ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates(AP)—Usain Bolt has won his second Laureus Sportsman of the Year award, and Serena Williams won the woman’s prize.

Bolt won three gold medals at last year’s track world championships and set world records in the 100 and 200-meter races. Williams, who also earned the award for a second time, won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles and regained the No. 1 ranking.

Kim Clijsters earned the award for the Comeback of the Year. Clijsters won the U.S. Open last year after she was absent from tennis for two years to get married and have a baby.

Bolt is very deserving, but I don't think Serena really did enough to merit "sportswoman of the year"...

First serious competition for Federer at the Laureus since 2004(when Schumacher and Armstrong were still relevant) and he loses, not a coincidence.

This tops obama getting the nobel peace prize. Sending more troops is peace much like serena complaining after a win is sportsmanship.

Congratulations to the winners.

is this a joke?
So the damage Serena did on USO 09 is also to be part of her "sportsmanship"?

It is a joke. Federer’s performance > Serena in 2009, a role model to the sport while Serena did the opposite. Bolt did it only at the Olympic and it lasted only a few weeks. A few events doesn’t equate to a full year of playing tennis.

And some of the crazy fans in here call Federer as one of the most overrated player on the tour. LOL!

I think Bolt set 2 new world records in his sport in 2009. Fully deserved.

Congrats to the winners.

Only one I have a slight issue w/ is Clijsters - nothing wrong w/ taking a year or two sabbatical, but should that entitle you to a special award for coming back to your job?

To me "comeback" should mean from injury or other adversity, not a voluntary leave to get married/have a kid

Eh TMF I think you are over the top, but I agree serena should not win this award

1) USO incident

2) how can you 'best represent' your sport when you can barely bother to participate in events outside the Slams?

Congrats to Bolt!

Apparently Mr. Bolt was quite some serious competition for Rafa as well last year. Must be a hell of an athlete! :)

Thank you for being civilize and not attacking me.

Serena, upon being told of her achievement, gave a very brief statement to the press: "I'm going to take this f'n award and shove it down your f'n throat, so help me god."

Sportsmanship anyone?

Bolt is phenomenal and deserves it, but Serena? It's just way too easy for female tennis players to bag these kind of awards.

Yeah, I mean Bolt fully deserved the men's award. But if you look at Serena... I mean Fed's achievements eclipsed hers this year cos of the records he broke, but yet he didn't win the men's award, whilst she won the ladies'.

I told you, I only have a problem with you when you make unreasonable criticisms.

I think I was pretty fair, I didn’t give any player special treatments. All are responsible for their action, not just tennis but athletes from other sports.

Honest question. Why is Bolt deserving of the award?

I don't follow athletics, and am rather ignorant about it. But he did break some significant record thing in 09 (wow I sound like an idiot...). Either Bolt or Fed would have been good choices for sportsman of the year.

I am not surprised Serena won but she did not deserve to. That has nothing to do with the incident. She certainly was not the most dominant female athlete. Lindsay Vonn and Britta Steffan for example had far more dominant and successful years than she has. They were light years greater and far and away the best in their sports than Serena was in hers. This award has a ridiculous history of overrating female tennis players though. Just look at Capriati's win in 2002 which is the biggest farce of all time.

Yes it seems if any women tennis player has a half decent year they are always given the award even if 5 others or more had better years in their sports. It is pretty silly even as a tennis fan.

Haha. Serena wins a sportsmanship award. That is truely ridiculous!

Just to point out to people, the award is for sporting achievement, not sportsmanlike conduct. Of course, Serena still wouldn't deserve to win, but saying she didn't deserve to win cos of USO09 maybe isn't exactly correct.

Just the point I was going to make about people not differentiating between "sportsman/sportswoman" and "sportsmanship". The Laureus award is for the former.

Congrats to Usain Bolt. Can't really quibble though I was hoping Rog would swing it. Usain Bolt, 3 golds and 2 new WR's in 100 metres and 200 metres, clipping more than a tenth of a second off BOTH. Not surprising he edged out Fed.

Maybe because tennis is the #1 Female sport. Politics as usual. Who cares about these silly awards anyway? They never dole them out fairly.

I don't think she is a disgrace. Sure, she went off at the Open, but I think it was warranted, especially considering she and Venus have been the most cheated women in the history of the sport. I can't think of any other woman who has been cheated as much as they have.

Agreed, but Pellegrini > Steffen.

What's really ridiculous is that people actually think this is a sportsmanship award. Haha.

Always, not just then. She threatened Martinez-Sanchez too.

How come alpine skiers are rated so much higher than XC skiers and biathletes? Is it just because americans like to watch the former once every four years?

The nominees:

2010
Serena Williams (USA) Tennis
Shelly-Ann Fraser (Jamaica) Athletics
Federica Pellegrini (Italy) Swimming
Sanya Richards (USA) Athletics
Britta Steffen (Germany) Swimming
Lindsey Vonn (USA) Alpine Skiing

Can't believe Fraser is on that list. She wasn't even the fastest 100m sprinter in -09.

Although I am a Serena fan, I think she should not have gotten the award (even though the award is not for sportsmanship) because of the USO incident. I don't know much about how the winner is chosen but if I would definitely not have given Serena the award........bad timing at best.

Serena winning this makes it an absolute joke. Plenty of female athletes more deserving, I am quite surprised she was nominated to be honest.

Why does it have to be because of the U.S Open incident. She flat out was not the best female athlete or most dominant female athlete period. If it were voted purely on merit Vonn would have won in a runaway, with Pellegrini 2nd, and Steffen 3rd. Sanya Richards, Fraser, and possibly Serena shouldnt have even been nominated with only 6 nominees. The Korean figure skater Yu Na Kim definitely was a more worthy nomination than any of those, as well a more truly dominant womens track athlete like Allyson Felix. Truly a joke all around.

As I said,I don't know much about how the winner is chosen but I don't think she should have even been considered for the award based on incident at the USO.( I do realize it is not a sportsmanship award) I honestly don't really watch the winter sports and very little track and field so although I've heard of these players I know very little about them so I'm not going to put my two cents in where that's concerned. I watch more of the traditonal American sports.

Yup, including a French female umpire advising her opponent to challenge a call. Not to mention how they were treated in IW as teenagers. At some point, it is going to boil over.

Anyone know who serena's competition was in this? 3 tournament victories and taking number 1 from an injured safina isnt very impressive.

To all Roger fans.

Unless Usain breaks the world records again this year, Roger has already had success in 2010 so no doubt he'll be a contender for next years award.

Which situation was this where a French female umpire told her opponent to challenge a call?

Federer got the short end of the stick....everyone knows Federer deserve to win and Serena does not.
