Sharapova and even year slam championship

If it wasn't for the shoulder surgery and recovery, Sharapova has not miss a win in slams in every even number year since 2004. That is crazy.

04 - Wimby
06 - USO
08 - AO
10 - <missed>
12 - FO
14 - FO

I will say 14 FO was an ugly win. Her serving is one of the worst I have seen for a final. But yet she still managed to come out on top.

Congrats Masha. That was a hell of a 10 yr run.

I hope she can win another AO - it's my favourite slam, and she has a good record down under. Would be amazing to see her win it again...

If Serena continues to lose early at the majors, sharapova could definitely win more. Serena is the only person Maria just can't seem to beat.

She will. I don't know whether Maria will beat her again,I think she can if she sorts her serve out,but no way is Serena being a threat at more than 50% of majors from here on out

But another problem is the younger players are much more physical. Masha cannot just dominate these girls with ball pace anymore. Plus her 1 dimensional baseline game is getting less effective with players who can do drop shots and net play. It will be very very difficult for her to win the next one. Not every one would make more mistakes than her or serve just as bad all the time.

Completely agree. Younger players like Bouchard, Halep, Muguruza, Tomljanovic, Keys etc, will come to dominate the WTA tour soon. More so Bouchard and Halep very soon I think and hope.

Maria's serve is awful for a woman 6'2. So many double faults and her technique doesn't look smooth at all like Serena's or Bouchard's. She looks weird serving with her back leg bending in a weird way for some reason. If she had a serve as good as Serena's, she'd have at least 8 majors by now.

Shoulder surgery does that to you.

Yep I read an article the other day where they were looking at Maria's clay game in 2004 compared to now. She was superior in everything now but the serve. They commented on how much more efficient and fluid her service motion looked back as a young 17 year old...

She now has the best record at Roland Garros of any active player.
That only says wta rg is wild open for many to take. Because there's a different champ each year and this year it happens halep had it slip thru her fingers had she serve just a little better. It was obvious that she was nervous. Maria did not show a dominating performance at all. In fact, I have not seen so many break of serve in a slam final b4.

There you go.

6 yrs ago? The new WTA young players are now serving better, hitting harder, and running better than Masha. Just look at the defense of Halep. Masha could have hit 2 to 3 winners and yet the ball is coming back. They all have seen how Rafa chases the ball on clay as a jr. Not to say they all can play the net very well. I am very surprise somebody who cannot drop shot and do net play can win RG. In fact, in 2016, when she is due for another slam, RG would be one of the hardest slam for her to get. The younger crowd out runs her on the court.

But having said that. Masha is a hell of a consistent fighter. She could not win a slam every year but when the draw is open up for her, she would take it very far. Consider she has no game to beat Serena, luck has to be on her side to win.
