Some nice intermediate tennis. Both of us played well. Many well constructed and entertaining points. Look out for a no-look FH winner from my opponent!

Always great fun to play him. He has a great FH, so was targeting his BH. Unfortunately, his BH was solid today too and he took the 1st set 6-4. Pity we didn’t have time to finish the 2nd set…

Hope you enjoy this session as much as I did!

I played this older guy about 3 years ago and lost to him, he was later awarded Player of the Year for the USTA Missouri Valley in 2024, not just in senior league, just the general Men's 18+ league, he's kinda a big deal. I was determined to not let that happen again today. And luckily for my ego it didn't. Mercy was not in the cards and I redlined the whole time. Sorry about the camera angle, if you can get over that, there's some entertaining moments in here. I'm in the red shirt.

Got last weeks video done. Hope you like 'dutch angles' lol. These interior net tarps aren't ideal for hanging my QM-1 rig and sometimes this is the best I can do. match was pretty interesting though. This lefty seemed to really struggle to get a read on my serve, had at least a couple games where all I did was serve 4 balls.

Yesterday's USTA singles match. I played pretty darn well. This guy and I have similar play styles, both of us like to hit the ball hard and go for it. He's played at 4.5 before but dropped down to 4.0. There was a bit of drama here and some calls that satisfied neither of us. Don't think any maliciousness was at play but things get a bit elevated, shall we say? What do you think on the replays? Who's eyes are worse lol?
Kevin = grey shirt w/ white hat. Racket: Adidas Barricade

Usually getting bageled ain’t fun… Either I’ve self-destructed or I can’t get a racket on the ball. This was different and a first for me. An epic 82 point battle! Opponent played the ultimate grinder’s game. I could not match his shot tolerance, had a poor game at the net, and was gassed by the 4th game. Nevertheless, I thought I played decently (definitely the best among my bagels) and did well tactically (except some costly change-of-direction errors).

This was my best performance of the year, so I wanted to share it.
Ever since I learned how to really drive through the ball while still applying spin, I feel like my options in a rally have expanded significantly.
I used to prefer flat balls, but I've completely changed my mind. Spin is a fantastic option that lets you balance both offense and defense.

I like how these evening matches played as the sun sets make it seem like the match lasted all day lol. I'm in the black shirt. Oops, looks like I missed trimming the dead air out of one point. Sorry that's what you get video editing at 2am and not watching it in full before exporting. Hopefully you can forgive me.

That serve at 3:30 was in by a clear margin - w him standing right in line w the singles line and looking straight at it I'd be inclined to ask when he last had his vision checked

Baseline at 5:18 is hard to see but looks more out than in so given your position I'd give him the benefit of the doubt

Singles lines at 5:41 Clearly in - this guy def has some issues judging bounces near singles lines

Baseline at 10:34 Looks more in than out but far away and not a great angle

Good stuff - you have def improved overall since I last remember seeing one of your clips (prob well over a year ago though). Just judging by the highlights in the video you have the shots to comfortably beat that opponent. He looks most comfortable when allowed to step in slighty and hit at waist to chest height so I'd be curious how well he would deal low deep slices as well as loppy/high top spin shots to his bh.

Just some spontaneous feedback so feel free to ignore. Was this video representative of your bh at this point? Critiquing a bit here but don't mean to sound harsh - I get a little Mark (TW) feeling (exaggeration yes ;)) - watching your bh due to you not stepping in and getting your body weight behind the shot the way you obviously do on your fh w adequate foot work, leaving you forced to "arm" it a bit unnecessarily. A few small corrections could elevate your bh a lot and allow you to release it / swing out more freely. What are you feeling when hitting bhs and are working on anything technique wise atm?

Also nice seeing a Barricade in action. I've never played with one but remember examining them at an adidas flagship store when released and quite liking the design.

Yeah my backhand is a shot that I tend to hit a lot better and with more pace/confidence in practice than in league matches. I tend to play it safe and just try and use it to setup the forehand or as a defensive shot. Occasionally I can step in and do something with it but its a shot I'm trying to work on more. And yes I've fallen back in love with the barricade after half a year away. It just fits my game so well, super underrated/under-appreciated frame. Though I'm a bit miffed due to a certain youtube video, now people are buying them as collectors items, and now I'm having trouble finding another. I paid 40 bucks for mine 5 years ago, now I can't find one for under 100.

New match against a guy I'd never played in USTA before. He definitely had issues with the pace I was generating. I was steam rolling through the 2nd set: broke at love to start, held at love, broke at love again, and held at love again, before my Golden Set hopes ended in game 5 on a really, really close call ball. Got 67% of the way through the set though, definitely the closest I've ever gotten.

That guy is definitely self-taught. His forehand and serve are painful even just watching.

Playing Japan’s #1 Ranked 35+ Player on a Natural Grass Court!
Natural grass courts are extremely rare in Japan, and my opponent was incredibly strong. It was truly an amazing experience!
You put a lot of care and attention into your editing! Probably why you play so respectably too! I wish us English-only speakers could see what you write in the pop ups

Thanks for watching! I actually tried adding English subtitles before, but it was so much work that I couldn't keep it up...
But receiving a supportive comment like yours really motivates me to find a more efficient way to do it and try again!
Thank you for the encouragement!

Not sure how/why the USTA missed bumping you up ...

First match of the new year and it’s against an opponent I’ve played a few times now. I think I’m getting more patient or maybe his play style brings out the rally side of my game. A bit of a slow start as I was still nursing a shoulder injury but it warms up eventually.

I’m in black

Racket: Stiga Arena

Whoa, haven't seen anyone actually use one of these. What's your thoughts on it?

I made a whole thread about it in the Racquets section, but in short I think it's excellent. It's a wide yet thin box beam throat, quite plush feeling and well controlled. Feels like a more forgiving Prestige, which I think is what they were after. I put spin friendly poly tour rev in it at 52 lbs, and I think it sings. There's moments of great touch, and power. I think my favorite shot on the day came at 16:40 where I felt like Federer running around a backhand and hitting a winner down the line lol.

This might be the last USTA match I play for a while. My shoulder's not feeling much better, literally feel it on every single serve but I played today anyways because we were already forfeiting #2 singles and I want to be a team player. I did manage to win and most ground strokes were unaffected. I do go all out on the serve on match point though..
I'm in yellow, still using the Stiga Arena racket.

This opponent certainly does things his own way.

sorry to hear this, hopefully it is something that is that can be figured out and healed.

Long time lurker, 1st time poster on the TW forum.
