Gets to the heart of the dominance issue. Better than Game W% (see followup post), esp when comparing across surfaces, as on grass it's harder to break.
- Only five perfect set records at OE slam, and Borg has three of them:
Bjorn Borg 1976 Wimbledon 21-0 100.0%
Bjorn Borg 1978 Roland Garros 21-0 100.0%
Bjorn Borg 1980 Roland Garros 21-0 100.0%
Ilie Nastase 1973 Roland Garros 19-0 100.0%
Ken Rosewall 1971 Australian 15-0 100.0%
- note McEnroe at 1983-84 Wimbledon (two lost sets); Lendl at 1985-87 US
Open (three lost sets); Federer at 2003-04 Wimbledon (three lost sets)
- For dominance in one calendar year, appropriate that 1984 McEnroe heads
the list. Federer last year was the best over all four slams; edging out
Vilas 1977. Sampras 1993-94 reinforces my view that those years were his
overall peak, as opposed to later when his game was fine-tuned only for
Wimb/US. Conspicuous by its absence in the top ten is Laver 1969; it only
ranks 18th and belies the notion that he easily rolled over weak fields.
Wilander 1988 and Connors 1974 are also well down the list. I am not saying that Noah 1983 had a better year than Laver 1969; only providing a little more detail than the usual simplistic view of counting up the slam wins.
