Sharapova scared of Serena, says her father

Michael Joyce, the former coach of Maria Sharapova, tells Tennis-Journal that the Russian's father and still occasional coach Yuri was always afraid of his daughter playing Serena Williams. Sharapova hasn't beaten Williams since 2004 and recently lost to her in the final of Madrid.

“Yuri has told me a million times that Maria can’t win a Grand Slam unless Serena loses, so I’m sure that rubs off on her,” Joyce said. “Wimbledon 2004 was kind of fluke: Serena was tight as drum. Yuri has always been afraid of Williams."

Joyce, who now coaches American teen Jessie Pegula, added that Sharapova needs to play smarter against Serena. He said one of the reasons why Sharapova doesn't try to read Serena’s tendencies is because “she’s stubborn. She has been few years and she doesn’t to like listen to anyone. It’s tough to get someone to listen when she wins 95 percent of her matches.”

Kinda bad for her old coach to out her in that way - unless he thinks it'll wake her up somehow

Joyce is free to speak his mind, but....

SHUT UP! Yes, it is no secret that Sharapova cannot read Serena, yes, she needs Serena to lose in order for her to win, and yes, she's stubborn (or perhaps its a matter of her realizing the limits of her one-dimensional game), but to air this on the eve of the French Open is just about the worst thing for a woman with a fractured tennis ego.

...worst of all, Serena is not the only player capable of defeating her (see her H2H with Azarenka).

Just a jealous parasitic guy trying to show that he is relevant by revealing embarrassing secrets now that he can do so. No wonder celebrities can't trust anyone around them. He probably gets a kick when people lap up inside details of Sharapova's camp that he feeds them.

What's the embarrassing secret I must have missed that part. It's all common knowledge.

Totally! Unless she's done something really crappy to him and he's seeking revenge, the guy is a total jerk and/or just wants attention.

I sincerely hope this doesn't add to her problems. It's more fun to watch if you think there's a chance your fave (serena) might lose. Plus, the tennis goddess needs a healthy confident sacrificial Maria or the crops will not grow.

If it is, then it would not be reported in a paper and discussed here, would it?

It is really not important how significant it is. What is significant is how low the threshold of values for this guy is. If I had private knowledge about somebody, I would never talk about it, even to others in my circle.

True.

In the second set of that Olympics final last year, Maria was trembling in front of the American Queen GOAT. I thought she was going to cry during the match

A lot of things make the papers. I don't see anything wrong with what he said he wants the best for her I think that's why he said these things not just for the money. I'm sure he would say it to Maria face to face also and probably has many times. Maria needs a wake up call before her next big match with Williams her recent tactics are always the same as her old tactics, she needs to listen to her coaches.

Sharapova has no real passion for tennis - to her it's her job.

She probably could not care less that she cannot beat Serena because she can beat 99% of the rest of the field to keep reaching finals and make her name still relevant for all her endorsements and advertising deals.

He didn't tell us anything we didn't already know.

But it's pretty loathsome and slimy to betray Maria's confidence like this.

Considering she has spoken HIGHLY of Michael numerous times since splitting, and last year said they were still good friends (good enough for Sharapova in 2008 AO to dedicate the win to Michaels mother, who has recently passed away).

WHAT A SPITEFUL, DISRESPECTFUL THING TO SAY.

Poor Maria, and Im not even a fan of hers.

Michael is bitter he is not getting any Masha Money anymore.

Or just enjoying his two minutes of fame before becoming a nobody again. Money is not the only motivation. A feeling of power over others is perhaps the thing going on here.

I think she cares. She looks pretty upset during and after the losses.

She herself admits she's stubborn. She has said that when her coach comes on the court to coach her, she ignores what he says and does what she wants. I'm sure she did the same with her old coach and it was frustrating for him, but he should just move on and quit riding on her coattails for free press (or whatever it is he's doing here).

But it is not constructive. The timing--right after two Serena victories over Sharapova--seems vindictive. There's no way Joyce's comments are going to change a hard-headed player, or one who simply knows only one way to play, considering her limitations.

At best, she will be pis*ed off by the trash talking, but she's not McEnroe--who had a remarkable inner sense to self-correct, turning anger into a new, winning strategy on the spot. That's just not her on the practice court, or during a match.

Joyce just poured lighter fluid into a well-opened wound.

True. She was making some incredible faces. She didn't believed in herself at all. Then, she keeps ******* off Serena all the time too...

It does sound like sour grapes from Michael Joyce Maria is playing much better tennis with her new coach and her results are very consistent.

But I do agree with Joyce though Maria can't over power Serena she needs a new strategy. And it is true, look at last year when Serena lost in the first round the door opened for Maria Sharapova to win the title.

That's some really rough reverse psychology.

Or just really sour grapes from an embittered former coach

She did cry during the match. Her eyes were definitely glistening on some of the changeovers

Highly doubtable.
If that was the case she could have retired a few years ago. There's no need to make her name still relevant.
Her net worth is listed at 80 million.
That's enough for her grand grand grand children to live on clover.

She simply plays too onedimensional which is of course enough to prevail on the WTA Tour considering that 95% of those girls are brainless one dimensional ballbashers or pushers retrieving the ball consistantly without a gameplan.
Serena's her nemesis. That's it.

In the following article, she claims she took her foot off the pedal when she lost to Serena in Miami, talk about delusional! "Yeah, instead of getting butchered in straight sets, like I usually do, I was up a set and a break, and then I lost the last 10 games, I HATE it when that happens!"

Took her foot off the pedal? Ohh Yeah...that sounds so realistic! :)

It's pretty weird though how a top 3 never can beat another top 3. As if Murray would never win against Fed.

That's because every member of big 4 has some unique weapon to hurt the opposition with. Murray's junkballing, Fed's serve, Nadal's FH, Djoker's return.

In Sharapova vs Serena match - it's like one dimensional ball basher facing a much much better one dimensional ball basher. This makes it pretty much impossible for Sharapova to win as her style is simple lesser version of Serena's.

It's like watching Murray vs Simon. The latter only has a chance to win if Murray plays with both arms broken.

Don't watch women's tennis then. I enjoy the current power style of women's tennis over the wooden racquet days myself.

How many different "Graf is the Greatest" type" ID's will keep appearing on this board? You aren't fooling anyone,

Too many. I believe two popped up in the past two weeks. Someone resents the talk surrounding SW's place in history (which is not threatening Graf's), so.....

Really?

"...with positive intentions here on Maria."

Let me guess. English isn't your first language. You probably aren't a Maria fan.

Misleading title.

Joyce said YURI SHARAPOV is scared of her daughter playing Serena, not that Maria is scared of Serena herself.

Are you serious??!!
She hardly held her tears at 2013 French Open final
BTW I respect that in Sharapova, that she tries in every match to compete, she didn't run away and retire tennis pretending an injury

More like Serena knew no matter how she's behind with Maria she can beat her. I think Miami broke Maria this year. Especially after the drubbing Serena gave her at the Olympics.
