Serena's apparent weight gain obsessions

It is not surprising that eating disorders are on the increase because of the value society places on being thin. Women are given the message at a very young age that in order to be happy and successful, they must be thin. Every time you walk into a store you are surrounded by the images of emaciated models that appear on the front cover of all fashion magazines. Thousands of teenage girls are starving themselves this very minute trying to attain what the fashion industry considers to be the "ideal" figure. The average model weighs 23% less than the average woman. Maintaining a weight that is 15% below your expected body weight fits the criteria for anorexia, so most models, according to medical standards, fit into the category of being anorexic.

Teenagers need to realize that society's ideal body image is not achievable. The photos we see in magazines are not real either. Many people don't realize that those photos have gone through many touch ups and have been air-brushed to make the models look perfect. Teenagers striving to attain society's unattainable ideal image will just end up increasing their feelings of inadequacy.

Teenagers are under a lot of pressure to be thin. They are lead to believe that the only way they can be accepted and fit in, is if they are thin. They resort to starving, vomiting and eating only diet foods to try and be thin. Television is a big influence on them. They watch shows like OC and Desperate Housewives and feel they need to look as thin as the actresses on these shows. Many actresses we see on TV have endured hours of exercise and have deprived themselves of the proper nutrition in order to maintain a thin figure. Some even resort to plastic surgery, liposuction and breast implants. You just have to watch an episode of Baywatch to know that statement is true. Society is brainwashing young people into believing that being thin is important and necessary.

Diet commercials are constantly appearing on our television screens telling us that once we lose the weight, we will be happy. While your standing in the check out line at the grocery store you are surrounded by magazines claiming to have the newest and best diet. Each month another new diet appears claiming to be the diet to end all diets. Whatever happened to last month's diets that claimed the same thing? Dieting has become an obsession in North America. We spend billions of dollars each year trying to look the way society tells us we need to look. If diets really worked, then why are there so many of them? The reason a new diet pops up each month, is because last's month's diets did not work. You know, the ones that claimed to really work. The truth of the matter is that DIETS DON'T WORK. As soon as you start to diet, you automatically set yourself up for failure. Many of the diets on the market right now are also unhealthy. They deprive you of the proper nutrition your body needs to survive and these diets can lead to health problems.

The diet and fashion industries are not totally to blame for society's obsession with thinness. We are the ones keeping them in business. We buy into the idea that we can attain the "ideal" body image. We allow ourselves to believe the lies being thrown at us constantly. We buy their magazines, diet books and products, hoping that this time they will work. We are throwing away our hard earned money trying to live up to the standards that society has set for us. Be prepared to spend lots of money on your quest for the perfect diet and be prepared to never find it, because there isn't one.

It's unfortunate, but in today's society, people have forgotten that it's what's inside a person that counts, not what's on the outside. We need to start loving and accepting each other for who we are, not what we look like. Next time you decide that you are going to start another diet because you feel you are too fat, stop, sign up for a self-esteem class instead. That would be money well spent. If we learn to love and accept ourselves, we will also begin to love our bodies, no matter what size we are.

We also need to teach our children to be proud of who they are. We need to remind them that people come in all shapes and sizes, and we need to teach them to accept everyone for who they are. Parents need to also teach their children the value of healthy eating and not send the message that being thin is important. Many children, under the age of 10, are becoming obsessed with dieting and their bodies. They are afraid of becoming fat. They don't just learn this from the media, they also learn this from their parents. If their mothers are constantly dieting and expressing their desire to be thin, these young children will start to believe they also need to be thin. We need to encourage and support our children, especially teenagers. They need to feel good about themselves and their accomplishments, they need your approval and they need to know that you are proud of them. If a child is raised to love and accept who they are and what they look like, they will be less likely to strive to fit into society's unattainable standards.

No number on a scale and fitting into a smaller dress size will not make you happy. Happiness can only come from within.:D

Spooky!

Okay - that was weird, as I wasn't sure which forum i was on there for a minute; a teenage issues forum or a rap/poetry forum! However, i think Rodeo makes a good point (though no mention of tennis in it!) and I would like to add something....

