service motions of top players

Has anyone noticed the service grip of Nadal. He appears to serve exclusively with an eastern grip . While this grip generates a lot of spin it does sacrifice power. DO you think this is why Nadal has high service percentages but very few aces and average service speeds?

This has probably been discussed but has anyone noticed Federer's service toss? He throws the ball behind his head. He's probably lost some speed down the middle but it's helped him disguise his kicker and improved his second serve.

Karlovic serves with an eastern bh grip too, and I don't think he's sacrificing any power, and gets lots of aces :)

very true. But I think Karlovic has the benefit of a better service motion and legs. But your point if valid that grips don't necessarily lead to more power.

I heard Agassi say that Nadal's serve was extremely hard to return, and that's interesting coming from the best returner in the game.
Also, Nadal stands so straight on, contrary to what we're taught to do. He is just an unbelievable talent.

Do you mean that Nadal serves with an Eastern forehand or backhand grip?

I meant a eastern backhand grip. I've never actually used an eastern forehand grip on my serve. Do you think Nadal's grip allows for a tough slice serve .

In any case, what do you think of Federer's awkward ball toss. we are also taught to toss the ball in front of us. Does anyone think Federer's strategy is appropriate?

well pete always used the same toss for every serve, out in front and slightly to the left. if i were to use disguise serving as my primary serving tactic (which i do) id rather copy pete's technique than anyones. but i guess disguise serving is good however you do it, as fed ends up holdin serve pretty well.

Think about someone you play who doesn't ace you but you can't really attack his serve. Thats what I see in Nadal.
