Serena is Pregnant!

the other wta players deep down inside are probably saying "thank god she's pregnant so that she'll be off the tour for at least ~1 year if not gone for good!"

Everyone else in WTA right now

Especially Sharapova

Career over. Isn't she like 35 or something? Surely the WTA can't be this bad and let Serena win a slam after the pregency lmao. Not that I watch WTA but I feel sorry for the people that do.

Who knows if Serena will come back, but if she does she will be relatively rested and fighting against low expectations and the norms, which she seems to have a winning record against for her career.

I think the rest of the majors are an absolute WILD CARD. Nobody is a favorite... and ratings are going to hit the fan.

Agree she's better than Court, but there are many who say Serena is goat based solely on number of slams. i.e She has more slams than Graf, she is now goat. Can't have it both ways.
Slams ONLY count when they occur in the Open Era. Serena has the most slams in the Open Era, followed by Graf, Navratilova & Evert, THEN Court. If we were to include pre Open Era results in GOAT conversations, then Roy Emerson and Bill Tilden should be included in the ATP GOAT discussions.

Emerson isn't included in discussions because he won most of his slams when the likes of a Laver and Rosewall were dominating the pro tour.

Serena only has 1 extra slam which I don't think is enough to outrank Graf's golden slam.

1. Court
2. Graf
3. Williams
4. Evert
5. Navratilova

Just saw that Wozniacki liked a teeet congratulating Serena on her pregnancy.

Caroline is arguably Serena's closest friend so I can't see her not knowing the news. Can't see Serena not being pregnant, a statement would've been issued ASAP.

I get the sense that they've cooled the friendship in recent times. What Caro did, I think, was like a tweet from SI, no?

Serena wasn't quick to deny the last round of pregnancy rumors so I'm not gonna believe this one until she confirms in that many words. I think it's odd she's staying mum if she IS pregnant indeed. Along with her entire close circle (dad, sister, Patrick, etc.).

Clearly they only count for you. To suit your opinion. Which is exactly that, an opinion. It's not a fact.
Plus Rod Laver might disagree with you :)

Also, she deleted her snapchat, no? It's just kinda weird, to post, then delete. Not really how people announce normally.

IDK, this smells of a "food baby" joke that Internet took for real pregnancy.

Surely you'd just deny it straight away - sponsors etc.
However, given she tweeted photos of herself desperately ill after her Wimbledon doubles meltdown she's not adverse to media drama...

Why post such an odd photo if not pregnant? She's saying she's fat?

But it's not what she did the last time. Instead, she stayed mum for a little bit, then said something. (Though that was more understandable since rumor got randomly started by god-knows-who and I can see how she'd be thinking to herself "hahahaha, I'm not confirming nor denying, let them guess." She doesn't have an obligation to correct every kooky rumor.)

But since this rumor is sth she personally sparked, yeah you'd think she'd clarify quickly.

IDK. I think deleting the pic is an odd move if she's indeed pregnant and wanting to tell the world. And I don't get why her entire circle is mum. Where's Alex, Venus, Patrick?

Not gonna believe it until they formally confirm personally.

I've joked about having a food baby after eating a large meal a million times. I mean, not via pic on social media, but you know, I could see people doing it.

I'm not saying it's not true. I can't know that. I'm just skeptical at this point.

If she's not pregnant she's going to look rather ridiculous - and out of shape.
Personally, I think she is pregnant but enjoying playing the media.

I've thought she was pregnant about 10 times in the past and based on her photo alone I still can't tell the difference.

The problem is that the Open Era didn't have the same impact on the slam rosters in the women's game that it did in the men's game. Before 1968, men's tennis was typically divided between a small, "cream of the crop" group of pros and a larger group of purported amateurs, some of whom were fine players but just not as good as the best pros. The top players graduated from the amateur circuit to the pro circuit as their financial needs became paramount. Women's tennis simply did not suffer from this divide. Women's professional tennis before 1968 was largely limited to exhibitions, and was never a serious rival to the amateur circuit that included the slams. How many Wimbledons or U.S. championships did Billie Jean King have to miss in the 1960s because she was subjected to the ban that guys like Laver and Rosewall experienced? Answer: Zero.

Well, she's playing the media for sure by staying silent.

I wouldn't say she's out of shape based on that pic. I've had my worst "food babies" while running 60-70 miles per week. They tend to stick out more when the person's otherwise fit. And they go down quickly, in an hour or two.

