He looked pretty focused to me. Just outplayed by a player who on his day can beat anyone.

And regarding last week, we know what Djokovic can do to him.

I'm not saying this is why he lost but it's definitely a recurring theme throughout tennis history.

Nadal is usually more dangerous ranked second imo.

Looks like I overestimated Nadal by guessing Delpo in 3. That's what months of easy draws for Nadal do I guess.

It's interesting how often top players have a small letdown after becoming #1.

You'd expect it from new #1's but even the veterans like Nadal have it.

Last year, Federer had an amazing year considering his age and only played 1 really good tournament after becoming #1. This year, Nadal has a phenomenal year but as soon as #1 is secured, he loses in Beijing and Shanghai.

The effort it takes to become #1 takes a lot out of the players. It must be hard to stay 100% focused if you have reached your goal.

Come on, Nadal is the master at spectacular choke after getting to No 1. Which other No 1s had ever lost 7 finals in a row to his main challenger?

Totally agree with you how hard it is to maintain it. Way before roger came even close to his record, Pete said the hardest of his records was the no 1 streak.

Sure. I wasn't pointing any fault, more just inferring that I wish he could find a way to sustain himself in the longer format with more consistency.

Oh and great BTW, just caught your update.

I managed to go the 2011 finals. As you can imagine, I was extremely thrilled.

Sweet, must be a great memory! How nervous were you when Federer failed to close it out in 2? :)

Well played by Delpo. Fantastic tennis from a nice guy.

Fed fans embarrass themselves again of TT. Very small lives, indeed.

Please take a look at the threads over the past three to four months...If you were rational in any way, you would see how classless and pathetic Nadal fans have been behaving.

This is just people praising DelPo for his fantastic performance today...Nothing compared to the insults and derogatory comments made towards Fed who is in the twilight of his career.

Nadal fans were/are like a bunch of vultures feeding on Fed's downfall.

My prediction came true, but never expected to be such e clear victory for Delpo. On fast surfaces or indoors, I think Delpo has the edge over Nadal. He is not troubled at all of those high bouncing balls that Rafa send upon him.

Not very actually. I dunno, it was different being there than watching on TV for me. I was just kind of taken in and blown away by the whole occasion and just enjoyed every moment while it lasted. I also caught the semi finals between Federer/Ferrer and Berdych/Tsonga.

Congrats, Incognito.

Your guy played excellent tennis from start to finish.

Thank You, Truth. Rafa has been the best player this year but even the best loses sometimes. Today Juan Martin was from another universe.

Yeah, I've never seen Juan Martin play with so much aggression from start to finish. No mental lapses at all, that's what I'm most happy about. Hopefully, he wins the final tomorrow and finally wins a masters title :)

or you underestimated Juan Martin. I saw Nadal fighting for his life in every point. He didn't tank like you said he would. Juan Martin outplayed him.

Federer gets so much hate because of these kinds of threads. I have to shake my head.

Some people on here like me are delpo fans, and I was accused of being happy just because he beat Nadal. I think this is a joke as I have been a DELPO fan for nearly 4 and half years.

Also Nadal gets hate due to his deluded fans aka MichaelNadal claiming him to have the greatest forehand of all time, which is just nonsense. He didn't even have the best forehand on the court.

Nadal fought till the end. He wanted to have one of the great W/L seasons. (even tough it would have been tainted due to Oz and Wimbledon)

The WTF is going to be so interesting. And Paris.

Do you think Nadal will try to win Paris? If I were him, I'd skip it or lose early and focus on WTF.

Winning 6 Masters 1000's in 1 year as a nice record to have, but getting a WTF win is way more important.

That, and these courts look a little quicker than many of the previous ones, which would especially be an advantage for a guy like Delpo who has the power to hurt anyone. He pushed Nadal pretty hard at IW as well, but it is a slower playing court. I don't find it a stretch to think that could be a big difference in matchups where the margin can be pretty tight. Not saying that is the only factor, as Delpo had played much tougher matches leading into the IW final, nor do I bring it up to harp on court speed, as Nadal has proven himself capable of winning anywhere. But certainly, court conditions play a factor based on who plays better in given conditions.

Nice win for the big man. Hope he can stay healthy, because he is the one guy who not only has the game, but also the mentality to challenge the top of the pecking order. Nobody is surprised when he pulls off a win like this. There is a reason for that, IMO.

I'd go for the Master's record and worry about the WTF when it is time.

The conditions in O2 are about as unfavorable to him as there is on tour. I wouldn't miss a chance at doing something none have ever done, and may never do, to focus on a tournament that he will have more shots at and that is going to be really, really hard for him to win anyway, IMO. Beside, I don't think winning Paris would hurt his chances anyway. It would give him more time on a quicker indoor setting.

