Serena's Victory Speech

Did anyone else think it was terrible and embarrassing

It was but more for the crowd: they were embarassed- it was an impossible speech to deliver and accept graciously.

Everyone was rooting for Henin and she lost- and it's not like you can get over that in 5-10 minutes. All they could do was be polite and it made the whole thing awkward.

Tennis fans to me are the most fickle in all of sports for a number of reasons.

Serena had just won a prestigious tournament and a Serena-sized ass load of money- they could have chucked stuff at her and she wouldn't have cared.

At least I was rooting for Serena hehehe, and I agree she wouldnt even have given a damn about the crowd,as long they're not getting physical. If she really did care, she would have lost the final today. Moreover...such a crowd deserves such a speech. :) Where did the 2009 AO crowd go - they were such great people, cheering for both Serena and Safina, and taking the jokes well.

It's what I've come to expect from the Williams Sisters. She insulted the crowd: "All y'all was pulling for her." And gave a shout-out to her G ? ? ? ? I take it she meant gang.

I've posted it before and I'll post it again: I, Objective Danny, have yet to see how the Williams Sisters are good for tennis.

Simple, if you are good enough to beat any of them then you are really good, they definitely raise the bar.

What did she say exactly?

I think the crowd was really fair. if I'm in a stadium, I want to be a fanatic fan. Fanatic fans cheer every point their idol makes, they dont clap politely to good winners from the other player. I think tennis fans don't have to adjust to the 'higher class' image of tennis. They just shouldnt be too loud during a point, or intentionally make it harder for Serena by yelling when she serves or something.

My gosh, you people on this board are all hopeless. She can never do any right in your eyes no matter what. If she loses, you have negative comments, if she wins, you have negative comments. When she's injured, you have something to say, when she's fit, you have something to say. She owns a part of the Miami Dolphins & I'm sure people have criticism to say about that. I notice when the commentator mentioned that, Mary Carrillo kept her stupid trap shut about that.

The Williams sisters could do a ton of good stuff, but there will always be something negative to say about it.

I say a big congrats to her for winning because she probably didn't feel the best (but knowing certain people, they probably think she had her thigh wrapped up to gain pity or something) & a big congrats to her & Venus for winning the doubles.

That you have the image in your possession at all says much about you...that, and your propensity to play the Idiot Card with your utter misuse of the image.

...but i'm sure you (or your like-minded ilk and/or alias) will return to defend/flame/spiral.

oh and lest i forget, i agree that serena can be tacky but i must say the williams sisters have made tennis more popular that it ever was and have made so much money for the industry, advertisers and themselves. so they actually have helped the sport. a whole generation of kids have embraced the sport because of them, and that turns into billions of dollars in revenue for the industry as tennis is truly a sport of a lifetime.

They're American, and they win.

Did i say that simple enough for someone with dubya as their avatar?

USA#1 WOOO

Since When?

They just dropped out of the Fed Cup.

I've never heard the Williams Sisters make one positive comment about this Nation in which we live. . . . not one!

"Since when?" I really don't understand why that was asked so my answer is going to sound a bit smart assed.

They were born in California, when they play you see that little American flag next to their name, representing where they're from, if that doesn't mean they're American then your logic is beyond me. While those little flags are next to their name they keep winning doubles and singles titles.

They inspire tons of melanin-folk back in America to watch and play the game of Tennis.

I don't know why they pulled out of the Fed Cup, that one's beyond me.

Finally, since when was patriotism a requirement?

this guy is so funny. and i am sure you've been privy to every conversation or statement they've made in their entire lives. what is even more amazing is that he professes to "know" them to a sufficient extent to make sweeping generalizations. scary. very scary.

so they've played the fed cup numerous times and just recently stopped playing. oh, and you've never heard them say anything positive about the US. Bingo!, they must be anti American.

you must be related to U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy!!

In the words of Harry Reid; Are they light-skin or dark-skin? And what type dialect do they speak with?

does it really matter george? we're all different. whats the big deal. wow.
that's a good thing.

so you would like to control how everyone in the world speaks, dresses, behaves, and thinks? so that it all fits neatly into your little narrow mind.

let's see, you would probably go to france and complain that no one speaks american. or if you dared set foot in the carribean, you definitely wouldn't venture out of the club med compound. the savages and all.

embrace the world george, with all it's different people and cultures.

for no man is an island.

Oh man! You guys will never drop it! I watched the speech, what is all the fuss about.

She was trying to be funny and lighthearted, she pointed to a section of the crowd behind her when she made the comment about rooting for Henin - clearly where Henin fans congregated. CAN YOU NOT SEE THAT?????

