He's always plays best in high energy situations. He is definitely more vulnerable when playing lower profile matches, in quiet settings. It's not that he's not serious, it's just his mental nature. That mental nature is also what helps him deliver on center court under high stress situations. It is what it is.

I believe Zverev suffered the same fate against Coric and Kyrgios too. These youngsters have the tendency to get carried away against big players and tend to fall short against lower profile matches. I've seen a lot. The goal is always to win the tournaments and it doesn't matter who stands in the way. The idea is to get past all those challenges and win the title. But of course, with Shapo this is still an early call.

He's "always best" on the basis of very few matches in the ATP?

Are you aware that he has played only a very few matches outside of challengers?

Geez, I'm not sure why this is a discussion. Like I said Sampras and Chang were both younger than Shapalov in 1989. Hence he is the youngest player to make the 4th R of USO since Sampras And Chang!
Not my discussion, not arguing with anyone. If you want to argue, argue with someone else please.

I'm not one of the people in this forum who always has to be right...

You quoted someone who said I was wrong by saying they might be right.

Not sure how I was supposed to take that. I thought you knew me well enough to know I'm pretty good with stats etc...

I know you are excellent at stats, always give you credit. I was checking the dates, could not remember.

I'm just sick of people getting ticked off about nothing. Probably nothing to do with you.

I think I have PTSD from the idiots in the Former Pros section - you know the guys who just "know" stuff because "they know it's true" and just want to fight.

I call them Grump Old Men even though I'm probably older than most of them.

You know the guys who claim that it is a fact the one old pro or another was #1 in the world at least 7 years? Or that player A, born in era X, can definitely beat player B, born in era Y?

There is one right now saying that Novak in '14-'15 would be lucky to win a set off Fed at his peak, as if we really watch tennis in an alternate universe and are reporting facts from that alternate universe.

I'M SICK TO DEATH OF THOSE MORONS, ALL OF THEM...

I guess we should check which half played first back in 1989. If the top half played first, then it would be most accurate to say that he's the youngest since Sampras, because Chang would have made the 4th round earlier than Sampras, and so Sampras would be the most recent player younger than Shapovalov to make the 4th round! ;)

I've been watching Denis for 2 years. It was the same in juniors. The same in Futures. The same in Challengers. The same in the ATP. It's just that the bar keeps getting higher.

I'm sure he's interested in the "most consecutive slams" record as well. Why not chase every record you can?
He may well have set a lot of records by the beginning of the 30's but we're engaged in conversation about this tournament. Youngest 4R, youngest SF, even youngest finalist really makes no difference. It's holding that silver trophy next Sunday...the stuff that dreams are made of:

BeatlesFan can you believe it? I'm looking at the current odds right now and Isner/Shapovalov are co-favorites to reach the final now. Holy crap.
Isner? No way! He'll never get close to a major. I am going with Denis, such fun to watch and such a game!

And major props to you! I was combing through the old posts on the Denis thread and you were there from the get go! :):)

It was well before the Denis thread was set up. I posted on the "teen" thread that there was this guy and asked @stringertom 's opinion as to his potential. I wasn't (and am still not) the most knowledgeable tennis analyst and was/am freely willing to admit that, but there was something about this young guy that seemed very good to me. Stringertom shared his perspective and then ended up having the opportunity to check Denis out in person at a tourney he was stringing at. He shared his view and he was spot on. We've been keeping close tabs on him ever since.

Ah, OK. That's different. So you see a pattern...

Yup.
I totally understand where you were coming from. There are many recent "hop on the bandwagon" posters here. I am concerned that others will over-hype the young lad. I've been trying to hold them off, but, he just keeps winning and it is tough!!

I think he's done an admirable job of keeping his head screwed on straight so far. I'm worried that it can't last for too long though. :(
