Serena withdraws from USO

Has the door closed for #24?

It’s remarkable that even after coming back from pregnancy and being so far from her prime, she made 4 finals and 2 semis 1 QF out of the 10 slams played, which is a better consistency at slams than barty and osaka.

Yes she didn’t win but still showed that she can beat the current tour even if she isn’t at her best. She looked terrible in the finals she lost. She let the pressure of 24 get to her.
And she hasn't been able to find a way to deal with that pressure at all, and as the defeats pile up at her age, and that unfortunate incident at Wimbledon where she was hurt in the first round, the road is just that much more difficult. I would say she needs the draw to open up, but sadly for her, even that hasn't helped her cause.

Yes I thought she looked great at this years AO beating sabalenka and halep b2b in straights but then just fell apart against osaka. It’d have been interesting to see her at wimby this year.

The days of winning 7 matches at a GS have been gone for a while.

The door has already closed. The least she could do is lose some weight. She is so fat now, anyone who moves her from side to side automatically wins the point because her movement is so awful.
She certainly could stand to train harder all around. Her talent is there, but every excess pound, be it muscle or fat, only taxes the body more.
If she wants to win a slam and go all the sets it takes, she’s gonna have to take weight off her body.

She is the greatest player of the century!
Say what you want about her character, but she always was a fighter and head and shoulders above all those current snow flake pretenders.

Same with Nadal. He's carrying a lot of excess weight. He's 17lbs heavier than Djokovic apparently, which is a lot of extra weight to be carrying around when you're an older player.

Reaching Court will remain an unfulfilled dream for Serena it seems. Court remains the Goat as of now with 24.;)
Now Court will forever be the G8-Bat.
Court is not GOAT. Most of her results are inferior, either because she achieved them before the Open era or because she won many titles at the AO, which in her time many elite tennis players skipped. Court is, in a way, an Emerson of women's tennis, she has the most grandslams, but of inferior quality, so it is not considered GOAT.

On the bright side, we're spared all the media hype.
Realistically she's been a sideshow for a few years now. Yes she can reach a final (and even that is becoming more difficult) but has been soundly beaten generally. If both Kerber and Halep can take her apart on the Wimbledon grass, then less and less players will fear her.

Thats why she has only actually won 1 singles title since coming back? She can compete but even outside the majors when there isn't as much pressure she hasn't been winning titles. I'm not saying this to attack Serena, But I think there is more at play then just the pressure to equal Court. She had a major health scare during her pregnancy, add in all her other injuries over the years, and being a mom, shes not the same player she was 10 years ago.

Don't see the fuss about number 24. Everyone knows the circumstances surrounding Court's slams.

She's surpassed Graf which is all that matters in my book.
It's mostly a fuss because Williams has been chasing this Holy Grail avidly. And the media perpetuate it.

She hasn’t played a lot of tournaments outside the slams, they were merely warmups and she sucked on clay. If she can reach 4 finals, she’s capable of winning one.

And because the only way to get people hyped about tennis nowadays, according to the media, is to show that there's a GOAT chase going on.
It makes you wonder why people even watched tennis in the 80's, when the sport reached peak popularity, and nobody even talked about the GOAT acronym.

Well she needs to start doing better and winning a warm up or 2 to get better draws at the majors, because right now she clearly needs all the help she can get. Her body isn't with her, Wimbledon was heartbreaking (say what you will, even people who hate her had to feel for her there, that was so painful to watch), shes not the same Serena who almost won the Calendar slam. She's just not. Could she win one...yes...but at this point it could arguable be more on luck than talent and ability

Only in Slam count, in about twice the time, and without a golden Grand Slam.
No way she's above Graf, she's at most on the same level.
nobody forced Steffi to retire when she did...still does have a lot of achievements Serena doesn't

can't forget Serena's doubles career though either

Doubles is usually dealt with as a separate matter.
But if we do singles + doubles, Navratilova is basically untouchable.

She can't!! You are just looking at Serena and completely dismissing the depth of the tour. She's not winning 7 matches especially when the ranking adjustments come into play and she's a low seed or unseeded.

And Fed looked fantastic in the 2019
Wimbledon but still lost. Who cares whether someone looks terrible or great in a final if the ultimate result is a loss?

In any case, Serena is done winning slams. She’s out of shape, overweight and old.

Yes I was really looking forward to seeing Serena verbally threaten another lines woman and disrupt another final by claiming she can't possibly be a cheater because she gave birth
She is a legend after all. Big loss for the WTA tour struggling with genuine stars lately ;)

Yes the tour has depth but still Serena did better than the tour in reaching finals, it’d have been a different thing had she just reached one or two finals and falling in the earlier rounds.

Yup Osaka or barty just don’t have that status yet and the tour is inconsistent. Love her or hate her but she brought a lot of interest to the tour

No, Court will only keep her slam record.
But even back in the late 80s many people thought that Navratilova and Evert were already greater.
And then the blond Golden Slam girl arrived on the scene and nothing has been the same again since.

One slam more is not enough if you trail the same person with one Golden Slam.
Not even talking about Serena's atrocious career winning percentage. In which she is more in Sabatini/Davenport territory than anything else.
