Serve Video

It’s been a while since I posted here. Here’s a video of my serve, any advice would be appreciated. I’m looking to get some pop out of it.

If you want more pop, quit slicing it. Don't brush the ball, turn the racquet straight through it. Look up "pete sampras serve pronation" on the google for a good break down. There's lots of videos on it, and you can search these boards too.

I'd also recommend practicing your toss. It needs to be really consistent for a good flat serve. It's a little easier to get away with an inconsistent toss when you are hitting spin serves.

Looks like your shotputting from the trophy/drop, and getting alot of spin and kick from it. Not really swinging big like a pitcher or quarterback. Also your legs aren't really driving you up.

I don't think I see much internal shoulder rotation (ISR) leading to impact. Looks like the common error where edge leads and impact occurs with a slightly different angle. See serve at 49 sec. View single frame. Last two look like kicks. Same issue.

To do single frame advance on Youtube use the "."and "," keys.

To directly see your ISR before impact, tape a piece of blue painter's tape on your upper arm just above the elbow.

Study what ISR rotation is and what it looks like in videos. Search forum for my posts on internal shoulder rotation.

Serve with ISR. Imagine blue tape on part of arm between elbow and shoulder joint.

To do single frame on Vimeo, click Vimeo, full screen, hold down the SHIFT KEY and use the ARROW KEYS.

To say it a different way, at trophy, you elbow is bent as tight as it will go and your hand is way close to your ear.

Two things that caught my eye:

- You don't seem to hit the ball at the highest point. Almost looks like you have to duck to be able to hit it.
- There is some hickup in your armswing where it seems your pushing your racket more than you swing/snap it. When you swing towards the ball your elbow should go forward first, followed by your upperarm/hand/racket.

You may want to check out Cameron Nourie, playing in Hopman cup on Tennis channel. He has similar motion to yours.

Great video quality, tnx for posting.

Technically theres alot of things wromg with ur serve, specialy ur whole arm action.

I suggest a good coach to fix it in a couple of lessons.

Its going to be hard for a forum like this to help you effectively because theres so much thats completely wrong.

Beautiful mountains. Where is this?
Regarding your serve:
- Low elbow. Elbow should be aligned with the shoulders.
- Hitting hand is open up at trophy pose. Palm should be closed so that the racquet face points to the right fence.
- For kick serves, your contact point is way too far to the left (0:59) And it's not good for your back.

Thank you for the advice, it was taken in a suburb outside of Los Angeles.

pause the video at your contact point and you can see your spine is almost parallel with the court (not ideal!).

Get the toss further to the right and then try alternating throwing a ball nice and hard with serving to make your serve more like your throw. You could also do a pretend toss and then a throw, or have two balls and toss one and then throw the other one directly at it so you are doing something similar to a serve motion. You should try serving while maintaining 100% balance and then increase the pace gradually to find out where you start losing control.
