If this is true, its got to be the most ridiculous marketing stunt ever. Lucrative (for her) but ridiculous.

Maria Sharapova, the richest female athlete in the world, is planning the most audacious move of her career — changing her surname to Sugarpova for the two-week duration of the US Open, in honour of her line of sweets.
The 26-year-old Russian, a former world No 1, has asked about a “quickie” name-change through the Supreme Court of Florida, where she has a base, and would revert to Sharapova after the tournament. It is understood also that the striking emblem of Sugarpova candy, a pair of red lips, will feature somewhere on her attire during the final grand slam of the year.
It is an extraordinary ruse by Sharapova and IMG, her management company, and there are no legal barriers to stop her. Sources close to the star, who split last week from her new coach, Jimmy Connors, in Cincinnati after only a single match together, say that she is willing to see whether the change can be made in time.
Sugarpova, the company, is owned by the athlete, who founded it with an estimated $500,000 of her own money. The sweets come in 15 varieties that have labels like “flirty”, “sassy” and “smitten”. It has been called “the Spice Girls of the candy world” and it is estimated that 1.8 million bags of the confection, which cost $5 a packet, were sold worldwide last year, with special emphasis on Russia, the United States and Europe. There are outlets in Selfridges stores in London, Manchester and Birmingham.
Should she be able to go through the necessary paperwork, it is understood that she may still need the permission of the grand slam committee. If it agrees, she could be introduced, addressed and have scores called out in favour of Miss Sugarpova for as long as the No 3 seed remains in the event.
The plan comes hard on the heels of the recent announcement that Sharapova, who won her breakthrough grand slam at Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 2004, has for the ninth year in succession been named as the world’s highest-paid female athlete. On top of her $6 million in earnings, her first victory at the French Open last year brought bonuses in her endorsement deals that topped out at $23 million. That put her almost $8 million ahead of the world No 1, Serena Williams.
There is a celebration tonight on Fifth Avenue, New York, of the first anniversary of the Sugarpova brand. She will unveil an accessory collection. There was no comment from IMG, but it is likely that an announcement confirming Sharapova’s move could be made at the event.

Oh man,if this is true she's gone absolute batsh** crazy. First the sacking of Connors after one match then this. A name change would cost a bit of money right? So she'd have to sell a lot of sugarpova bags to recoup those costs

I hope Maria goes out in the first round.

That oughtta be illegal. Even if the court gives her permission, the tournament should refuse to recognize it. And absolutely NO logos (lips on her attire). Are you freaking kidding me???

What is extra-stupid is that in Russian her name is pronounced sha-RAH-pova (stress on the second syllable), not -POva. She admits that she gave up trying to correct the Western media long ago. So "Sugarpova" only works as a play on what is a mangling of her actual name anyway.

It always disgusted me that she stopped pronouncing her own name correctly. When she came up with that dumb name for a company that sells poison and markets it with sex, I was even more disgusted. If this story is true about her temporary name change, I think I will boycott watching all future matches of hers.

Have a little freaking integrity.

As I noted in another thread, this just illustrates why she's in career spiral mode: outside interests/publicity stunts.

This cannot go down well if she suffers a bad defeat at the USO.

I haven't seen any other big name tennis writers comment on it so it may be a joke
+1. 'Supreme Court of Florida'? Like they're going to drop everything and fast track this - she spends more time here in So Cal - not like she spends a lot of time/money there. And there's the fact that she's a Russian citizen.

I think it's funny but yes IF she won, would the trophy be "Maria Sugarpova" as an earlier poster noted? That would be stupid

This is pathetic. She's still a good player, but like other are saying it looks like she's using her career to publicize her brand.

I mean, you really have to wonder now, was the hiring and firing of Connors a stunt? Dimitrov??? Are they actually kissing in those photos or does just look like they are? ;) Don't forget he's the heir to the Nike throne.

That aside, If the GS committee allows this, then that's really bad. That crosses the line.

Aren't you bored with just having one name for your entire life? This is a great trend and should be adopted by everyone.

Where are the ex-pros/commentators criticizing her about "outside interests" distracting her from tennis?

That's reserved for the Williams Sisters. Dogged them out. Couldn't listen to a match without hearing how they needed to focus on tennis. So far, I haven't heard a peep except to say what a mogul she is. Ridiculous.

