While Sugarpova may have cause to celebrate, she now 30 years old. Not a Evert 30; or Graf 30, or a Li Na 30, not even a Venus 30. She's more like a Tracy Austin 30.

And with those "dance" moves, it's apparent she didn't use the time off to improve her footwork.

Good luck Maria.

So you said that Williams has won the Career Doubles Slam twice. I suggest you check the easily available records yourself. And then apologise.

"she's won a career golden slam TWICE in both singles AND doubles, the only player to ever achieve that if I'm not mistaken). "

You are mistaken.

Grand Slam Doubles results
Australian Open
W (2001, 2003, 2009, 2010)
French Open W (1999, 2010)
Wimbledon W (2000, 2002, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2016)
US Open W (1999, 2009)
@captainbryce apologies, you are right on this point. I am wrong. I got my slam terminology confused.

Yes she has two career slams in both singles and doubles.

Sorry.

Edit: Navratilova has 7 career slam doubles.
Shriver has 4.

Meldonium has no effect on performance whatsoever, so the post-ban Maria will be the same as the unjustly banned one.

WADA's only stated reason for banning it was that people were taking the two dollar legal 'medicine' thinking it was such.

She will be, but not for the reasons you mention.

She will be because she never had those "conditions" that she claimed she had as an excuse to take all those pills.

Go figure.

True -- but the same argument can be made for Graf, Evert, and Court as well. When it comes to doubles, Martina is the GOAT. But usually in these discussions people are talking about the singles GOAT, and doubles only comes into play when trying to separate similarly rated singles players.

Most hardcourt grand slam singles titles

By winning the 2001 Australian Open doubles championship with Venus Williams, became the fifth pair to complete a Career Doubles Grand Slam and the only pair to win a Career Doubles Golden Slam.

By winning the 2005 Australian Open by defeating Mauresmo and Davenport, became the only player in tennis history to win three Grand Slam singles titles (1999 U.S. Open, 2002 Roland Garros) by beating the top two ranked players.

Only player to have won three Grand Slam singles titles after saving match points (2003 Australian Open versus Kim Clijsters, 2005 Australian Open versus Maria Sharapova, and 2009 Wimbledon versus Elena Dementieva).

Lowest ranked player (No. 18) to defeat the Top-2 players in the world in the same tournament

She became the only person in history, male or female, to win three of the four grand slams 6 times

Only player, male or female, to complete the Career Golden Slam after turning 30 years of age

Only player, male or female, to win 10+ grand slam singles titles in two separate decades (10 in the 2000s and 12 in the 2010s)

By reaching the final of the 2003 Australian Open, she and sister Venus became the first players to compete in 4 consecutive slam finals

The only pair to win a Career Doubles Golden Slam and first pair in the Open Era to complete the Career Doubles Golden Slam twice

Set a record for most aces served in a tournament, hitting 102 aces in the tournament, which was the most of men or women at the Championships that year

Longest span between first (2003) and last (2017) Australian Open titles

Longest span between first (2002) and last (2015) Roland Garros titles

Longest span between first (2002) and last (2016) Wimbledon titles

Longest span between first (1999) and last (2014) US Open titles

Longest-ever gap between stints at No. 1 (five years, one month)

First woman to win 60+ career matches in all four Grand Slams in the Open Era

Oldest player to hold all Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously

316 grand slam singles match wins is more than any player, male or female, in tennis history

First, and only, woman to win US$80,000,000 in career prize money

Highest earning female athlete of all-time in terms of prize money across all sports

Most decorated tennis player in the Olympics with a record of 4 gold medals shared with sister, Venus.

Oldest player to hold No. 1 ranking

1st player to have more than twice as many points as anyone else on the WTA Rankings

Oldest player to win a grand slam singles title

First player in tennis history to win the Season-Ending Championships on her debut

First woman in history to win singles titles at (1) a Grand Slam event, (2) a Premier Mandatory event, (3) the Olympics [gold medal], and (4) the WTA Championships in the same season

Only player, male or female, to ever accomplish a Career Golden Slam in singles and doubles

Destroying revisionist haters is so fun! :D

You made a great list, but when people speak of the best, they bring the big stuff. These are random

In fed threads these are gravey, your post is the meal.

