Foot Fault is a S.L. Rule. Coaching is not explaining some of the controversy. And there should never be a S.L. rule I’m which someone other then the player can result in the player losing a point.

How about instead the first time is a warning and a second time the coach must leave the match and watxh from the lounge ?

Wait, I am very confused now. Does the player have to participate in coaching or no? I think they don't and I think the USTA statement made that clear.

Perhaps I wasn't clear re: strict liability - by that I only mean that the player needn't invite or participate in coaching in any way in order to be penalized. It only matters whether the box did do (or try to do) coaching.

I don't even want to watch videos of what happened because of how hard it would make me cringe. Serena seems like someone who is too used to playing the victim card.

Serena says the word thief and gets a game penalty. Double standards are 100% there. I hate what she did but the punishment on these things are so poorly handed out.

She carried on a little more than just mumbling the word "thief" under her breath...

Maybe Serena will learn from this. Stop with the hand signals. Stop berating chairs.

It’s funny how it’s totally fair for her to get signals and then rant about it but when she faces consequences it’s “totally not fair”

I saw it on a commercial a few times during the USO..the constant message was "mamma said knock you out"...
An endorsement of violence?? A slogan of a fierce competitor....? A role model..? A products spokesperson?
Can't wait til the next commercials come out...Nike ?
What an exciting time in marketing and advertising..

Yes he should have. Very disappointing attitude from the USTA. They shouldn't have been trying to placate a player.

I hope they at least issue a statement standing up for Ramos.

US Open official statement on women's final between Williams and Osaka
Saturday, September 08, 2018

US Open statement on women's final:

On the fifth point in the second game of the second set between Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams, the chair umpire witnessed coaching taking place from Williams' coach. Even though her coach has admitted to coaching, Williams has made it clear that she did not receive any coaching. Nevertheless, in accordance with the rules, Williams was assessed a Code Violation, resulting in a warning.

At the completion of the fifth game of the second set, Williams was assessed a second code violation for racquet abuse, which required a point penalty.

At the changeover, at 4-3, Williams was assessed a third code violation for verbal abuse in the judgment of the umpire, which then required a game penalty.

The chair umpire's decision was final and not reviewable by the Tournament Referee or the Grand Slam Supervisor, who were called to the court at that time.

Did Federer berate the umpire for 15 minutes before that?

BTW, calling the umpire a thief is worse than what Fed said, no doubt.

Fed was behaving like a petulant child there too, but he got a hold of himself and didn't go on and on and on. IIRC the ump told him that was enough after that ourburst, and that was it.

Ramos was using his power as umpire to unfairly humiliate and embarrass one of the athletes. Sounds like bullying to me, man.

Again, the bigotry of low expectations appears.

Why is it when a man does these things, he’s held rightly responsible, but when a woman does the same things, she’s made into a victim and everyone else is to blame?

Women aren’t children.

if you watch the tennis channel feed, it has both Williams and Ramos in the same shot. Williams was relentless in her tirade and Ramos was nodding along trying to calm her. She yelled ‘don’t talk to me’ and he nodded ok and turned away. Then she called him a liar and he was taken aback. It was clear he thought about calling a violation then but he didn’t. Then after another 30 seconds of abuse she called him a thief and he called it.

I’m against the coaching call because I honestly don’t think he would have called that against a male player in a grand slam, but the last one was definitely on Williams.

He should have been a part of the ceremony. Also he should also be allowed to explain his stance.

He should have been asked if he has a daughter too, if so may be he fought for her right too. Who knows?!
No he shouldnt have.

No one came to see Carlos Ramos.

This match wasnt about him.

He should have done his job to facilitate play not to inject himself and his drama into the outcome.

Yeah ignore facts mate, it makes you look clever. He gave a code violation to Murray for saying "stupid umpiring" Now I know Murray second serves like a girl, but he is in fact a man

I don't believe he should have. Murray should've been allowed a moment of benign frustration. Tennis is an emotional game.

It depends on the situation. Insulting an umpire deserves a code violation in every case.
It depends on the situation. Oh look at you just making rules up as you go along, clearly the rules are inconsistent if someone swearing goes unpunished but another swearing doesn’t. That’s the point I’m making is all. I hate what Serena did, just showing the double standards. Kyrgios tanks and he gets coached. Funny.

You’re a victim?

I guess you have to apologise to me for being a victim. You also have the right to verbally abuse me and threaten me.

Undeserved sympathy from mainstream media, social justice tragics, and PC former pros will arrive on Monday. Just make sure you’re up for the UPS man at 8am.

Edit: Oops did I just assume that UPS will send a man? Guess I’m sexist and transphobic. Let me know when you’d like that apology.

Yes, I am offended. You stole my good mood today. Please send me a gender-neutral apology via pm now or don’t ever talk to me again. Do it meow? I will request with the admins that you don’t post on my threads or read any of my posts on any of these ttw boards. I will get you banned. For life. Son!

BWa hahha. I am Serena, bi*ch!

Which did absolutely nothing to halt the actual match and was done after the fact. I’m sure Serena would’ve loved a fine instead of a game penalty. Just saying.
She would have gotten a fine. That's what a warning for coaching entails. That's all that would have happened if she hadn't then broken a racket, and then berated the umpire for 15 minutes and called him a thief (can't believe you try to minimize a player calling the umpire a thief for enforcing a rule, the way it is regularly enforced btw).

If swearing and insulting the umpire are in the same category to you then this is a pointless discussion.

Except he doesn't appear to have told her to bring Naomi to the net at all. He appears to have told her to go to the net herself. I don't know how you can so determinedly claim to know what he was doing when half this board can't agree on what it was (some ppl, for instance, are claiming he told her to hit down the middle).
You're focusing on the minutiae. He blatantly coached her so the code violation was appropriate. You cannot claim half the board doesn't agree? proof?

I’m not against what he did, I’m just pointing out the double standards man. If people have read my posts, I have said numerous times what she said and did was wrong, I’m just saying the rules need to be much clearer on these things.

You don't think male players have gotten warnings for coaching?.

Please. Stop it with the cheap sexism card. Really.

He did his job. Serena just thought she was above the rules multiple times then played the victim when she got spanked.

And Osaka was kicking her Azz regardless
