Serena's undisciplined lifestyle catches up to her again

How do you go from playing great tennis and winning a set 6-0 to losing 6-2 in the next and third set?

You do it because you're not in elite condition. You do it because your tennis is as inconsistent as the approach you've taken to the game for the last three years.

One of the reasons Serena HAS been injured so much and had her knee problems is that she allowed herself to get sloppy and fat. The extra pounds puts a lot on strain on various body parts--certainly the knee.

Serena still has some big time power and still has some serious tennis game. But, she shortchanged herself and her fans by allowing herself to get complacent, distracted and lazy.

Eventually, that affects mental toughness as well as movement. And Serena is still not in Graf-like, or Martina-like, or Sanchez like shape. She does not recover from long points all that well. She's too sloppy with the array of unforced errors. She has not developed other shots.

She should take a lesson from another African-American who ALSO had great success in his sport from '99 to'03. However, unlike Serena, he got BETTER. He worked even HARDER. He developed NEW and improved shotmaking skills. He ADDED to his resume, never content. That would be Mr. Tiger Woods.
Serena should ask Tiger to teach her what being a champion is really all about. Because for Serena to have gone down the toilet by age 22--with all of that talent--it is nothing short of a disgrace. 7 majors--yes, that's great. Serena could have won 15 and another 20 titles with dedication and character. She could have gone down as one of the top 4 or 5 of all time. Now, she won't even go down as one of the top 10 of all time. Her career will be marked by a period of greatness, yet a tremendous lack of dedication and underachieving. And it's all of her fault.

She has made alot of strides in her fitness and tennis in the last few months. Seeing her play this summer it is miles better then she was to start the year. You cant go from being in the worst possable shape to being in tip top phsyical and mental shape overnight. She went from a lost cause to winning a 6-0 set and ultimately losing in 3 to the #1 player in the World with 2 majors this year; and crushing this years U.S open Series winner in the previous round. Cut her some slack.

you have your points.

but keep in mind that Mauresmo is probably the queen of on-and-off performance. Also, her injuries are injuries... there is no direct correlation that her injuries happened because she picked up some pounds. Injuries are injuries... Besides, she has wide hips, so she is pre-exposed to knee injuries. I wouldnt knock on her so much.

Safin has an "undisciplined" lifestyle, i dont see you knocking on him.

Her fitness has improved dramatically since the beginning of the year, though it's still not where it once was. She's hitting the ball better now, and she wants it more. She had tears as she was walking back to the locker room. That's a good sign.

I say give her a break and give her a bit more time. You have to have some sympathy for what she's been through with her sister's murder and her parent's separation.

I would be extremely shocked if she won all 4 next year. Lets not get carried away here. She is not going to do something now she could not even do in the best time of her career.

just give her some time, she will be fine.... i feel sorry for OP's current/future kids.

yeah, she may have made mistakes but who hasnt. She does have 7 grandslam titles.

Didn't she win 4 in a row? So obviously she is capable.

I was obviously exaggerating, but I do believe this means she is serious, and she will be showing up in 2007 and at the Australian Open in some serious shape.

she should take the rest of the year off and run on treadmill, hire a real coach, watch videos of how she used to play, and plan a serious comeback for next year.

either that or quit cuz her halfa$$ efforts don't win her matches.

PAAAAALEEEEEEZZZZZZZZEEEEEE. She's not interested in tennis. She has forgotten how to train and condition herself. Look at who she has around her to help her out.
I agree with the original poster here.

I dunno. If you bagel Mauresmo, you must be a pretty decent player.

If you don't like her personality, fine. I'm not a big fan of her. But at least respect her talent. Even at her fattest, she could still beat up on most of the WTA. Now she has lost a lot of weight and she is obviously trying hard in her matches. She just came short this time, but there's no shame in losing to the world's #1.

Bad comparison. Tiger Woods got fatter too, except the that won't affect him playing golf. Last year, I gained 50 lbs, but my chess game got a heck lot better. Got my point.