Factor in her tue's (got one two weeks after failing a test in a FO final), she is a joke and shouldnt be mentioned with the others who actually looked like a woman

It's news, but not really interesting news, Aside from the simple fact she is pregnant, everything is either reminiscence or speculation.

You could argue it's a de facto retirement given her age, but that's yet to be seen.

I guess it tends to be when the woman in question is the most successful active woman player and possibly of all time!

First of all we are TENNIS fans and this is a tennis forum

Thus irrational and thinking that our peculiar concerns are the ones of the tennis players, which as proven once again is not.

If she is just another woman who cares she is pregnant or not?

Well, I hope you don't have a wife and/or girlfriend or a close friend/relative who is pregnant. I'm sure they would be absolutely thrilled to see such lack of concern and appreciation.

Other members of WTA Top 10 should send her flowers. Not just to congratulate on being a future mother but also as a "thank you" that they will be able to actually win something finally when she's on her maternal leave.

The statement was that outside of the AO Serena holds no records. I just demonstrated that statement to be false and utterly destroyed your argument. If you need to move the goalposts now to save face, by all means do so.

I wasn't wrong about anything. Serena has not won the golden slam that Graf did in 1988, fact.
Qualifiers qualifiers! Nobody made that argument knucklehead. There are different types of "golden slams" just as they're are different types of "grand slams". The words have multiple meanings which is why qualifiers are important. Colloquially (and commonly) a "grand slam" is winning any ONE of the majors. Winning all four of them is a "career grand slam", winning all four of them in a 12 month span is a "non-calendar year grand slam", winning all four of them in the same calendar year is a "calendar grand slam", winning all four of them plus the Olympic gold is a "career golden slam", and winning all four of them plus the Olympic gold in the Olympic calendar year is the "calendar year golden slam". The question is whether or not Serena Williams won a golden slam; the answer is yes, she has. Nobody claimed that she won the same slam (or same slam type) as Graf in 1988, mostly because that's an irrelevant stat. When you when a slam doesn't factor into "greatness", it's WHETHER you win one at all and how many you ultimately win that determines ranking. And we tend not to compare the Open Era to the pre-Open Era because that's like comparing two different sports, with different rules and different expectations.

Serena Williams completes Golden Slam with demolition of Maria Sharapova

WIMBLEDON, England — No venue showcases Serena Williams’s dominance of women’s tennis like the All England club. And no opponent elicits her best like Maria Sharapova, who was just 17 when she dethroned Williams in the 2004 Wimbledon final.

Williams has been paying back the Russian since. And she did so again Saturday to claim the lone coveted prize to elude the 30-year-old champion: Olympic singles gold.

It was an unapologetic evisceration, with Williams needing just 63 minutes for the 6-0, 6-1 victory.

And she leaped up and down on Centre Court, where she won the fifth of her Wimbledon championships four weeks earlier, then erupted into a celebratory dance as her sister Venus snapped photos from a courtside box.

With the victory, Williams became only the second woman and fourth tennis player in history to accomplish what’s known as the “Golden Slam,” winning all four of the sport’s majors and Olympic singles gold. Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf and Rafael Nadal did so, as well.

I only glaced at the list because it was so stupid, but i did notice some things were wrong. You forgot the mention she is the only player (male or female) to have her nails painted different colors. The only player in history to drink exactly 78oz of water and 23 oz of gatorade. Stick with real records like most weeks at number 1, most titles won and other meaningful accomplishments

Longest span between first (2003) and last (2017) Australian Open titles

Longest span between first (2002) and last (2015) Roland Garros titles

Meanwhile, Ilie Nastase is in trouble for making a derogatory comment about Serena's unborn baby:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/39674903

Silly Ilie!!

If he really said that, it puts him on the level of some of the worst tt/tf posters.

Those words he used were nearly exactly the same words that a certain group of people in Germany used when Barbara was pregnant with Becker's son, although Boris and Barbara endured far worse.

Nastase has a history of making racist statements. He referred to Ashe with the n-word years back.

CAPS MEAN HEADLINES, FOR ME, NOT SHOUTING

And Sharapova's return is something of a sports headline.

