Sharapova: high paid female athlete

I saw a small segment on ESPN which claimed Maria is the highest paid female athlete. With all her contracts, appearances, etc., she made $24 million last year, and it's growing.

Yuri, her father, seems to have calmed down recently, which is understandable since he's sitting on the emperor's throne. Despite her fortune, Maria says she still loves to play tennis, and actually says it's a way to get away from the distractions and pressures of life outside of tennis, imagine that (!)

Maria is sort of the combination of the Williams sisters and Kournikova-elegance and beauty, yet a ferociously talented tennis player. Maybe she's worth all the hype.

The ugly truth is that beauty is richly rewarded financially in our society. You don't see Kuznetsova getting the big endorsement deals for winning the U.S. Open do you?

Breakpoint, when I saw Kuznetsova win the US Open, I thought, just imagine having to see this girl on magazine covers and TV over and over if she becomes #1.

Just imagine if Kuznetsova had a Cher-like makeover, that would do more for her financially than winning more WTA titles. It's sad, but true, beauty is worshipped totally beyond it's instrinsic value in this culture.

Hope Sharapova is using sunscreen every day. Just imagine a wrinkly 30 year old with those screams. Ugh.

Beautiful people are more successful than ugly people. Thats how it is.
Yes, true financially and in most careers, if not in most of life. However, one's looks shouldn't have much effect on one winning Wimbledon nor the U.S. Open, if that's how you define success as a tennis player. If it did, how in the world did Serena win so many of them?

maybe kuzentsova should consider a makeover. u don't see to many 3's on the evening news. but then again navratilova and the williams have done ok. but i dont think kuznetsova is really on the same level as maria, talentwise. her recent results reflect that.

maybe maria will become tennis's first billionaire. hopefully she'll stay focused and raise the womens game to the next level.