All that stuff you said (which is all damn true) is part of the reason I really like tennis and female tennis players. They are great examples of the female body as it could be: strong, fit, muscular; and I think female athletes set a far, far, far better image for teenagers to aspire to. Having Serena and Venus on the cover of magazines for a few years was brilliant. They are far sexier than any scrawny, skinny model staggering along a catwalk, looking about ready to drop.

Can you imagine trying to play a two hour game of tennis on a couple of rice-cakes and a low fat health drink??!!

If it ever came down to survival of the fittest the first to go would be super-models.

Rock on female athletes! :p

Great post Rodeo!

Thinner doesn't always mean faster or stronger, and that fitness and conditioning don't work well without proper nutrition. Unlike men, women athletes often resist advice to eat more.

Regular athletics will give a person a healthy and attractive body, and fat loss doesn't solve all of your problems (and extreme fat loss even causes more issues).:D

I think female tennis players should concentrate more on getting lean than thin, but doing it the correct way!

The media which is obsessing over irrelevant topics like Serena Williams being fat when they should be writing about the WTA and it's players being run into the ground with injuries every 15 minutes!

This may blow you away but know a young woman who actually runs stadium steps to get that phat butt and thighs that you detest. Actually, wants to be thick and works out to add muscle. Serena still can get shredded like Francesca Schiavone, Ripcity

Having said all this there is no doubt she is well over her ideal playing weight.
Picture in the newspaper clearly shows she is carrying too much for professional - even her ankles are spilling over her socks

You can spout all the feel good give me some potato chips stuff you want, but Serena is overweight. No one is espusing Kate Moss sick thinness, but this is the other end of all that and not that much better. How about something in the middle like most of the other players. That said, Serena at many, many pounds overweight could probably still kick my ass on the court (and maybe off of it too).

Exactly MonkeyPox!

Who says she's obsessed about her supposed weight gain & maybe she loves herself the way she is. She's not Oprah.

And yes, what does the opening essay about teenagers, body image, blah, blah have to do with Serena Williams?

Editor's comment: OFF TOPIC

And on the flip side this country has a serious problem with obesity. I guess no one has heard of moderation anymore.

Serena's physical fitness, including her weight, has been uner scrutiny for some time now, and while there may be a certain amount of unnecessarily harsh words being said abou her, there is some truth to the connection between her weight and her physical fitness.

When Serena was dominating women's tennis several years ago, she weighed less than she did right now. Her movement was superior, and her subsequent ability to hit groundstrokes while off-balance or on the run was significantly greater than what she's capable of doing today. Her athleticism was one of the characteristics that set her apart from her competition; she was able to absolutely crush shots from any position on the court, and this made it difficult to ever feel comfortable playing against her.

If a player is carrying around extra weight, it's likely a result of not training enough to keep down to a 'fighting weight,' and thus the risk of getting injured increases. Similarly, a player's movement and ability to adjust when hitting groundstrokes is hampered by carrying 10 or 15 pounds more.

Serena's current state of physical fitness has become a source of discussion simply because it's evident how much of an impact it's having on her game. Coupling her (relative) lack of success recently with her disagreeable atitude of late has made her an easy target. I think that there is a certain element of frustration about Serena as well; fans recall how impressive her game was a couple of years ago, and it's almost painful at times to watch her try to hit one shot after another while horribly off balance, to watch her make so many unforced errors during a match, and to hear her make one excuse after another about why she lost a match.

Of course she's entitled to do whatever she wants with herself, her body and her game. But that doesn't mean that we must hold our opinions to ourselves about her current 'state' either.

wonderful intelligent post.:D

Serena Williams has never been skinny, but when she was winning she was healthy, fit, and muscular. Now she is just too overweight and it is apparent. If she wants to stay overweight that is fine but then she needs to also deal with the side effects of that which include injuries and fatigue and she needs to admit them instead of saying she only played to 10% of her potential.

As what they say in Hollywood, she's a voluptuous woman. She'll never be stick thin like a Venus or Maria.

Most of the top players always have excuses when they lose. It's always about not playing their best or they are injured. Sometimes they even come up with advance excuses for losing.

So what's new?

hey richard, how's your work with eddy coming along?

Force/Mass=acceleration Its in Serena's best interest to decrease her mass. If she loses 5% of her bodymass she'll be 5% faster, have 5% more endurance and put 5% less strain on the joints in her legs (or some combination of those of course) . Then again shes always had that nice curvy backside!