1. Court
2. Graf
3. Serena (until she reaches 24 slams with CYGS, or wins CYGS to become 2nd co-GOAT with Graf)
People ranking court above serena and graf are quite frankly foolish.
Court was never even considered GOAT by most people before serena even got close to 24. Once serena got close to 22 the establishment starts sweating buckets and started to use court as the benchmark when Graf was always considered the GOAT.

So whats changed people? Hmmm
Court has never been considered number 1 over graf let alone above navratilova or Evert.

THANK YOU!!!

When Graf retired nobody talked about Court before cause of the difference in competition in the eras.

Only when Serena came within reach of Graf did ...some people...reach into the way back machine to grasp at the last straw remaining which was Court

I think we all know why as well.

Lmaooooo... Court, the last refuge of a scoundrel

And again...Serena has twice held all 4 slams at the same time but not all in the same calendar year

Serena also has triple career slam, having won each major at least 3 times

Lol this clown is still trying to prop up Margaret Court? I guess credibility isn't very high on his list of priorities in this life

I'm not sure how you can argue with the facts...

24 slams > 23
1 CYGS > 0 CYGS

If you try to argue Court won in a weak era, then the weak era lowers Serena beneath Graf (as well as less dominance, no Calendar golden slam).

Then wunderkid Hingis, the first to break thru of The Golden Era/Generation came along and won three slams in 1997 breaking Graf's second reign of dominance

And the same Hingis that interrupted her second uninterrupted reign of dominance got run out of tennis by Serena and the rest of that generation

Now you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. Clearly you can't remember how weak it was once seles was stabbed.
The only reason graf reached 22 majors and has 377 weeks at number 1 was because her only competition was taken out of the game.

Can't be any weaker than 2010 onward then or most of Serena's recent wins as a grandma.

Court remains the GOAT with both the slam record, and the CYGS. And she also had a baby which likely cost her 3-4 slams. At the time she just won 8/9 slams then lost early in the next two, came back to win 3 more in one year.

Yeah ok

Meanwhile since 2010

Sharapova won 2 FO
Serena hasnt lost to Sharaova since 2004

Kvitova won 2 Wimbledons

Has Serena ever lost to Petra?

Azarenka won what..2 slams?

Whats her record against Serena?

Li Na won 2 slams

Kerber, Stosur(who underachieved most of her career), Panetta, Bartoli, Schiavone and Mugaruza have a slam each

Kuzzy vultured a second slam

Yet Serena has reigned off and on as world number one and won multiple slams plus olympic gold in singles and doubles

What were graf's pigeons doing during her 2nd reign of dominance before Hingis showed up to stop Graf?

Great news for one of three tennis legends on tour. She's living a great life and will share that with her child.

Everyone else in WTA right now

TtNEvVmvZedu8.gif

..only losers who failed to do their job. Meanwhile, I expect Kerber to continue to live up her obvious talent.

Won the Australian Open against her sister, and passed Graf. What a great way to go out.

"Out?" No one said she's retiring. In fact, I expect her to return and show her usual superiority over most of the field.

In related news, a familiar, vile fool has attacked Serena:

Romanian Fed Cup captain under fire for questionable Serena Williams comments

The International Tennis Federation is considering disciplinary action against Romania’s Fed Cup captain after he reportedly made a racist comment about Serena Williams during a Friday news conference.

Ilie Nastase, a former men’s world No. 1, reportedly said the following about Williams, who is pregnant with her first child: “Let’s see what color it has. Chocolate with milk?”

In December, Williams announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, who is white.

“The ITF does not tolerate discriminatory and offensive language and behavior of any kind,” the ITF said in a statement. “We are aware of alleged comments made by Romanian captain Ilie Nastase and have begun an immediate investigation so that we have the full facts of the situation before taking further and appropriate action"

That was not some "cute" comment. He's lived long enough to know the full implication of his words. Disgusting, but unfortunately, he's not alone in making sickening comments of that kind.

Someone can easily do the same for most of Federer's majors.

Serena battled three generations of majors winners and won against all. Only the achievement of a superior talent.

BS.
Federer is facing against the two toughest rivals(Nadal & Nole) in history. No tier 1 great player has ever have to deal with 2 greater players. Navratilova had only one tier 1 great(Chris Evert), Borg had few great rivals but none are a tier 1 great. Sampras had Agassi but he's a tier 2 great, Serena doesn't have any tier 1 great rival.
