Serena is Pregnant!

Looks possible that she won't win any majors, meaning she would remain behind Court for female GOAT, and remains tied with Graf (Graf's golden slam outranking the extra singles slam).

Court is the GOAT with 24 majors + CYGS.
Graf is co-GOAT with 22 open era majors + golden slam.
Serena has 23 but the golden slam achievement puts Graf above her. Just as it puts Laver above the likes of Emerson.
No.

Serena and Graf are in a league of their own.

The Aus Open was different in Court's day. Take a look.

Margaret court played just FOUR matches to win the following:
Aus Open: 1964, 1966**, 1971.

She played FIVE matches to win the following slams:
Aus Open: 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1969, 1970, 1973.

Sorry, but that's barely worthy of calling it a slam. Winning just 4 matches to win a slam, often the Australian Open was skipped by many big named players. It's not the same as it is now.

It should have been a celebratory thread for a great woman's impending motherhood.

Even an unborn baby, however, people use it to attack the WTA and Serena in a snide, roundabout way, while pretending to offer congratulations and, going by post "likes", very gratified that Serena - who was winning far too many slams again - will not be playing.

Should be a thread on the nxt WTA player to win a tourney..........................................................................................................while pregnant. Or even become pregnant.........................................................................or even win a tournament?

Edit.
So Venus gets to a major final.. a major she's never won... at 37 and Serena's pregnant, knows she isn't going to go for a calendar slam? She could have made unforced errors galore and given her sister something she hasn't had in so long. A major title. A major she's never won.

That's just wrong.

And I understand people aren't going to like me saying that.. but if that was my younger sibling and here I am at the end and I've never won the Aussie Open.. and you're probably never going to play again. THROW ME A FRICKIN BONE. . Geeesh.

Oh, I'd be mad. But that's just me. Venus probably isn't like me.

Martina was winning doubles majors until she was almost 50. I don't see this as the end of Serena winning majors. Serena and Venus are probably going to play slam doubles for another 10 years?

Photo shared on social media shows her at 20 weeks with Reddit co-founder Alex Ohanian’s child (presumably - unless 20 weeks means something else here which I doubt).

All tabloid links for references though, but still. Very happy for her if true!

Uh-oh, I sure hope it's not Roger's, Becker's, or Stepanek's.

But you never know -- there's always a chance it's sureshs!

Nadal's girlfriend is pregnant would deserve ... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So Court records will stand forever. She may be the GOAT or not, but her records will be there and any GOAT discussion will be tamed because of this.
If martina can reach a wimbledon final at 37 going on 38 serena can comeback at 36.
Her spokesperson have confirmed she's returning next year.
Plus she'll still be ranked with at least 2000k points when she returns having won AO and she's nearly halfway through the pregnancy

It's not just age. Her body will never be the same once she produces a child.

I would guess she'd want to come back for a year/year and a half, see what she can do, then exit for good. I mean, plenty of famous women have kids at 40/in early 40s these days, it's not like IVF isn't an easily available option for them.

Agree. Someone as competitive as Serena will definitely want another shot at winning after her first pregancy.

Nadal and Xisca may change their mind. But their public statement at this stage is that they would like to start a family when Nadal has retired from pro tennis. Early baby news would be a surprise for sure and send the Domestic Spanish media into a complete meltdown.

Ditto!

Once she has a child, at 36, it will be a challenge to get back in shape. Between being a mother, commitments, and everyday life. The last thing on her mind is competitive tennis.

Bringing up a child is a full time job. The last thing she'd want is for people to question her fitness is a mother.

Never again will we seen Serena Williams on a tennis court. Never again.

Personally I'm glad she's not playing: I'd be a hypocrite if I said otherwise.
I actually think her not playing is a good thing for women's tennis. She's basically too good and this coupled with a part time schedule basically makes the others look pretty average.
It will also, for the time being, end the speculation that dominates womens majors "will she equal Court's record? Will she beat Court's record".
I think it's fair for people to constructively question the depth of the WTA. Personally, I don't think depth is the problem, it's the lack of consistency.
Maybe with Williams out of the game a legitimate successor can step up?
And her sister gets the solo spotlight.
All good.

I would add I do feel empathy for her sane fans who will miss her. But you can take solace that she's not playing for the best of reasons.
Plus, she has eased you gently in to her not being around ;)

I just don't understand why she got pregnant at the time when she is so close to break Court records and rewrite history? Why couldn't she and her boyfriend wait for one more year? Is this that hard?

Maybe getting pregnant helped her close the gap to the record?

My congrats to Serena and her fiancee!
Hopefully we'll see her back on the courts next year, but if not... fantastic career and happy family life thereafter. Not too shabby. :)

Perhaps she's all too aware that at the age of 35+, it gets a lot harder to get pregnant at all?
Perhaps there are other things she values in life, like... having kids?

I don't question her at all if that's what she wants.

But if the pregnancy was a miscalculation I would feel pretty bad even I am not her fan. And I know very well that many women got pregnant beyond their will.

She may well have been trying to get pregnant ever since she felt her relationship would turn out to be a serious one.

Just a thought.

Serena and Vika will have lots to talk about now. Next, Carol will start feeling left out of all the girl talk and she will also ..... :)
Can't think why? Wozniacki is considerably younger than Williams (a decade?)plus she's playing her best tennis for years. Also, is she actually in a long term relationship?
Time is on her side.

But it was played on FAST grass -- as opposed to the slower grass courts of today. And she played against players who actually knew how to volley.
She gave birth in 1972. And won 3/4 slams in 1973 (Oz, France, US). Yes, Williams and Graf are in a league of their own. And Court's in a league of her own. Right above them.

Four matches. Four matches to win 3 slams. Who gives a crap if the court was faster. Not even comparable. And please, half of her slams at the Aus Open are against nobodies where in the early rounds she won 6-0 6-1.

Because it proves that, besides the internet warriors, in the real life people have other things to think about and focus. In real life, things don't turn around records, numbers, accomplishment... Williams is 36 now and contrarily to a lot of young adults, she has yet to establish a true stable life for herself yet and her focus has been shifting to that for a couple of years now. Good for her!

"Four matches to win 3 slams" comes to TWELVE matches by my math. And she played "nobodies", unlike Williams, right? Yes, she and Chris Evert won more love & love, and one & love matches than any other players I know of. Because they were GREAT. Don't remember them ever needing a "double expresto" during a match, either. Imagine...?!

Double espresso? That was from a freaking exhibition tournament - the Hopman Cup.

Twelve matches to win three slams. Serena played TWENTY ONE to win 3.

Lol. Such a failed logic. First of all we are TENNIS fans and this is a tennis forum, just to mind you in case you don't know where you are. And we discuss Serena's pregnancy first and foremost because she is a great player and is so close to do something never happens in history. If she is just another woman who cares she is pregnant or not?

You are such a internet moral warrior. The point you raised has no validity at all.

I'm so happy... for her. If she has a girl, wouldn't it be great if she named her "Margaret"...?! That would be a lovely, classy gesture.
