Well I was a Rafa fan as i love his rawness vs the yuppy stereotype image of the egoist that was Fed.
I would have loved to see an altruist Roger but instead saw alot of Mirka traits in him tonight
Either way Nadal I feel will make him feel old tomorrow for the first time on a fast hard court in 20017

I didn't see the first set, but fed played nearly as well as he could in the 2nd and 3rd sets. Not sure what else you expect him to do !
and from the stats, it was just one loose service game in the 1st set.

Djoko has loads of fans outside of Serbia (including 2 of my friends), yet if you listened to some of the folks here, they'd tell you he has so few fans outside of Serbia.
When I was there in Indian Wells earlier this year, the practice court was full for Djoko's session and there was quite a bit of support for him in the match
(not as much as Fedal obviously, but still obviously a very popular player)

It's not impossible if,say, Federer were to win Paris and London and Nadal were to do poorly at those events. The gap is currently 2,370 ranking points and Paris and London would account for 2,500. Both of them can only keep gaining points as neither has anything to defend at any of the remaining events of the season.

Nadal has been playing well, he is going to go deep everywhere and so chances of Fed for No 1 is ruled out even if he wins 2-3 tournaments.
If Fed can grab the win tomorrow , get YEC and not lose to Rafa this year... I cannot ask for anything more.

He does not need to replicate. He needs to win Dubai and go little deep in AO-IW-Miami. Novak defends 2000 points and Nadal 6500 points before Grass season. Nadal would find it difficult to defend those points and he may drop around 2000 points. So Fed needs to add as much as he can now. Best chance for Fed to become No.1 is before Grass Season. Who knows. He may play one final Clay tournament if there is a chance to become No.1.

There was no sign of an injury during the Federer match, he hit some crazy topspin backhands, CC or down the line, so the wrist is fine.

I never said I wasn't happy that he didn't injured himself, but I strongly believe those were some antics in the Troicki match. He took a break and had a painful face, yet came back and start ripping his forehand in the very same game and caught Viktor off guard. The match against Thiem was symptomatic as well, looked like a zombie out there, but miraculously recovered and won the match. About the bolded: exactly, he didn't hit a single 2-hander after that fall, only slices and forehands.
And at the USO he had a cold, not Anthrax. People on this board overreacted as always. That was 50% Thiem's choking and 50% Del's clutchness.
Take a look at all the other comments, they sound like brainwashed members of some kind of sect. I like Fed but all that cult behavior is disturbing. I'll never be a member of that group.

I didn't watch the Troicki match, but I was there at the US Open , including at the delpo-thiem match and delpo looked clearly off colour in the first 2 sets.
A guy sitting next to me said at the start of the match (mid-way through the 1st set) that he had heard that delpo was not well.
I don't see any reason to call that as false or shenanigans to be honest.

I was thinking the same and was actually applauding his fighting spirit while he was coming back against Thiem, but something is telling me that this guy is not totally honest. I could be wrong, but he's "under radar" now.

I agree. Delpo has suffered injuries during his career, but he can be overly dramatic with his woe-is-me antics on the court. One never knows how injured he really is during one of those moments, and clearly he wasn't yesterday.

Fraud looks pretty skiddish with only ten aces against Delpo in 3 sets (Zedbot popped in 23
, a great match). Fraud's greatest magic act if he some steals Shanghai from this Nadal.

fed had 7 aces in the match, not 1.
Fed served at 72%, he won 40 points out of 46 on 1st serve (87%) and 10 of 18 on 2nd serve (56%).
He had lost only 5 points on serve in the 1st set, 4 of which were in the game in which he was broken.
delpo didn't even get to a BP in any game after that.
What do you do while watching ? seriously ?
you can't even get the relevant stats properly either.
Fed was clearly better than Nadal in their respective SF match (by all accounts).
oh and delpo's BH was fine as well.
and finally a parting shot :
zedbot with his 23 aces managed to win 79% on first serves, federer was up ahead at 87%.

it was 7 actually. The other 3 winners on serve were service winners, making it a total of 10 winners on serve.

I'll post more in the match thread, but if you think Fed is anywhere close to early 2017 form. The fast court and some Nadal nerves might save Fed, but this could also get pretty ugly.
He is. this match was up there with his early 2017 form for sure. (the gasquet match in the previous round wasn't that great, he was still working on his BH)
there were many insane rallies in this match that fed won (apart from being dominant on serve), its major part of why delpo won only 65% points on 1st serve (48/74) and 53% on 2nd (19/36)

Just watched the games where Delpo folded for the breaks. With all the uproar you've convinced me to watch more of the replay.
Holding Delpo to 65% of first serve points won is good, but I'll have to watch closely. It takes two to tango and a player that is off will cloud things, witness Thiem v Djoko in Rome and then RG. Even an ardent fan like myself was a bit surprised by that turning of the tables. Thiem a little off in Rome gets dominated and then Djokovic falls away after locking horns for one set with the real Thiem at RG.My pick with both Del Potro and Dimitrov in his early going with Nadal is that their were too many insane rallies.
Dimitrov was way too passive on serve and low velocity in the early going of their match and then got things almost right until he blasted a bunch of ball out when broken in the 3rd set. God Potro's serve was untouchable against Zverev. I realized Fed has a way with big servers, but it seems likely to me that Delpo cooled off quite a bit on serve. I'll report back with impressions after watching and also with impressions of velocity and placement. God Potro was all over the lines with Zverev on first serve with 73% in and absolutely no let down in any games. In those break games definitely not God Potro serving, but pressure of Fed adds up so I'll watch.Update:

Yep, Meles, I agree, excelent read on where was an important point that gave Fed the edge on this match.
Somewhere in the middle of 2nd set Delpo's serve was not that efficient any more. But as you say it was due to Fed's pressure, and actually Fed began to read well Delpo's serve. And clearly Delpo felt this pressure, and made him risk more his 1st serves, that was going in less and lesser.
The fact that Delpo cooled off quite a bit on serve (quoting) is due to the fact that Fed's fast eyes began to see where Delpo's ball was going on his serve.

Well that was my guess as I've yet to watch the whole match. The timing of the SFs was just bad for me and given that Delpo questionable no way was I setting an alarm to get up for no match or total Glasspo. Will watch replay here in the next few hours. This match has gotten more and more interesting as I read this thread.
Kind of expected what happened in Miami with their match, but having to think again that Rafa will be able to turn the tables decisively.Charleneriva

I totally agree. And what was with Del Po's endless complaining and whining to the chair ump? It really was irritating and went on all second set. Fed was clearly pissed off and muttered some obscenity when Del Po kept whining.

I am relieved to say that at least physically Delpo looks capable of making a charge for WTF and he is scheduled to the hilt with tournaments the next three weeks.Finally we have a dream match this year. The Fedal encounter earlier this year at Auz was delightful, but now both look fully poised to bring an even higher level in the Shanghai final.

Hammer and tongs for a set and half until Fed broke through in a very protracted break of serve. Excellent tennis. Despite Delpo's wrist mishap didn't seem to do too much damage; his two-handed backhand looks pretty much back when he wants to use it. I'm sure he's still guarding it some of the time, but he's starting to hit winners with it down the line.
Backhand definitely on par with what he brought to take down the mighty Zedbot.
