Shanghai SF: Juan Martin del Potro vs Rafael Nadal

H2H del Potro 3-8 Nadal

Can delpo keep up the good form in pursuit of his first Master Series title?

It would be lovely to see Del Potro win, and he certainly has the shots for it. But these days he dislikes running rather more than is compatible with a victory for him being likely. The situation isn't as bad as in his 2011 heyday of poor movement - when these two played in the Indian Wells semis that year, Del Potro's basic attitude was, in true Davenport style, that any ball landing far enough away that he would have to lift both feet off the ground to get to it was just too good. Even so, he'll be reliant on first-strike tennis, and that's unlikely to be enough.

A bit like Djokovic does when they play, eh?

Nah nothing like it. Nole has a brutal 5 setter against the big man next match Nole is played out a little.
Nadal plays a brutal 5 setter next match he is even fresher and get stronger as the match progresses.
BIG DIFFERENCE! See we can play da game tu. ;)
:???:

Juan Martin won his last match despite having fever. I hope he beats Nadal this time.

Can't Rafa just lose this one..he has already won so much this year:mad:

Nadal in 2, maybe 3.

Hopefully Delpo will win though to qualify for London, then if he could win the title he'd have a great shot at getting to number 4.

If Delpo is playing well, Nadal in 2 or 3.

Nadal will most likely win this. I hope Novak doesn't tank against Tsonga in the other semi final. 23-16 is better than 22-16.

Wrist over Knee in 2.

Wha.....? Did someone really hack into your account ?
Remember that the wrist has never been the same after suffering for years with a real injury and surgery (and was also down with a fever earlier this week). Stands no chance against the HC monster knees.

Delpo in 3 sets if Djokovic won his semi, otherwise Nadal in 3. Nadal is too afraid to play Djokovic now.

Juan Martin will beat Rafa if he is playing well, not because the latter is afraid of djokovic. Your claim is as idiotic as those who said, Fed lost to Robredo because he was afraid of Nadal. Why does Nadal even bother to show up at these events if he is afraid djokovic?

Why didn't he play AO is he wasn't afraid? Nadal likes having a mental edge over his rivals that's why. If Djokovic loses his semi Nadal will be highly motivated to win and Delpo won't win more than a set no matter what. Nadal is better than Delpo when focused.

Nah. No son of tennis god can take on the Devil himself

Rafael to win the 6th Masters of the year.

As you wish, general of ************* but tomorrow when Raphalito steps on the court, ESOG will bequeath temporarily his BH to YSOG and you will see a hybrid power.

Nadal might tank if he knows what's good for him. Another loss to Djokovic in the final and he might start to build a mental block against him again. Better to wait for a bigger event to tackle Djoko again.

Or Nadal might spank him like he did at the US Open and get himself set up to win the AO over Djoko...I guess we'll find out in the fullness of time.

Nadal will probably win in 3, although I'll be rooting for Delpo. Nadal has already won enough this year and it's about time Delpo wins a masters 1000, so I hope he keeps his run going.

yes he has :( Hopefully he is fine tomorrow. I prefer him not to play when he is sick..

I'm sure he's fine. He's not dumb enough to continue playing if he were really sick unlike Nadal, who played through the flu in Doha 2011, and ruined his AO that year.

fascinating comment by Nadal here from Shanghai....... “I like the fast courts, seriously,” he said. “A lot of people always thought that because I had a lot of success on clay that I prefer to play in a slow court on hard. But that’s something that is not true. If I am playing well, a little bit faster helps me more because I am able to win more free points with my serve.”

tells you conventional wisdom and things that get locked into people's brains aren't always true

btw, Sampras said in his book he prefered a slower hard court...wouldn't think either would be true

Here's something else that's not true: the things that players say. I remember Sampras saying he preferred slower hard courts. He may have preferred them. He wasn't better on them.

Nadal prefers a faster hard court. He always has. People who say he struggles at the WTF due to the fast court are stupid since the WTF is quite a slow court these days, even the years it is held indoors. He struggles there mostly as he is always too beat up physically by then.

Nadal prefers courts which take his spin well and where the ball bounces decently. All things being equal, faster courts actually help him because his forehand and backhand penetrate the surface well and his serve is more effective. It's harder for his opponents to defend against him.

The worst surface for Nadal is actually the slow and low bouncing courts which do not take spin well.

London O2 is a good example. Nadal's forehand does not penetrate there. It doesn't take much spin and his ball hardly jumps. Consequently he gets into trouble. Not to mention he's not good indoors and is usually beat by that time.

and it's a dead bounce
