#Weeks at Number One (Open Era-only):

1. Steffi Graf 377
2. Martina Navratilova 332
3. #Serena Williams 262*
4. Chris Evert 260

*#Serena is on target to surpass Navratilova in or around February 2017 and Graf in or around December 2017.

#Consecutive Weeks at Number One (Open Era-only):

1. Steffi Graf186
2. Martina Navratilova 156
3. #Serena Williams 139*
4. Chris Evert 113

*#Serena is on target to surpass Navratilova in or around March 2016 and Graf in or around September 2016.

Note:

1. Weeks at Number One is an Open Era-only statistic and doesn't factor other players historical dominance prior to 1968.

2. While Weeks at Number One continues to be considered a #minor in regards to tennis history because it only a screenshot of 40 years of tennis, it is a statistic which can factor a players historical dominance during the Open Era-only.

3. The ITF-sanctioned events continues to be the primary factor for induction for a former player into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, hence Weeks at Number One is a #minor.

4. It is an inevitability that #Serena surpass Navratilova and Graf in Weeks at Number One.

5. #Serena, at 21 Grand Slam singles wins, is also on-track to surpass Graf and Court in total wins All-Time in 2016 and 2017, respectively. #Serena continues to dominate women's tennis, even while on vacation.

6. #Serena is the Greatest of All-Time. Everyone knows it. #GirlBye

7. I am almost finished with my quilting and will be spending more time in the forum and Angie's Kitchen. #Dust

You don't like #Evert, do you?

Also, what about Graf?
She's still greater IMO, and no, I don't hate Serena.

Is the weeks at number 1 'Open Era'? I thought computer rankings came in much later than 1968?
Good on Serena. Shame on her current challengers........as they clearly offer little challenge to her supremacy which feels like it's being going on since 1968.
Ps.... pls make another quilt.... ;)

If Halep wins AO, things can change very quick for Serena and her number 1 status
Not really. She'll have to win YEC and AO and a few more other tournaments and for serena to have major floppage to stand any chance. Not to mention halep hasn't even won a major yet and she's already 24

Good for Serena. Since USO2011, she was beaten only two times in final of any tournament and both times by Azarenka.

Competition at the top is so so so poor she can go on for another year or two.

Serena has no threat in sight, Vika maybe push her but she is not even top twenty. I cant understand Halep, she can play well but at times goes out in early rounds. Maria has serious mental issue with Serena. Only way to stop her will be a Vinci like performance.

According to Steve Flink, the WTA computer rankings weren't official until November 1975. Many experts have Chris ranked #1 from July 6 after Wimbledon 1974 through the first half ‘75 until July (when BJK would have regained it) through September. Then 8 more weeks following her 1975 US Open victory, all before official rankings were counted. With that additional 60 weeks, this puts her at 322 weeks at #1, only 9 short of the great Navratilova.

No active player besides Serena has at least 100 weeks at #1, so it makes it easier to hold the #1 because there's no threat. I'm still astound that Chris was able to reach 322 weeks when her main rival Martina had even more! It's like Nadal(currently has 141) having 300 weeks alongside with Federer.

You're assuming that Serena hangs on to play that long, and that her game doesn't decline/collapse before then. I believe it is certainly reasonable to assume that she'll surpass Navratilova in terms of consecutive weeks at number one and possibly total weeks. But (assuming she continues playing through 2017) surpassing Graf is still a tall order.

If Halep wins AO, things can change very quick for Serena and her number 1 status
With all due respect to Halep, that's a big IF. She has yet to show that she is capable of playing well for 7 consecutive matches. Her loss at the US Open was an epic beat down that came out of nowhere.

Not really. She'll have to win YEC and AO and a few more other tournaments and for serena to have major floppage to stand any chance. Not to mention halep hasn't even won a major yet and she's already 24

I tend to agree with this assessment. Although I would add that in addition to the Vinci like performance, it's also going to take several "chokes" by Serena. But if we are all being honest with ourselves, that's exactly what happened to her at the US Open. Despite all of her attempts to downplay the "pressure" of the GS hanging in the balance, she ultimately choked under the pressure! After playing so well to take out far superior players, to lose to Vinci in the semifinals can't be explained away by any Vinci's stellar play alone.

ROTFL she doesnt have 322 weeks at #1, she has 260. That is a fact. She probably would have over 300 had the computer system been in place a bit sooner but it wasnt.

That is unless you are going to credit Gonzales, Laver, Tilden with the over 400 weeks at #1 they would have had, and we all know you wont do that in a way to protect a certain someone on those fantasy lists you post repeatedly. If you are willing to do that then you are entitled to post your ficticious made up number for Evert as well.

That's fair enough, but then we also have to acknowledge that weeks at number one as stated by the OP did NOT begin with the Open Era. And therefore you can't really compare with players, such as Evert, who straddled both before and after computer rankings. Likewise with slam victories ....... different eras, different priorities.

Looks like it's time for Serena to fail to achieve this record after bypassing the tournaments at the end of 2015 and hence losing all points she could get.
Total weeks at #1 seems out of reach for the moment too.
Well done. On the way down to total failure with no serious rival around.

We are talking about the open era and unlike Chris, Gonzales/Laver/Tilden were from the pre-open era when there's a split fields(amateur and pro). Chris competes against the full field while the formers didn't, that's a big difference. Federer, Sampras, Connors and Lendl have impressive number of weeks at #1 because they all did it since the ATP establishment, just like Martina, Chris, Graf and Serena have did it under WTA. They are all equally comparable. Laver/Rosewall/Pancho are only comparable to the pre-open era.