I thought Rafa is not playing Paris this year. Is he going to play? I personally want him to finish No.1 than WTF. If he wins it I will be happy but I'm already proud of him how he played this year.

What an amazing match from Delpo! He fully deserved this win.

Only low point was that Rafa made a lot of strange unforced errors. Since the opening game I noticed that he wasn't on his day. But he fought. Move on :)

Just noticed they're 4-4 now on hard courts. Didn't think Del Potro had kept things so even against Nadal, though of course he's never beaten him on clay or grass.

Being a fan is exactly that: "Fanatical".
It doesn't have to make sense because you just feel about a certain player's game or follow them for whatever reason.
That is enough. I don't expect posters here to make sense, it is still the internet & being a fan of a player is everything to some.
You can argue forever about who has the best forehand, it totally depends on how you are feeling it that week and how the guys you play against can defend against it.

Bravo to Delpo, he deserves it the way he has been hitting his forehand(amongst other strokes) this week. The other players know when he is on that things will get very difficult. Whether he can do it again tomorrow with Joker is another match-up.
I hope he does because tennis needs change as much as it needs rivalries.

Losing a tennis match doesn't make Nadal a lesser player, it just means his amazing run has ended.
A really great result for the entire sport as the last guys race for the WTF.
It keeps men's tennis interesting.

Nadal does not need to win them all....Del Potro should at least get a MS1000 hopefully....he had his chances in his last two finals.

As much as I dislike Nadal....everyone bandwaggoning Delpo for hating on Nadal! Which is wrong...

I think it would be a good thing that DelPo wins tomorow, it could boost his confidence and maybe this could be a start for him contending for slams again

Del Potro has many fans. Just because one is rooting for him doesn't mean he/she is a Nadal hater.

Nadal fans should stop taking their anger out on other fans because Nadal lost. Relax.

Wow great win for Del Potro, he hasn't beaten Rafa in 4 years until now. Nadal has been playing so much lately, he needs to rest up until Basel if he even plays it. I don't think Nadal will be too discouraged about this loss, he was just simply outplayed. He'll bounce back though, always does. Hopefully Delpo can bring this game to Djokovic and get his first Masters 1000!

Congrats ******* for being saved from defeat at hands of Joker in the final.
The H2H is preserved.

I'm happy for Delpo. He's now qualified for the WTF with this win? Is that right?

I hope he wins his first Masters 1000 tomorrow. The big guy really deserves it.
Vamos Delpo!

I don't understand these pathetic trolls, can anyone explain to me what's the point of this post?
No point whatsoever unless to those with a fixation on H2Hs, which, on this board, are generally Rafa fans or Rafa haters who try to make people dislike him.

Nadal won their first 2 matches on hard, Delpo then won 3 in a row in 2009 (Miami, Canada, USO) Nadal then beat Delpo in 2011 I think (Iw or Miami) when delpo was returning from his year out and then at IW this year for a 4-3 lead.

I thought Rafa is not playing Paris this year. Is he going to play? I personally want him to finish No.1 than WTF. If he wins it I will be happy but I'm already proud of him how he played this year.

He hasn't played the last 3 years, however if he didn't play this year Djokovic could retake number 1 I think. it might depend on him winning Shanghai and he would likley be overtaken again, but why take the risk? If Nadal had an early loss or didn't play basel as well as paris and Djokovic won there, Nadal would have to do something at the WTF. There would be pressure on him and if he'soff form and has a bad group it is somewhat possible he might not do enough. It would be ridiculous but I think it's possible

Congrats to Delpo for qualifying for WTF. He's had a pretty interesting year, powering through Murray and Djoko in IW, winning 3 500 and pushing Djoko to the limit at W. He's usually very dangerous indoor, so I expect him to strike big in the remaining events this season. As for Rafa, semi is a great result considering (He needs a bit of a breather imo, not surprising after the season he's had).

I agree. After watching DelPo in Tokyo, I knew he'd beat Rafa, and picked DelPo for Shanghai. I think DelPo could possibly tear through the rest of the season, and possibly take Bercy.

Damn, Delpo came out firing in this match. Congrats to him on the win.

It's good to see him playing well, I want him in the top 4.

Great win for DelPo, he played really well on a favorable surface for him but i think he will lose the final.

Thanks :D Juan Martin was awesome today. Hope he can play like this tomorrow...

I'm with you. I got a new found respect for DelPo when I went to see him in person beat Isner atDCs Citi tournament this year. He'd suffered from the horrible weather, unlike Isner, who'd gotten blessed by the weather gods, and still managed to beat Isner after his late night match with Haas. DelPo was injured there, and still managed to start shining late in the first set forward! It was so impressive.