Uh didn't her half sister die 3 years ago and her parents get divorced like 4 years ago? Sure it could affect her, but she was playing better tennis back then.

The MOST Tiger ever put on was about 8 pounds. Did you see him yesterday, when he shot 63 to win the Deutche Bank event (his fifth in a row). The man is lean and chiseled.

Of course he's not going to look like he did at 20 or 22. Men fill out and he's so much stronger. But, he's lean as well, very little body fat.

Serena put on at least an extra 25 pounds. Some pictures, she looks flat out beefy and fat--especially her legs, butt, thighs and face. It was ridiculous seeing a world class athlete under 25 years of age allow herself to get like that.--And her following Tiger's example is a very good comparison.

That is all true, but her lack of commitment was a problem prior to that.

I think it speaks volumes for her potential to get where she got in this year's tournament. However, as she gets older she'll find that she can't rely on talent. She should ditch momma and daddy and hire whoever Martina Navratilova has for a fitness coach. Navratilova was in exactly the same spot Serena is in, well minus about 75 pounds, and she became the most in-shape woman athlete well hell, probably ever. Serena can do it, but she has to want it. I personally think she's still too convinced that she's going to be an actress or designer or airline pilot or dessert chef. She's in terrible shape, her legs touch each other down to the knee.

"She should take a lesson from another African-American"

Why an African American? And Tiger Woods would take great exception to being called this, and has in the past as he is multiracial with a larger percentage of blood other than african american.

She is just a big, thick woman. Her body type wasn't an issue when she was younger, but as she's matured, she's lost her youthful body. She has filled out.

I'm sure she could put forth an effort to get it back. But having a knee problem sort of puts a hamper on your ability to train. And even before the surgery, she was probably being very cautious about training for fear of further damaging her knee.

Before I could ever make such an accusation, I'd like to see her work ethic compared to that of the rest of the WTA.

I don't think much of an Tiger is an athlete, and I barely think golf is a sport. More like an activity. I don't think his fitness helps his game whatsoever. He's just a little introverted and enjoys excersize and practice. Look at the fitness of the people he competes with. If John Daley can give him some competition, fitness is absolutely not a factor. Heck, there's even guys out there that can't even walk the holes and have to ride in a cart.

Serena and Venus have good skills, they would be on top of the womens game if they only decided to get a real coach.

You do it because you're not in elite condition...

At this year French Open, Roger Federer won the first set 6-1 and then he lost the second set 1-6, and this happened because he too was not in top condition ??? He looks to be in pretty good shape to me.

After her knee surgery it's doubtful even if she is in shape that she'll have the same quickness that she had before, but her talent still could put her at the top of the game. Personally I was glad to see her lose because she is so full of herself. Maybe I'm wrong, but the crowd seemed to be supporting Mauresmo more.

Serena said in her post-match interview that she is going to Europe to compete in two tournanments in order to improve her ranking so that she won't need any more wildcards.:o :o

Nah. She likes to shop there, thats what it its.

I think Serena could be number 1 again if she steps out of the hollywood lifestyle.

Serena is the type of player that can step out and come back and get into the top 10.

Venus...........hell no.

I don't think she will ever be as dominate as she was and right now there's so many good players I don't think she has it in her to get to where she was, hollywood lifestyle or not!

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the woman on the other side of the net who happens to be number 1 in the world and current holder of two slams this year  . Please, you people are worse at giving credit to Serena's opponents than she is.

serena had her run and she will never get back to be as good as once was. she will never be as lean and the older she gets the harder it will be. she deluded herself that she was some diva/actress/model/clothes designer when the only thing she is really good at is tennis and eating. ...

Amen. Someone who didn't know tennis would think that Serena entered this match as the higher seeded player.

Mauresmo's #1 in the world and has won 2 slams this year. Frankly, if she'd LOST to Serena (who, based upon reading this threads is: unfocused; twice the size of a beluga whale; unwilling to train;obsessed with Hollywood; etc.) Mauresmo should, apparently, have retired from the sport in shame.

I understand folks don't like the Williams sisters, but the extent of the bashing seems waayyyy over the top.