That's fair enough, but then we also have to acknowledge that weeks at number one as stated by the OP did NOT begin with the Open Era. Chris is from the 70s/80s so yeah, all of her career achievements are in the open era. The biggest difference is Chris played under the WTA system with full completion whereas men tennis in the 60s and before had amateur and pro tour, and the ATP wasn't formed until 1972.

That would all be well and good, however, #Serena's 21 Grand Slam singles titles vs #Evert's 18 settled that debate last year. There were (4) ITF-sanctioned grand slam events available for #Evert to play throughout her career. She had equal opportunity as #Serena did, but just wasn't the caliber of champion that #Serena is. Just face it, #PDJ, the longer #Serena plays, the further down the list #Chris goes.

Truth be told, #Chris might have won more had it not been for her marriage to #JohnLloyd. That's when her game began declining. #GirlBye

#Serena isn't defending enough points for the rest of the year to knock her out of the #1 ranking. #Simona and #Sharapova are shells of their former selves at the moment. Learn the ranking system. The math isn't that difficult, really.

Agreed.

There will be people will try to apply invisible Weeks at Number One to #Evert to fit their personal agenda, yet not apply the same standard to all champions pre-Open Era. #MrWiki is flip-flopping again.

The same ranking system that you have openly gushed about for a couple of years in this forum because you thought #Serena would never challenge the top? You can't have it both ways. Applying your standard, Helen Wills Moody would have had well over 400 weeks at number one.

I absolutely agree. The thing that annoys me about two faced TMF however is he will give Evert 60 arbitrary weeks at #1 (purely based on a guess, not fact, not all felt Evert was even #1 at the end of 74, Collins ranked her 3rd behind Goolagong and King for instance), but ignore Gonzales, Tilden, and Laver were ALL in reality #1 a lot longer than Federer (and for that matter people like Lenglen and Wills spent a ton of time at #1, never acknowledged by this particular biased individual) and simply trumpet weeks at #1 lists, while acting as if those guys had 0. Evert atleast was officialy credited the vast majority of her career and time at #1. His differing double standards in favor of his crush and love object Federer and those he despises (eg- Serena, Nadal) are all too transparent.

#Chris is "okay" in a "let's lob until someone drops" kinda of way. I fell asleep at Flushing Meadows during one of her matches against Tracy Austin. Chris directly benefited from the change of surface at the US Open from grass, to clay, then hardcourt. Had the US Open remained grass, she likely would only hold 15 Grand Slam titles.

the weeks at number 1 isn't an Open era statistic from 1968. It is from November 1975. Evert was regarded as number 1 probably for the last 1/2 of 1974 and most of 1975. Her real statistics is around what Navratilova is on.

Go back and look at the #ITF-sanctioned grand slam draws when Chris played in the early to mid-70's. Not all were 128-player draws.

And Tee hee. You may be on to something: Maybe her marriage was a distraction for Evert.
Not something Serena need worry about..... well, her own at least.

There never really was a amateur/pro divide in Women's tennis apart from a brief period of Lenglen being pro in the 1920's. There was no pool of Women pro's who were superior to the Amateur women. Hence, amateur slam wins for women stand just as well as open era slam wins.

Can you calculate how many weeks Evert would have been number 1 if the weekly rankings had started earlier than November 1975? I calculate that you should add on roughly 17 months worth from late 74 and all of 75.

While you are right that TMF often is much biased against Serena, which i consider to be the best but far from being the greatest at this moment at least, he is right though that Evert compited in a full field and Laver and Gonzalez did not. BTW, "a lot longer" seems out of place. Federer has 302 weeks, roughly the equivalent of six full years at the top. Tilden played in a joke of an era when he was at the top in the 20s, hardly comparable. Laver was number from mid 64, being generous here, to late 70 early 71, being genereous again, not much more than Federer if at all. Gonzalez may be the exception being the best from 52 to 61, but with several players (Kramer, Segura, Sedgman, Hoad, Rosewall) perhaps taking the number 1 spot from him at different times, according to today standards. So none of them probably reaches the 350 weeks mark.

Why do you call it the Open era WTA ranking system? It isn't. It it the WTA ranking system in use from November 1975. The Open era started in April 1968. Hence, it is entirely legitimate to try to determine how many weeks Evert would have been number 1 if the weekly ranking system was in place earlier.

So who was number 1 from mid-1974 to the Beginning of November 1975? Nobody? If it was somebody or somebodies - then who? If Evert was at least some of the time number 1 - then it seems natural to add that time on.

Are people forgetting that the WTA ranking system changed in the late 90's /early 00's before serena even reached number 1. People have already calculated serena's total weeks at number 1 if the old divisor system was still in place. She would have already been over the 300 mark already. And players like woz and jankovic and safina would never have been no 1

This thread is about Serena supposedly passing Evert's weeks at number 1. I am not sure why you are talking about pre-open era people. We are talking about Evert - correct? Now, I am asking a very simple question. Who was the number 1 for most of the last 1/2 of 1974 and most of 1975? If it was Evert. Then why not credit her with the weeks. The topic of the thread which is Serena vs Evert in number of weeks. Let's focus on that.
