Pulmonary Embolism Causes
Several factors can make someone more likely to develop a blood clot that can eventually break loose and travel to the lung.
•Immobilization: A stroke, broken bone, or spinal cord injury can result in confinement to bed so that clot formation can occur in either the arms or legs.
•Travel: Prolonged travel, such as sitting in an airplane or a long car trip, allows the blood to sit in the legs and increases the risk of clot formation.
•Recent surgery
•Trauma or injury (especially to the legs)
•Obesity
•Heart disease (such as an irregular heartbeat)
•Burns
•Previous history of blood clot in the legs (DVT) or PE
Just about anyone who travels frequently is at a higher risk of developing an embolism. Couple that with a person who has recently been recovering from a "foot" surgery (somewhat immobilized), and who is not height-weight proportionate by medical standards....
Obesity in this case cannot be ruled out as a factor. Morbid obesity would be someone 100+ pounds overweight. Serena Williams is not morbidly obese, but her most recent inactivity since July has most likely increased her BMI.
All this on the heels of her tweeting about Justine. People should really learn how to handle their grudges better, because life has a way of working these things out in unexpectant ways.
Expect an announcement of retirement in the coming weeks from her and her aloof sister. That foot will never heal properly while undergoing concurrent anticoagulant therapy, oh no it will not.
Buh-bye big girl.
