Serena Williams' last match: The Most Watched Tennis Match in ESPN's History

Indeed, but as you see in this thread, some want to see tennis as a pampered, isolationist country club sport, overpopulated by mousy personalities that would have killed the sport if not for the rise of the players you mentioned.

When players act like a spoiled brat it does not actually separate them from being a pampered country club brats. It confirms what the rest of America thinks of them already.

Woefully incorrect as usual. The historic ratings and on-site attendance records are merely more evidence supporting the fact that Serena is a legend of the sport and in popular culture, and there's not a thing you and the others fueled by blood hatred can do to change that truth.

Only a fool would think I am talking about "on-site attendance" when I am addressing whether she should be an announcer. Have you never actaully attended a sports event so you do not realize the people "attending on site" do not listen to announcers? I am talking about people tuning in to watch on television. They are not necessarily invested in the whole serena worship cult to the extent that people taking time off of their weekend and paying ticket would be. Only fans are the ones paying live ticket prices and taking the time to watch serena live. The rest of the fans see she is a narcisist and might tune in to celebrate she will finally stop ruining tennis with her presence.

Thundervolley perhaps grew up in a country club so has no idea what the typical American sports fan is like.

Correct. As I wrote in another thread, Americans don't love sports (look at the ratings for a great match between two less popular players in the 3R of the USO), but they do love celebrities, events and media spectacles. This was certainly that in spades.

Americans love sports just not country club sports like tennis because they are full of spoiled brats. Every week there are college football games that out rate Serena's final tennis match.

Wasn't that against Clijsters? Or am I misremembering?

You are correct. There was also the incident in the final with Stosur.

"Australia's Sam Stosur won her first Grand Slam title - but her US Open victory was overshadowed by Serena Williams's verbal abuse of the umpire.
The ninth seed gave a hugely impressive performance to win 6-2 6-3.
But Williams is facing a fine after telling umpire Eva Asderaki: "You're out of control" and "You're a hater, and you're just unattractive inside."

You are ill-equipped to know what the "rest of America" thinks. If you possessed such a skill, you would not be in this thread spewing pure, agenda-soaked BS as you do now.

Have you never actaully attended a sports event so you do not realize the people "attending on site" do not listen to announcers?

Now, your BS has been exposed. I've attended the USO a number of times over the decades, varions superbowls, etc. and it has been common to see attendees in the radio days listen to commentary with an earpeice while in the seats, just as its common to see people follow commentary from broadcasts on their phones today. for many, getting that perpective is part of the experience.

Clearly, you have no experience among real fans at real events for you to make such an assbrained claim. Then again, that is quite common for some who always soil any thread where Serena is a subject or even mentioned.

I am talking about people tuning in to watch on television. For you to whine as you do (and get a nod from one just as sheltered as you seem to be) conclusively proves you are not among the typical American sports fan.

The only thing ESPN could do to top this might be a big reveal of what Karl looks like without his rug.

Yawn.

Who's Serena? Do you mean that lady that retired a long time ago? Why is anyone talking about that ancient history?

What is the most watched tennis match in history?
I am guessing Li Na winning the French Open with 116 million TV viewers, just in China, nevermind elsewhere watching the final?
Pretty sure that must trample all over whatever match is at No. 2.
Go WTA!

One option is to go to the event. It’s free today (not night). So if you like doubles it’s a good day to go.

Wasn't that against Clijsters? Or am I misremembering?

The ball-shoving incident was in the semis of 2009 US Open against Clijsters. Serena was facing a match point from Clijsters when she was foot faulted on serve and then threatened the line-judge who footfaulted her. The latter reported her to the umpire who then had a 3 way discussion about it with Serena and the referee. The outcome was that Serena was docked a point which meant she had defaulted the match to Clijsters (who was winning anyway). Clijsters went on to beat Wozniacki in the final.

Possibly a blessing as she would have been defaulted.

It's like saying some chick from WNBA with 10 titles is greater than Jordan.

More like a featherweight thinking he is better than a heavyweight. He wouldn't stand a chance in the ring against the heavyweight, but is entitled to think he is better because he had a better career and achieved more big titles.

Serena might actually weigh more than Pistol.

Bad comparison. If you want to take the box rout, compare quality of men and women boxing, not categories.

Tennis is divided into categories. Those with Y chromosomes and naturally high testosterone putting them totally out of reach of those without.

Serena has dominated her category in the open era better than any male has dominated his. Pure facts, more slams in singles and doubles and the most success at the Olympics than any male.

She's the best tennis player of all time in the same way that some might argue that Sugar Ray Leonard was, even though obviously he would have been flattened by even a competent heavyweight.

serena has 39 GS titles in singles and doubles, martina has 59 lol.
the only record serena holds is the "singles grand slams in open era". if thats enough to be GOAT then so be it.
but for "all time", she doesnt even hold that record, margeret court does.. so technically serena literally holds no records. is that enough to be GOAT?

True. Although they tend to use 'blood' imagery. She definitely has the fanatics she deserves. Still, they can happily watch her groom her daughter for media stardom.
Every cloud.

Every of the tennis greats has the fans she or he deserves.

Almost no one outside her home country (which population is known to be very patriotic) thinks that Serena is the GOAT.
However, many of her American fans simply can’t grasp that. People whose experience with foreign countries is limited to Tijuana or Vancouver.

You do realize this is only about the US right? Maybe news
for some, but it is not the only country in the world.
Serena worshipper needs to open his/her eyes because America doesn't represent the entire universe but only a fraction of the world's population.

Serena‘s most impressive record for me is that she won her last slam 17.5 years after her first. Made her last slam final exactly 21 years after her first!

Her longevity is her most lasting legacy.

Says the cretin who thinks Federer--who was incapable of winning the Grand Slam (thus he would never be a GOAT player) and is third in majors count of his generation (yeah, that "Naydoll and Djokoveech am diffent geeneration than my lord Fed, capiche?" crap you spew is not supported by anyone who knows what a tennis generation is and followed tennis for decades--unlike you) is some sort of GOAT. Positively amusing...if your level of ignorance was not so damned shameful.

Never understood the mainstream appeal of Serena. . She wasn’t exactly a model human being or someone to look up to.

Agree. ^^^ this is a more accurate description of why people don't like her--yes even in the US. Not buying the media shoving her down our throats just because she has a great serve and winning record. Also would have to be an inspirational athlete in the way well-rounded and benevolent role models are and she isn't that. IMO, you have to take the athlete more on the whole and she is too selfish and self-absorbed, had too many bad incidents and really don't know many charitable things she's done at all, especially relative to her fortune and her time off "working". Lol, yes I know they dug up some good photos for the montage. For someone to look up to, I can think of many more inspirational people.

Losing Elizabeth II has ruined my day. She embodied class, dignity and self-control in very difficult situations, including WWII.
Maybe Serena can share what she thinks is the international spotlight on herself?

Who actually cares what a former tennis pro thinks about the death of the Queen?
