Serena's "consistency"

Lindsay Davenport just said that Serena has trouble maintaining her 'consistency' from week to week. That sure appears to be because she doesn't stay in top physical condition like almost all of the other top women players. I think if Serena had stayed in great shape for her entire career she might have 35 to 40 grand slam titles by now.

You think she could play a full schedule for 23-24 years and not be burnt out? Remember she's been on the tour since her mid teens

Serena in Venus's body would be the ultimate tennis player. The amount of titles Serena has managed to win with "dat ass" is incredible.
But it's easy for us to say this too though, maybe it's helped her be the physical specimen she is.

Didn't see today's match, but yesterday Serena played fairly poorly against McHale. Crazy unforced errors. Regularly out of breath. Still won in 3 sets. She fights. Is mentally stronger...until getting to the final of a slam.
But yeah, after the U.S Open I thought she'd come back in better shape.

Also, she's what, 37 years old? Chris Evert always said its tougher to remain consistency and focus when one ages. Happens to the best of us.

Yeah. Seems I remember Serena talking big after the Open like she was getting rededicated and I thought she might, but I am not surprised that she's once again playing herself into better shape during the tournament.

Why didn't Graf or Navratilova end you with 30 Slams? They were much more brilliant tennis players according to this board.

Serena Williams has already dealt with the whole "not dedicated enough" thing. Remember Chrissie America's Open Letter?

Why stop at 40, 50 to 60 more like it.

Lindsay was talking about Madison Keys. The other commentator asked Lindsay what did she expect from Madison this season because she used to coach her. The conversation did happen during the Serena match though.

They did not. According to the "Tennis Warehouse Brain Trust" that would make them suspect in their inabilty to end with 30 majors. We know what is behind this double standard.

As for Davenport.....at one period of time she was able to do a player's job and win majors, but she was not a model of consistency. I am sure no one will remind her of that.

Serena Williams has already dealt with the whole "not dedicated enough" thing. Remember Chrissie America's Open Letter?
....and we know how dedicated Evert was....with certain tasks....

If the commitment was there throughout her career, she would've blown past Margaret long time.

They actually had competition. Serena plays a bunch of choking buffalos in her era.
Give Serena credit, I don't even like her but no one is accidentally that good for so long. She even almost died after giving birth and she's still snatching wigs, gotta respect it.

Are you new to tennis? Serena has completed against and beaten more slam winners than Graf and Navratilova.
Yes, brand new. Just started watching this morning. And if you think Serena is playing in a non-choke era, spare me. I saw Graf and Martina play live and the choking on WTA was minescule in the 80's compared to nowadays.

When you have mugs winning slams, because of lack of top end consistency and talent, that will happen.
As well as Serena playing part time for a lengthy period to prolong her career and cherry pick slams.
What Slams have Serena cherry picked?

But you are correct about something: The person opposite of Serena in your avatar is the muggiest person to win multi slams. All other mugs can take comfort in the fact that while they are mugs, they could never be the mug Maria is.

Not even close to being supported by facts.

Sounds like Federer
It is Federer, who only had two players truly preventing him from totally dominating two of the worst, back-to-back tennis generations in history--overflowing with hacks and check collectors who were content to roll over the second Federer walked on court.

Serena if she has the stamina could be still #1! She still has her serve and groundstrokes of old!
Kinda true. But her serve has deserted her at really times. And no way is she as fit as she has been in terms of movement. She can look really sluggish and flat-footed. I'd say her footwork has never been the best - especially moving towards the net not of her own volition- but her incredible speed negated that. She no longer has that speed.

And the groundstrokes break down more often. That's obvious from this most recent loss. A player she crushed pretty recently when 'on'.