As to ridiculous, well......That's already the case, no? :) Because announcing, then deleting, if it's true is, well, ridiculous. :) In a situation like that, you say something quickly one way or another b/c it all came from you to start with. Very different from a situation where a kook randomly "announces" on your behalf (I wouldn't be in a rush to correct rumors from random internet people either if I were a celebrity).

No opinion on my end at this point; I'm just reserving the congrats until she or the dad (or maybe Venus or someone like that) says something.

She's a professional athlete (some of the time) why would she post a photo with her looking fat unless pregnant? And given that she's had photoshopped pics in the past, it makes less sense.
I'll guess we'll know soon enough.

Maybe she had the same thought and deleted quickly for that reason. :-)

Yeah we'll know soon enough. Staying on the entry list for Madrid will speak volumes. Isn't Madrid in like two weeks? It's absurd to keep being on it if you're nearly into the third trimester.

So that is the new doping frontier:) Get pregnant for the slams? Altho it is too easy to detect woth urine test

Hopefully, no one will "use" it as a new doping method. I only said that because some people see pregnancy almost like an illness - far from it.

Looks possible that she won't win any majors, meaning she would remain behind Court for female GOAT, and remains tied with Graf (Graf's golden slam outranking the extra singles slam).

Court is the GOAT with 24 majors + CYGS.
Graf is co-GOAT with 22 open era majors + golden slam.
Serena has 23 but the golden slam achievement puts Graf above her. Just as it puts Laver above the likes of Emerson.
Have you seen the size of the draws and quality of the fields at the Australian Opens that Court won?

Also, Serena didn't win the golden slam but she held all four on two separate occasions. Can't just ignore that.

Wouldn't she be due the week of September 10th? I mean, that's kinda fall? I think of September as a fall month personally.

Autumn falls..get it?..starts on September 22. Still quite hot here in September. Usually think of October as the beginning of fall. So would have been more accurate to say due in late summer.

I know it's still hot in September but I've definitely always been in the habit of considering it a fall month.

Fall: September, October, November
Winter: December, January, February
Spring: March, April, May
Summer: June, July, August

So it makes sense to me.

As a fan, I wish she'd waited until next year (I thought this was her last year on the tour anyway). Take one more slam this year, call it a career, go have babies.

I personally don't think she can come back from it. AO 2017 would probably be too early, and by FO 2017....well, the world might change by then. She's just too old for this kind of absence.

Yeah, I thought Serena would wait till next year as well to start a family. Thought she'd try to make another run at the CYGS, pass Court on the way, then rstire.

Congratulations to Serena and Alex. This is wonderful news. And amazing that she won AO17 while nine weeks pregnant. That's a time when a lot of women are feeling really sick and you've got to be careful not to get too hot, etc. Apparently she is planning to return in 2018, so I think she's still got her eye on Court's record.

This might explain the Auckland result as well.

This is one of the biggest tennis stories in 2017 that is already full of amazing results and surprising stories!

What else is in store for us in one of the all-time great years????

The WTA is threatening to be really interesting from the clay season onwards this year. Sharapova will be returning for clay, we will hopefully have Muguruza and Kvitova back at their best for Wimbledon, and then once summer hardcourt season begins we will have the emergence of Azarenka back on the scene!

Don't worry about Serena, she will be back after pregnancy. She will get advice from Clijsters, then come back and win USO and AO consecutively.

Congratulations to Serena, now it's clear for me the reason why she was withdrawing from the tournaments.
Didn't Court win the Aussie while pregnant one year?
Didn't Margaret Court win a slam while pregnant?
No, she lost to Evonne Goolagong 46 16 in Wimbledon 1971 final.
Also, Serena didn't win the golden slam but she held all four on two separate occasions. Can't just ignore that.
Serena did win the CAREER Golden Slam, not the CY Golden Slam like Steffi. Also Graf held all four twice, 1988 and 1993-94.

Yup, same. I didn't think she'd make CYGS, but I figured she might pick up one more slam, either at W or USO, and call it a career.

I'm guessing she'll want to be back to prove herself one more time, and ordinarily I wouldn't doubt her ability to do so, were she in her late 20s or sth.....but at 36, I'm really not persuaded.

Whether Serena comes back probably depends on how many children she wants...

I would guess she'd want to come back for a year/year and a half, see what she can do, then exit for good. I mean, plenty of famous women have kids at 40/in early 40s these days, it's not like IVF isn't an easily available option for them.