The Williams Sisters got that criticism for outside interests due to racism. That's just reality. They were black champions in a mostly white sport, who did what they wanted to do, without being apologetic for it (and they still managed to keep winning). Some phonies like Chris Evert said they were critcicsing them out of "concern" for their careers or potential, but they just wanted to make them look bad in to the public.

Sugarpova gets away with it because she's a pretty white girl. Obviously not many pundits/ex-pros/media types in the game are overly "concerned about outside interests mesing up her tennis potential. They are simply happy to see her get richer.

Quoted for truth. Martina, Mary Jo, Shriver, Evert, Austin, Carillo, Patrick McEnroe, Drysdale and others all jumped on the Williams sisters for "outside interests" and not "taking tennis seriously," but there's absolute silence about Sharapova. Their silence explains it all.

This is clearly a spoof article worthy of The Onion, and along the lines of the Adam Levine story about Maria's intimate grunting, a satircal story that was also widely printed. From a procedural and priority standpoint, does anyone really believe that the "Supreme Court of Florida" would really address the issue of a "quickie" name change for a Russian citizen?

Maybe the Supreme Court of California will drop everything to address my parking tickets. Also, Sharapova's sponsors might not be too pleased.

I don't know how this got to Harman, or why other media outlets republished the story, but it is good free publicity for Maria's candy line.

If Sugapova was able to change her name legally for two weeks then the real problem is Floridian law.

And we all know the problems with Floridian law!

Then she has the problem of convincing the tennis authorities, so in all probability a publicity coup without further consequences.

Well played, Maria, or whoever you are.

No,they leave Maria alone because she acts with integrity - she doesn't blatantly tank tournaments like they often did,she has played a full schedule for the most part. The Williams sisters skip the best tournament on tour just because of a bit of name calling a decade ago

I wish folks could learn to scrutinize these urban myth/false stories being circulate on the internet. I don't believe this story for one minute.

It is hilarious she thinks she will even be playing tennis for 2 weeks at the U.S Open. Given her current form and the large number of players who can easily beat her on any given day right now, she will do well to last 1 whole week.

Because there can't be 2 Mashas
So if no other Russian named Maria can be called "Masha" because there can't be more than one, then obviously "Masha" is NOT a nickname for any Russian named Maria.

BTW, how can "Masha" be a shorter version of Maria when they both have 5 letters? There's a reason why "Bob" is a nickname for Robert, "Bill" is a nickname for William, "Mike" is a nickname for Michael, "Ed" is a nickname for Edward, "Joe" is a nickname for Joseph, "Ted" is a nickname for Theodore, "Fred" is a nickname for Frederick, "Ron" is a nickname for Ronald, "Al" is a nickname for "Alfred", etc.

so English is the only language that counts? and if you write Masha in English that's how you write it in Russian as well hence it can't be a nickname?
the ignorance is staggering.

You can't change name that often. And also, you'd need to have a good reason to change your name. Marketing candy does not qualify as a good reason I'm sure, although, with enough money maybe you can bribe them :)

Um..."Al" is shorter than "Alfred" whether you write it or say it. It doesn't matter how "Masha" is written in Russian, it takes as much effort to say "Masha" as it does to say "Maria". Nicknames are used mainly for the benefit of calling the person's name.

Again, why is Maria Sharapova called "Masha" while Maria Kirilenko is called "Makiri"?

And, yes, English being the only international language and the most widely used language around the world, it is the only language that counts nowadays. :)

Ahahahaha!!!! You are funny!!!

Now all of this in English:
Believe me, Masha is the nickname for Maria, nobody ever calls little girls of close friends with their full name, it's not done, if you have a friend named Maria, she is Masha, Svetlana is Sveta, Valentina is Valya.

BTW, that's why we always laugh at Russians in Hollywood movies, when they are like "Alexey, go there, Vladimir, do it". It's so formal and sounds so weird (especially when they are Russian mafia, lol, it's like you show British mafia and they say something like: Your Lordship if you please do that).

I can hardly wait for sone if the umpires to start calling out "Miss Sugarpova" and laughing and laughing.

What next? MR. FEDNIKE?

Why not? Fed likes to make money.

Aside from Li Na, I understand that Nike players aren't allowed to have other logos on their outfits. I wonder if they will let her put her "lips" logo on hers?

I'm hoping like many that she will be zapped from the tournament early...

like I said the ignorance is staggering. but if you enjoy it then please, by all means, stay ignorant.
