i havent seen lopez play much but just watching the end of this soderling match and lopez gives the ball very high net clearance, that is tailormade for nadal as the head-to-head suggests, much like robrado

It seems the new coach has really helped him.

I was going to say new haircut

but then it's been a while since he's gone deep enough in a tournament for me to actually see him play...so I have no idea when he got it ¬_¬

big surprise, great result for feli

Ha ha, the *******s and Nadal haters' champion has fallen on his arse! Good riddance -- though I must admit I was looking forward to a Nadal/Soderling rematch.

I don't understand why the sudden glee from some of you. I am a Nadal fan and I want nothing more than another Soderling-Nadal meeting so that Rafa can get at least some revenge. At least I know he'll be concentrated unlike in some of the other matches during beijing and shanghai.

BTW,we saw today what Nadal should do against tall guys, serve well and slice, whether deep or short. If the serve part is tricky for Nadal,we know he can slice pretty good so I don't see why he doesn't incorporate that more into his game, especially against the behemoths of the ATP.

Soderling got beaten by a guy not even in the top 40

That's something to savor!

Congrats to Feli! When was the last time he made the semis of a masters event? It had to have been a while.

When was the last time Soderling made the semis of a Masters event. Never. In fact this is only his 3rd ever quarterfinal of a Masters event in his 6th full year on tour, ROTFL!

Djokovic already breaks early. I think this match will be another letdown for some people. Simon was playing out of his mind tennis last year which he will never duplicate again. This isnt going to be a classic lilke their 2008 ATP World finals semifinal folks.

The Djoker running roughshod over Simon... 3-0

wow, so tsonga, jmdp, soderling and cilic out before the SF on this slow surface.

del potro retired, withdraw...those other guys lost, del potro was unable to play

if you add withdrawn players that list you can add federer and murray that list too, they are out already

Obviously Del Potro's achievements have already eclipsed Davydenko's and therefore he should be rated higher, but hyping Del Potro to the sky and talking like Davydenko is **** is a knee-jerk reaction.

Federer will start to lose the matches like that against Berdych in 2010 and in the following years, it's a fact that beating him in a slam is no longer as difficult. That must not be forgotten.

But it's the same all the time, you're only as good as your last match. Even Murray is laughed at ATM even though he has way more game than DP ever will.

Yet still only 3 guys have done it in the past 4 years. (Nadal, Djokovic, JMDP)

You can hardly compare that 06 AO match, just look at the set scores when it mattered.

Federer's having a lot more close matches, eventually someone you never expect will beat Federer in a slam. Even Andreev was very close at doing that. It doesn't need to be Berdych, even a guy like Korolev could do it on a good day.

OK, you've officially lost all credibility by even bringing up the notion that a journeyman loser like Korolev would even take a set from Fed, let alone a match in a Grand Slam. Yeah, a guy that's never made it past the 2nd round of a slam has a shot vs Fed now, just because he lost in 5 to JMDP and only won 2 slams this year.

and now ljubicic during the first game of the 3rd set . . . only 20 minutes into when i started watching it, too. just couldn't get up early enough. wth is going on here???

true his case is a bit different. How far do you think jmdp will go at the AO?

Sod is not a threat to any top player. He's an average player. Yes, he had a great run at RG but usually he's just not that good at all. Personally, I'm pleased because I find the guy obnoxious, probably the most unlikable guy on tour but gamewise, he would not beat Rafa unless he plays the match of his life, which is not likely to happen very often.
Great win for Lopez, he needed 1 badly!

Well said! The hype around Sod has been much more frantic than the hype around Tsonga after AO 2008 and yet Tsonga is a better player overall than Sod.

uncle toni should design a virtual reality game for nadal to practice against cilic, ljbucic, del potro, so he can overcome them like he did tsonga/blake

Wow, arent you a big idiot!??! Not everyone peaks at 22 like Nadal, ever heard of a late-bloomer? idiot!

Insane
The ATP has to change the schedule soon...
how do you think ATP should change their schedule?Which tournaments should they say a no to?
Which fans should they disappoint? How must they make up for the financial losses? How much should they pamper top players who arent able to manage their schedules?

The speed of the court isn't helping, at this stage of the year with everyone tired the players really need a faster court were they don't have to work as hard. A slow hardcourt is the most punishing surface on the body.

Sweetie. To make even more money they could have the players play every day for 365 days!!! That would be a brilliant money making idea and no fans in all of the world would be disappointed! Look at the Shanghai attendance! No one there. It's not shown on any major networks so obviously there aren't a huge amount of fans watching these minor tournaments anyway. You can keep adding more weeks to the season to make everyone happy, but I call that codependancy!
