#Serena Pulls Out of #SwedishOpen: Elbow Injury

BASTAD, Sweden -- Wimbledon champion Serena Williams has pulled out of the Swedish Open, citing a right elbow injury.

Tournament spokesman Marcus Duner said the top-ranked Williams was injured while practicing Thursday. He had no immediate details on the injury.

Williams withdrew ahead of her second-round match against Klara Koukalova, who advanced to the quarterfinals by walkover.

Williams sailed through her opening match on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Belgian qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure, four days after winning her sixth Wimbledon title and fourth Grand Slam event in a row.

Duner says organizers are "obviously sad when the world's No. 1 can't continue to play," but that there are still good players left in the draw.

Not a real injury. Anybody with a brain knew she would either pull out or lose on purpose early. Silly that she was even in the draw.

Ok I decided to put in a little effort. Since Wimbledon last year: pulled out of Bastad with viral illness. Won Stanford. Lost semi of Montreal. Won Cincy. Won USO. Withdrew prior to QF match Beijing with knee injury. Wuhan, withdrew with viral iIlness while up a break during her second round match. Won YEC. Played no WTA events prior to AO (but lost Hopman Cup). Won AO. Withdrew from IW semi with knee injury. Presumably skipped Dubai because of same injury. Won Miami. Some fedcup in there somewhere. Lost semi of Madrid. Withdrew before R2 of Rome with elbow injury. Won FO . Won Wimbledon. Withdrew Bastad before R2 with elbow injury. And here we are. Viral illnesses, knee probs, elbow probs. Surprised no back probs.

Edit: added her withdrawal from Bastad, viral illness. Ironically, I forgot that one.

Serena has played there and won before.
Could it not be that she just likes the place. It's really chilled and a different vibe / pace of life in summer.
She seemed to like playing there in previous years.

"Elbow injury?" It's called take the large appearance fee and run. Not that there is anything wrong with it. Most players do it but let's not pretend she had a real injury.
