No, and I don't know why not. I did start setting up closer to the T when I saw the serve had less pace, and I know I always make a conscious effort to run around my backhands to hit forehands whenever possible (definitely something to work on), so to force me to hit a backhand would have meant they had to serve from closer to the T, and down the T since I'm taking at least 80% of the box as a forehand even though I realize this pushes me out of position a bit.
Ooh, saw one underhand serve to your BH in part 3.
Your first serve is pretty good, but your second serve could use some work. With your height you should be able to spin it in deep without any problem.

I wish my camera worked for the other matches, but I have my first match from SCTA 3.5 Men's Doubles sectionals here. I'm the tall guy in all blue.

SCTA Mens 3.5 Doubles championship

My best winner of the match (but by no means a smart shot from a strategic point of view):

What software do you use to edit your videos down? I tried using iMovie but it seems like a real pain to cut out the middle segments between points on it.

Someone told me they use Adobe.
Editing videos is gonna be a pain in the butt no matter what application you use. Once I find out how to add score I will share it here

Tito, I use Adobe Premiere - I'll put it on my list to make a video to show people how I edit the score in. Kind of annoying/time consuming but I haven't found a better way yet. Takes me about an hour to get the dead space out / score edited in, and then another hour or two to pick the points to be shown, adjust color/zoom, tinker with point length and add comments. 2-3 hours for a video isn't too bad if you split it up into 2-3 sessions. Otherwise gets super boring.

Here's the video I posted today:

Slice BH needs work... It looks like you're trying to put a lot of sidespin and/or underspin on it and as a result you're swinging waaay too fast. Slow it down and go for more of a "push" than a "chop."

Thanks a lot! Mentally I think the ball is coming faster than it really is and I cut myself short on time

The white has no idea how to hit a forehand does he? It’s punch and run to the net which is pretty easy to defeat with placement. Nice to see blue start to do that

I am the one in the blue. I suck at the net and needs to start to serve and volley to get used to it. I am still working on control

You don't need to serve and volley to learn volleying.

It's the other way around, learn put away volleys first; after that you can learn halfvolleys and no-man's-land volleys, serve and volley is ""advanced""

Serve and volley is "advanced" against players that cant aim (read learned to play tennis on youtube). You have three options, hit it to the feet, the body/face, preferrably dominate side of chest, or pass it which you can do with even a block, close your stance if you have to in order to get it down the line. I prefer a ripping it above the waist directly at the charging player then passing down the line on the next unless i am really on my game which if so I'm going to pepper the upper torso and head on the dominate side, its not my fault you can't hit a ground stroke. I will make you duck multiple times if you serve and volley me.

What I didnt make clear was you seemed to be aiming more and making him miss.

I think you misunderstood. I mean to say that if your volleying is bad, playing serve and volley is not the way to learn. Try to drill regular volleys first.

That's like telling someone who has never hit a forehand to use lag.

Like the guy he is playing against LOL!

He's def 4.0, recently won a 4.0 tournament where we played and killed me 6-1. The pressure from his net game is crazy! Forehand is a work in progress for him but always improving.

Not to be a Dink but 4.0 Has dependable strokes, including directional control and depth on both forehand and backhand sides on moderate shots, plus the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys with some success. Occasionally forces errors when serving and teamwork in doubles is evident. Rallies may be lost due to impatience.

This dude has zero forehand.

Beating someone that can't beat a one dimensional game doesn't make them a 4.0 in the sense of the rating. I'd recommend one of the 3 options, drop it at his feet, pound it at his face or pass him. Or the 4th harder option is looping topspin

Those are just USTA guidelines, giving you a very general idea of what each level is supposed to be. If their results in competition place them at 4.0 (eg: they are competitive with other 4.0 players), then what their game actually looks like is irrelevant. It's not like 4.0s are highly advanced players anyway. The guy with the 360 spin forehand grip serve was a 4.0.

Not a match but recorded a few serves- headphones in for those curious. The camera added a ton of weight. Like easily 30lbs. Haha.

On topic. I have been working on changing my stance, at pinpoint I wasn’t as consistent. Balance was often off, I also would foot fault and my serve would vanish often for entire games. Platform feels more stable. Still feels clumsy and I feel I have lost some MPHs on my serve but I’ll get that back with reps.

I’m curious your feedback....

I notice all the bigger serve at my club use pinpoint stance. For me I notice that if I leave my tossing arm up a little longer my serve will go more consistently. Try it with your old servekng motion and see if that helps.

USTA 3.5 40+ line 3. I'm in all dark.

