Ramos was a joke. For those who are quick to support Ramos by saying Serena's coach admitted he coached, her coach also said that this goes on in every tournament. Everyone watching that game, including the announcers, could see that Serena wasn't looking at her coach when he was sending the hand signals. Even on the 3rd game conduct violation, he got too sensitive and takes a game away in a close Grand Slam finals for calling him a thief? C'mon.

Serena is a drama queen. No doubt. Ramos seemed like one himself too today.
Maybe she should kept her temper in check & her mouth shut-the coaching & racquet abuse really meant nothing, but her colossal ego couldn't let it go & then besmirched the character of the umpire which is what led to the game deduction. But she would have lost anyway-she is just a prima donna egomaniac.

Indian Wells is ready and waiting. Better weather.
Indian Wells would be a way better crowd and better venue overall. Major sporting events in America are way better when a smaller locale is able to take ownership of the event and build mystique. Examples- College World Series in Omaha, the Masters in Augusta. Both of those would be way worse if they were held in NYC, downtown LA or Chicago.

Even though it'd never happen the USO would almost certainly be a better event away from NYC.

The 2nd violation is key. Since she already had a warning she should have known she can’t smash her racquet. The 1st violation might have been her coaches fault but you still need to be aware.

Also Naomi needs to celebrate this more. Enough of this already.

now, in the press conference, Serena is talking about how she will explain to her daughter that Life isn't fair.

I am sick to my stomach.

Did anyone else hear say "She stole a point from me!" meaning that Naomi stole it from her. Her husband must be nuts.

Way to Osaka after a big drama scene by Serena you kept your poise and finished the match with class. Most other players would have caved but you played a great match and deserve all the credit and would have won the match even without the penalties. You gave Serena the mother of all shellacking.

Dude. What are you talking about? She verbally berated the chair and questioned his integrity repeatedly after he CORRECTLY gave her a warning for coaching. Despite her righteous indignation, her coach admitted it was coaching. Whether the abuse warranted a game or not, alleging that she simply said "thief" under her breathe is disingenuous. You can debate if the penalty was appropriate on that stage (probably not), but the behavior was out of line. That's the risk you take when you keep pushing the line. I wouldn't let my kids act like that. ( I too have a daughter.)
She didn't berate him. She was simply questioning why she got a code violation for the first alleged offence which in addition to the racket abuse violation(justified) gave her a point penalty. How is repeatedly questioning the umpires decision deemed as bersting the official

I've seen bad officiating overall at the USO in lots of matches this year. She focused to much on being accused of coaching instead of playing. Move on and strategize. Why keep bringing it up on changeovers? It's a championship match and you're down a set.

Yup. Lack of self-control plus a sense of entitlement topped off by playing the victim.

yes, I don't think Serena knew the rule. She could have prevented all the drama by not smashing her racket and accepting that Pat Mo was giving her signals and she definitely saw it because Serena said "he was giving me the thumbs up" which was part of the coaching signals Pat Mo gave.

NK got a warning and a fine for his water bottle gestures (simulating masturbation).
Nadal received a coaching violation warning at IW in 2013 or 14.
Ryan Harisson has gotten warnings and point penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct.
I’d say it’s consistent.
Well a coaching violation and unsportsmanlike conduct are two different things. Usually people get called for things like cursing at the umpire or sexual gestures, but we don't usually see coaching violations or someone saying your stealing a point from me, or you're a thief to the umpire -- is that really a code violation in comparison to what we usually hear in those kinds of exchanges?

I have never seen drama like that before in any sport ever - who said women's tennis is boring?

Credit must go to the Umpire - Serena gave him a non stop verbal bollocking / bashing for must have been close to a minute or more.

Absolutely disgraceful conduct by Serena exposing her true character.

To Naomi - never seen a female player counter the awesome power of Serena that well before.

Samantha Stosur bullied Serena for power in the final once before - but that was by getting in with the first hit in the rally. This was a bit different. Naomi was hitting Serena's aggressive groundies with equal if not more pace, unbelievable!

Serena should be banned from the ATP Tour for her disgraceful rant towards the Umpire.

The most appalling rant I've ever heard by any player to a match official in the history of this sport.
The umpire owed her an apology, good grief. All the commentators are saying she was a leader lol. After she makes Osaka’s victory about Serena, are you kidding me. It’s very difficult for me to be a Serena fan. You gotta love Osaka.

Then be consistent with the rules.

Anywayy problem isn't really with the first 2 violations but the Gampe penalty was absolutely atrocious officiating.
Because? If I was the umpire, I’d have cited her for verbal abuse about two tirades earlier. She has absolutely no right to call an umpire a thief or demand apologies.

And the ref was entirely consistent with the rules. Just because a different ref wasn’t is no argument.

Please find a rule that states verbal abuse doesn’t include name calling. Only then can you call the third warning “atrocious”.

No one robbed her or something she always does this to herself. Now she is also acting and plays VİCTİM card ohh ı am mother ı never cheat blah blah. It is pretyy clear both in todays match and the match she did have with Clijsters many years ago she was soundly beaten anyway and lost her nerves completly. New York crowd also terrible. What the hell are they booing ?? Serena seriously neeeds to be fined for her behaviour and needs threapy. She seriously have no control on her emotions and she isnt a teenager or something.

I agree. She shouldn't have let that get to her (and being able to move past those kinds of distractions is part of figuring out how to win). She failed at that so Naomi deserved to win. If you are wronged on the court during the heat of the match. Serena gets wronged a lot it seems, but she also carries it on for much longer than it should go on which I think angers the umpire to the point where they get an itchy trigger finger.

Serena continued to argue with him. She could let it go and concentrating the match.
She kept saying you owed apology and say “sorry” to me.
Think that someone keep saying those comments continuously.
Ramos was sick and tired of it and waiting for any bad word to give her penalty.
Or Ramos might have a bad memory with “thief” hahahaha.

Serena was talking about “ Women’s equality” but I don’t think that’s not matter of Women’s equality issue.

Whatever you think of Serena and Naomi (and I adore Naomi), there is no doubt in my mind that the chair acted improperly.

I think there was gender bias at work. The first coaching violation? Deserved. The second violation? Deserved.

But I cannot begin to count the number of times men have sat in their chairs on changeovers and had heated discussions with umpires, and nothing whatever happens. But when it is Serena, it is a game penalty in the final. Insane. Her words were actually civil -- saying she deserved an apology, no profanity, no threats.

Need more proof?

In this same tournament, we had a chair umpire come out of his chair to basically coach Kirios in front of God and everyone. The proper response would have been to enforce the code of conduct, but no. Ump goes easy on the man, and USTA backs up the umpire.

By that standard, Ramos should have come out of his chair and talked to Serena, calm her nerves, tell her he wants to help her. Nope -- game penalty (when the tirade was over and he could have let it go) to put Serena's opponent a game away from the championship.

Congratulations to Naomi, but what happened today was rooted in disparate treatment and sexism.

Okay that’s cool but remember this.

SHE HAS A DAUGHTER!
What does Serena having a daughter have to do with what happened on court today? I am sure her daughter did not see the match. I was rooting for Osaka but did not think Serena deserved a game penalty, even though she should have shut up after she got the point penalty for smashing her racquet. Sometimes, Serena is her own worse enemy. Also, I thought the controversy would have shaken up Osaka and cause he to lose momentum butthankfully, her last service game was near perfect.

Yeah, I'm sure she's enjoying Serena's downfall.

I hope that she wishes Osaka hadn't had her moment of triumph tainted. But with luck, Osaka will go on to win a slew of Slams and that will make up for not being able to enjoy her first one properly.
