Shapovalov to me looks like the most talented player ever

Not saying that he actually is... It's just that he is so incredibly relaxed and loose, during all his strokes, almost as if he was some sort of a tennis god. It's like he was born to play tennis or something. Not even Fed has that aura to my eye.

He is incredibly "dynamic" according to commentators. Which in my opinion is a buzz word for 'not sure he's good but let's pretend something's there'

Anyone with eyes should be able to tell that he has crazy, ridiculous hand/arm skills. His jumping one-handers are simply sublime.

He’s what they call “twitchy” in a good way. But for lack of a better term, he seems like a bit of an airhead.

There was a little boy with a curl
Right in the middle of his forehead
When he was good he was very very good
When he was bad he was horrid

Great but short highlights reel.
Longer one of his poor play though

Less talent than Rios, Korda and the Scud to name just 3 with more talent.
Along with 400 other random players who nobody remembered. I like Denis, but he's no ATG. He would have proven it by now had that been the case (and yes, we know Roger didn't win a slam till he was 21). Apples and oranges here.

This is an obviously superlative talent at age 19-- two years older than Denis is now. No comparison, and consider Andre's volleys were horrific as a youngster.

I think Shapovalov is a great talent. No ATG or anything, but I think the jury is out on him. With the way things are now, he might peak when he is 26-27 so time is on his side.

He reminds me of a baby Thiem who doesn't get as much topspin so he makes a ton of errors. Just like Thiem he goes for incredibly hard shots in situations where they aren't indicated.
Shapo can place the ball. Thiem just bashes and hopes "maybe this time he won't get to my rocket down the middle"

I disagree. I think it is the opposite. Thiem has added a lot of consistency to his game over the past 2 years whereas Shapovalov has been an unforced error machine since breaking out in 2017. Hopefully Shapovalov can rediscover his form, but I rate Thiem much much higher than Shapovalov as a tennis player.

I wouldn't call it "aura" just yet. But I do see Federer-level potential in him (and I don't say that lightly, no one since Fed/Safin/Djokovic has had the level of raw talent I see in Denis (IMO). Not even Tsonga or Dimitrov or any of the other highly talented players.

All the talent that this young player can possess without achievements, trophies and praise, will fall on deaf ears.
My coach used to say talent has a value of 0. The more talent you have, the more 0's you have. 000000. Hard work and practice = 1, which turns your 00000 level into 100000.

That is my point.
The "special thing" that we all have is just a small step towards success. The rest (everything you said) will determine if we can transcend ourselves.
Only few succeed, we must say it.

Dimitrov esrly on I thought displayed some monfils style athleticism with some RF level stroke production. Like v RAfa AO 2014?
I can see a similar thing going on with Shapovalov.

His backhand is ugly as hell, it’s one of the worst strokes I’ve ever seen. Plus he looks like a taller Rublev. Other than that he’s ok.

I think it’s the aspect of seeing a lefty hit a ohbh. Also, Rublev is actually taller than him. Shapo 6’-6‘ 1/2” with shoes.

I seriously thought he was less than 5”4, he looks kinda like a midget on TV.

He didn't have the same aggression and shotmaking ability. His backhand was always a liability (even more so than Federer). Shapovalov is more than that IMO.

He had me fooled when he beat Ralph (I was probably just happy that a young guy beat Ralph) and I also remember being very impressed with his win over Tsonga at USO 2017. However, looking back, I expected way more of these young guys because I didn't realize that the quality and caliber of young players had permanently gone down so far and I thought for sure that one of them was going to be the next big thing. Also, I wasn't as good at evaluating actual levels of play back then.

Yeah but there's just one problem.
It takes a little more than just talent to become a great player.

It took a while, but I'm glad you finally came to your senses. :)
Or was that some other woman here who was head over heels with Shap?
Maybe Prairie girl?

Certainly a mismatch as far as aggression is concerned but idk about shot making ability.

Lots of fun to watch. Think he can make a Tsonga like run to a Grand Slam final when tennis is back on, and if the Nadal/Djokovic are rusty after the break, might even win a slam

How you handle the pressure after your rivals study your game and what improvements in all aspects of the game you make in this development phase like the one Shapovalov is going through is what separates the very good players from the iron minded champions to leave a mark in this sport.

Which of these two options will be the route this Canadian player will take?

Eye check time; either that or Moutet is a dwarf when they shake hands after Rubles won Doha:

That hurts my eyes. How does a 6’1 guy next to somebody like 5’10/11 make them look like middle schoolers?