Oh gosh, there I go again, feeding the trolls!

I missed the live match, I'm watching it now. Was it that little of a deal. I know Serena is awkward in interviews. I think she has a lot on her heart and there isn't an outlet for her real feelings. Thats why I am glad she wrote a book because I can tell she has deep waters. Positive and some not so positive. But we're all changing.

I beg to differ. She does in fact care very much as evidenced by the fact she refuses to play a tourney out in California for being booed years ago. This includes her sister.

That said, I thought the speach was OK.

I just watched it myself...and didn't hear or see anything wrong.

Serena Williams has won 12 GS singles titles now, and still doesn't get recognized by the majority of supposed tennis fans on this tennis forum as being...really freakin' awesome. I mean, she's not *my* personal favorite either, but if you can't see how she is good for tennis, then you're blind.

12-3 in GS singles finals.

Undefeated when it goes to 3 sets.

THAT'S BETTER THAN ROGER.

She doesn't play there because the crowd made racist remarks to her and her sister. It was a little more than a simple "booing".

And lol at this thread to be quite honest. Serena beats your precious Justine so you stoop to criticizing her victory speech. The hate is so tired.

She (Serena) just doesn't know how to be graceful even in victory. It's unfortunate.
But, for me, at least I'll know that 30 years from now when they rebuild the US Open stadiums and name one 'Serena Williams Court' and one 'Venus Williams Court', I will be dead and won't have to be hear it.

Lol. I love this forum and their idiocy. Oh Objective Danny she said you definitely had something to cheer for, that is not even a put down to the crowd that is definitely a compliment to Henin, what you can't acknowledge the other people's fans. It actually made Henin smile and laugh if you noticed that. There was nothing ungraceful about her speech seriously guys...she thanked all the people who are around, thanked Henin for a great match, made a shout to BJK a close supporter of her, thanked for the fact that she could play in front of the greats.

The only weird thing she said was "she had a real G moment". That's it. You guys are so crazy it's funny.

Oh Objective Danny just shut up and stop posing =] You're so obsessed with posting about something you hate that its a quite bit scary. Go do something besides post comments about how much you hate the williams sisters. As long as Serena is winning slams she is going to be here to stay. Right now it looks like it might be a while so get used to it.

Uhmm, LIES. NOT TRUE. NOT A FACT. There are several posters who were actually there and stated they did not hear one racist remark, this includes several news agencies who reported on the incident. The only one who talks about racism, is The Williams family to try and make excuses for their filthy behavior. The boos came because of Venus not playing, bascially giving Serena a walk-over.

To add, she received several racist remarks in Miami a few years back, and yet she still plays here.

Get a life, and stop making excuses for her.

I for 1, am embarassed as a countryman to have serena represent the us. She has no respect for her opponents or anyone else on the court( us open). And she has to scream like shes giving birth everytime she hits the ball. Trust me, its not that heavy.

Props to her though. She played a good match and came up big when needed. Im just happy to see justine back. Exceeded every expectation imo at this tournament. Beat quality players and came up a few break points short of beating the world no1. Itd be very interesting to see what she could do in a 6' frame.

The Williams "it's a conspiracy" BS is so lame it's not even comical. They can win and they still complain. No wonder the vast majority don't like either one and cheer against them. I say good for the people that stand up against that type of attitude.

I've never understood why we pay so much attention to things such as victory speeches... It says more about us than it does about the athlete's we support (or don't support). What is it within many of us that have to find something in someone else to tear down? This is especially true of someone who has reached the pinnacle in their respective fields. Serena Williams is a TENNIS player... I work in PR & Branding, I HAVE to communicate effectively. No one gives a damn how well I play tennis, the converse is true for Serena. Yes... guys like Roger Federer and James Blake speak coherently and sometimes eloquently... but if they sounded like bumbling idiots, the amount received for winning TENNIS matches would be the same.

The next time you write a post on a TENNIS forum, tearing someone down for something other than their TENNIS... remember, the light is shined on YOU.

Serena... has worked her butt off (ok... she still has a butt) to be one of the best ever at what she does. Have you?

but that doesn't mean i enjoy her matches and doesn't meant i dislike her any less....Fed has 15 slams and a crapload of records and well we all know how that turns out.

Well i was rooting fro henin/Fed...but that didn't work out =/.

Due to the fact that we are sitting in a tennis forum do some of you actually believe you stop negative comments. I have been on this forum for years and it still amuses me when I read comments about negative posts.