First go around serving I'm using pinpoint (2:26). 2nd go around I'm trying platform (8:26).
Still haven't figured out which one I like more :\
The bald gentleman has the best service motion on second serves. You think a big serve is coming and then BAM! he taps it over the net

I've never used a platform "motion", and it looks uncomfortable to me. However, I was always taught to use a pinpoint style. You can have success either way, but there are enough differences that I'd recommend to pick one and stick with it. I would agree with the observation that the better serving USTA guys I come across more often use pinpoint, but that's likely due to distribution overall. I don't see a lot of people using a true no-motion platform.

That shouldn't be able to happen with pinpoint. Is your front foot moving forward, or are you bringing the back so far up it hits the line?

One thing I've noticed with a lot of online videos is they have the server line their feet up differently than I was taught. Basically if you drew a line across the front of my shoes it would point in the general direction I'm serving. Does that make sense?

Long time lurker, first time poster! I have been teaching myself how to play this game since August of 2017, and the process has been long and strenuous. Thank goodness for Youtube and all of the awesome tennis content out there! I appreciate any insight/advice that you guys might have. This is fun match I played with my Uncle-In-Law. He used to captain his HS tennis team. Im the player in black.

Not bad considering how long you have been playing. Your strokes are pretty smooth, rarely overhitting the ball.
Your opponent foot-faults on just about every serve!

Thanks for the feedback! I notice I tend to arm my stroked rather than using my hips. Something I am trying to work on is to work on the rotation of the hips on my FH.

Matt edited the video and uploaded it earlier today. Lots of short points with 10:30 probably being the longest lol

I might join his team out in the bay area so hopefully we'll get some good doubles footage in the future. Singles is fun, but hard lol

Doubles for life!

Score: 7-6 with Matt victorious in the tie break. We also played a 10 pointer where he won 10-8.

My favorite point is at 15:20 :D Matt also hit a ridiculous forehand break point down at 15:50

Cool video! First time I see Matt with long hair . From The Novak Djokovic of TTW to The Björn Borg of TTW.

A lot of the 3.5 at my club is a lot more consistent than me and has a weapon ( forehand/backhand/serve) I don’t think I have a weapon I can count on.
Thanks I will try to use my leg more on my serve!

Second what he said about the legs. You look like a really solid 3.0 to me, and you have a great foundation for a solid serve. Thrusting up and out more on your kicker and really trying to get more of the ball and create more power/spin (at least on the first) will make your serve a good weapon for you at this level, and probably get you to 3.5 with how your strokes are now in my opinion. 3.0-4.0 the things that tend to separate players (at least from what I've seen) is the serve (especially having a real second serve and not a cupcake), and the backhand reliability.

I really think my serve is holding me back from moving up.

Staying this summer in Moscow. Played my first official match today on Rus Tennis Tour.
Lost 0-6, 5-7. Sunburned , dusty but happy ))
Very windy, dry conditions. Balls flying, lots of bad bounces, everything that is not top spin sails out.
In the first set could not hit cleanly because of the wind even om my own service toss )).
In the second set started tossing on serve low and like 5ft inside the court just to land that damn ball as soon as possible. Also moved inside the court on all points.
The wind blew off my phone a few times so in the video all points in the second set from 2-4 to 5-7.

I am red shorts.

You should build a cheap camera hook to record. I have it on my channel somewhere

I have a small tripod. But that was sort of illegal. They usually don't allow filming matches because starting from semifinals they have them filmed "oficially".
So I just asked my opponent and quietly put the phone on the bench.

I don’t see what’s the big deal because your giving away more of your own game if someone wants to use it against you

I guess they just follow ITF guidelines because all of RTT matches are ITF sanctioned. One funny thing is that they hav a strict code regarding size of the logos on the outfit. I played a couple if times cat. 2. tournaments and my opponents were not allow even to warm up in Adidas pants with wide stripes. Another guy had a fairly large russian coat of arms on his hoody. Also banned )). I ended up with ordering “no logo” shirts an hats from TW

I will try filming and sharing my matches. I hope I will play 5-7 tournaments in th coming months.
Some guys are really strong. like around #100 national. Will be fun to watch ))

Thanks for the link.
I do have a velcro strip for attaching my phone to the fence.
There is a bit of a problem with courts in Moscow. The run-back is about 10ft on all courts, even outdoors . With a typical phone camera you don't have enough angle to cover the entire baseline. In the US all courts are built to the ITF specs ( 18ft minimum behind the base line ).
I just ordered a wide angle attachment lens to my iphone that would double the view angle. Will try it in a few days.

I highly recommend using this fence mount for filming

Not a lot of long points in this one, but it was a really close nail biter. The serve at "3:48" is one of the biggest ones I've seen at 4.0
