearly back in shape after a well-earned sabbatical. As she frolicked in the surf this week, Serena Williams showed off her famously honed physique and the rippling muscles that give her one of the most powerful serves in the game.
The 24-year-old looked red-hot in a halter-neck bikini as she cooled off in the waves at Malibu beach. Known for her love of fashion as well as tennis, she accessorised with a pair of large ethnic-style earrings. A seven-time Grand Slam winner, she is now keen to get back in the sporting spotlight after a long absence, making her return on Tuesday with a tournament in Cincinnati.

After taking insufficient time to recover from an operation on her left knee in 2003, the star decided she needed some proper rest and rehabilitation, while admitting she also needed it for herself, mentally. "I was going through a lot of stuff in my life, a lot more than everyone would know," she says. "This is something I should have done a few years ago."

Going shopping in Hollywood and waking up late gave the tennis prodigy some time to herself, "It was awesome for once to wake up at noon with no agenda. I was pretty much on Rodeo (Drive) every day." But since March she's been itching to get back to the courts and "worked out every day" with the results of her hard work clearly visible.

Despite slipping to 140 in the world rankings, if the latest pictures are anything to go by her opponents will be more than a little concerned. Her older sister and on-court competitor Venus recently had nothing but high praise for her sibling during an interview at Wimbledon. "I only play women's doubles with Serena," she said. "Once you've played with her you don't want to play with anyone else. She's awesome."

Aight Bubba Sparxx! I think that's what you said-get it right, get it tight!!! But she really is looking better, even in that picture you had.
Booty, booty, booty, booty, rockin' everywhere

I'm no Serena fan, but she looks MUCH better. I hope she does well. She got one person in Myskina who is even crazier than she is so I am actually for Serena in this match. Myskina is the queen of insane ranting and giving up. At least Serena tries most of the time.

Sorry, I guess that's why theres only 1 pic of her practice from Sunday. I guess Kerrie took her out of town Cincinatti for that.
The magazine article you linked to say the beach is in Malibu. And I think it's Malibu, Cali not Malibu, Ohio.

Number one a body like that is defined as fine, nice hips firm stomach that is clearly fine. Number two just b/c your attracted to like sharapova's rail thin 4 year old boy's body doesnt give you the abilty to call serena fat. Different people like different things, personally i think sharapova looks like a joke however I love Anna Kournakova. With all that being said put it to the side b/c what i am about to say is the most important BEUATY DOESNT WIN CHAMPIONCHIPS (ask Anna) TALENT DOES, AND SERENA WILLAMS IS THE BEST FEMALE PLAYER IN THE WORLD, WHETHER SHE IS #1 OR #500. DO YOU REALLY BELIVE MYSKINA LOOKED AT THAT DRAW AND SAID "YES I GET TO PLAY A PERSON WHO WEIGHS MORE THAN ME" HELL NO SHE DIDNT SAY THAT. THERE IS NO ONE IN THE WORLD THAT WANTS TO PLAY SERENA WILLAMS RIGHT NOW, AND PROBABLY TO THE END OF HER CAREER.

Oh and P.S.
Serena tore her ass up 6-2, 6-2

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS, WE ARE GOING TO BE FORUM FRIENDS BECAUSE WE THINK ALIKE. FINALLY, SOMEONE WITH SOME COMMON SENSE.

Serena hits courts. Courts not happy.

Kidding. She a big, fine woman. She can back that thing up.
And I'm glad she's playing well again.

I just hope she plays smarter tennis than before, moves in, uses the angles and the volleys and hopefully moves better too.
Welcome back 'rena!

Juvenile-You know what i'm talking about!

I can't argue that she does not have a chance to return to form, and a shot/ a chance to return to the top 10 or so.
The results of this match speak for themselves, but it is just painful to watch her- she ain't just built like a truck- she is the truck factory; Man is she scary. I mean, she reminds me that Spring Training photo of Barry Bonds, just with a (slightly) better wig- then she talks.

I'm pleased to see Serena's comeback. I believe she *could* be the one to surpase Court or Navratilova for the Female GOAT prize.

But, please! If someone is ranked #500, they are NOT the "best" ... they are 500th. Let's have a little reason in this discussion....

Bolleteri-Happy With Serena

SPOTLIGHT ON TENNIS
Serena returns with a flourishBY MICHELLE KAUFMAN
mkaufman@MiamiHerald.com
It took exactly 10 minutes Tuesday night for Serena Williams to let the tennis world know she's back and out for blood.

''Devastated'' that her ranking plummeted to No. 139 during her six-month injury absence, Williams overwhelmed 11th-ranked Anastasia Myskina with a quick 3-0 lead and had her serve flying at 126 mph in the first 10 minutes of her comeback match in Cincinnati.

''I hope to go out and blow the joint up,'' the former world No. 1 said before the tournament. ``I have no pressure on me. I have nowhere to go but up.''

Those were sweet words to Nick Bollettieri's ears.

Williams trained with tennis guru Bollettieri at his Bradenton academy for two weeks during the French Open. She was eager to whip herself back into shape and prove wrong the pundits who were sure the 24-year-old had ballooned beyond repair and given up tennis to pursue acting, fashion design and parties.

''It was all about getting her confidence back,'' said Bollettieri, who has worked on and off with Williams throughout her career. ``There was no question in my mind that she could do it. It was about getting accustomed to hitting balls again and feeling like she wants to play. You can't force this on anyone. I hear people saying she'll turn 35 and regret this or that. It's her decision whether she wants to play or not, but if she has that desire, she could be the best ever to strike a tennis ball.''

Williams was out of shape when she arrived for her first week of training, Bollettieri said. ''With a layoff that long, things do go astray,'' he said. But by the second week, she was getting back to her old self, smashing the ball against male hitting partners.

''She was really into it by the end,'' he said. ``With the strength she has, and those keen eyes, she can regain her form faster than most. I think it's a great boost for tennis to have her back and a great thing for Serena, too. She's hungry again, so watch out.''

Bollettieri said Williams plans to return to Bradenton in August and train for the U.S. Open. ''All she needs is a little success to build on, and it can be just like old times,'' he said.

But there was a time when Serena aimed for the top spot.
And not only at surpassing Court and Navratilova ....

The lady with all the slams, Steffi Graf.
In my view Serena Williams is luckly to make the top ten. She and her sister are vastly overrated!

true, true, but when you apply the affirmative action points to "level the playing field" the Williams sisters come out on top.

Yes. That's what "GOAT" means.

Are you always this ... mysterious? What are you posting about?

You suggested that Serena wanted to surpass Court and Navratilova in the GOAT race. I think she wanted more - she wanted to be the GOAT.
