Serena Williams, Usain Bolt win Laureus Awards

I dunno, Fed had a great year and all, but its not like he racked up 10 MS events, won the YEC in addition to the 2 slams.

However that said, he did break Pete's record so, career slam and won Wimbly so......its a close call.

I don't know much about Bolt or what he accomplished, but I'm not surprised someone could have beaten Federer in 2009 for the award. It was a great year for him, but he's had better years in terms of the year itself (maybe not in terms of milestones, though).

I do agree that it is ridiculous that Serena Williams won the award. Surely, there are more deserving female athletes based on accomplishments alone.

It seem like in men’s tennis, you have to win 3 GS per year to win the award. Rafa won 2 GS in 2008 and Roger won 2 in 2009, but both year Bolt took home the award.

That’s insane to expect to win 3 GS per year to surpass Bolt.

You guys still don't get why Serena won. What does Laureus rhyme with if pronounced in a certain way?

BigAss.

Got it now?

In a straight line :)

Athletic yes, sportsman no.

In the true historical Olympic sense, running would be considered the real sport, not hitting a ball with a stick. That started out in a French monastery where priests played by hitting balls with their palms against a wall.

cant understand this decision very well, but oh well..
I suppose it would be too much for 3 tennis players winning awards in a single year-already it seems to be a little favouritism for tennis.

Lindsey Vonn has had a remarkable world cup and Olympic season.

She's also the kind of female athlete awards should be celebrating because there is no denying her athleticism.

Think of it this way. While it would be easy to imagine Lindsey Vonn playing tennis, how laughable would it be to imagine Serena skiing downhill?

But Bolt already won it last year. His 2008 > 2009 since he did it at the Olympic, which he will be remember the most. Meanwhile Roger 2009 >> 2008, that’s when he placed himself in history for breaking the GS record. Bolt deserved it in 2008, but again in 2009? No way.

I agree, but Fed has more than enough already so no complaints.

For me, Serena Williams skiing downhill would be no more laughable than Lindsey Vonn playing tennis, because they're both tremendous athletes. For you, Serena skiing would be laughable because you wouldn't like her even if she found a cure for cancer.

If not Serena, then whom?

I don't really follow any female sports, but there must be someone who did more for their respective sport than Serena. She won 2 slams; sure it's good, but hardly seems worthy of the award. Fed and Rafa have both won 2 slams before and not won the award despite nomination.

I notice a couple of people above are trying to say that people are only disapproving of Serena winning the award because they don't like her. That's not true in my case; I'm pretty indifferent towards Serena, but I simply do not think her achievements were enough to win this award.

Agreed. Vonn's so-called athletic skill would not place her on the map of tennis, considering the particular physical demands. Any theories entertaining Vonn as anything more springs from pure, fanboy fantasy. Nothing more.
