Had a match against one of our teammates. He is one of the MEP style, "just-one-more-ball" players that while unorthodox, is a consistent and tough. Wicked fast and gets to everything! He normally plays our S2 line and I am picking that up this evening actually, so was great practice.

Overall practice in this match was trying to have more aggressive neutral balls to keep him pushed back and off balance, but that requires a little more hitting outside my normal comfort zone. And where normally I am really good with volleys, the pressure from trying to finish a point there caused a lot more than usual errors there - just trying to do too much. First set was a LONG hour and 15 minutes of grind and he took the set TB 10/8 or 9/7. Second set I tried to be more aggressive, but that was even more error prone in points (usually would get a decent set up, but muff the put-away).

Serve and strokes felt good, and footwork/movement was good. Things I still am working on are fitness (of course) and ball variation (you will see a decent mix of flat and arched balls, slice, and such).

Oh, tried shooting 4k in HDR. Like the dynamic range, but next time would probably add some contrast and saturation. Dang clear though. (shot with my iPhone 12Max). And couldn't get the higher view I like, so this is on a tripod only 5 foot high, which misses a lot on the other side of the net to me.

"Oh sugars"! Ahaha, that's funny, I'm going to say that sometime. Love that one handed backhand, looks smooth. Your teammate I can see being a good S2, but I would be mesmerized playing him the way he holds the racket after he hits, it's like some dangling appendage it is just interesting isn't it? Now, back to more zoom meetings.

lol. I do have my moments, but working with kids and young adults often we TRY to keep it clean. My wife's phrase is, "Awe Mother Father!". :p

Thank you.

Everything about him is kinda disarming. The first time you might play him, you would be warming up or watching him, and think you were going to roll through. But his on court wiliness has him solidly at a mid 4.0. And it is all on the opponent to win or lose really. His lowest rated player he played this season so far at S2 is 3.81, which he lost handily, but then split sets with 3.9 and 4.0, and had then got rolled by a 3.85. All around the same rated opponents, but you know when playing someone of his style, people either match up well or just hate it. lol. I do "ok" and can split sets, but right know he ultimately gets me on the fitness side, usually in the end of that second set. He is a great workout for me.

Thanks for checking it out.

How much time does it take you to trim the video down to this length? I am interested in shooting more matchplay, I have the mount and all, but I'm not sure how much time I'm willing to invest in cleaning video.

How old is your teammate? If he is not that old then barring injury, he should be able to retain or improve his speed for some time.

He has the potential to improve a lot because he has gotten to where he is level-wise purely on his speed. I'm guessing he is faster than most people he plays against. He has really suboptimal tennis strokes and sort of random footwork to get to the ball. With some lessons and focused practice he could improve A LOT.

Cutting it down isn't too bad. I did a video on using keyboard shortcuts to blade or cut and then remove the waling/talking stuff, butit will depend on your editor.

I actually can cut this right on my iPhone, though this one I used and editor. Took me probably about 1.5 hours to cut it and then go through and find clips that kinda represented the overall match.

For sure, he is wicked fast and you can outright see it pressured me and caused more errors trying to hit shots he couldn't get to than I care to think about. He shot pace/height/weight never are the issue and he creatively could improve that a lot. But overall, with a family and a bunch of kids, I think he is happy and competes well at our level, so not sure that is important for him at this point. We talk about all that though.

interesting, thanks! I think my personal preference would be to buy swingvision pro and use that instead of taking the time to cut video; im maybe too lazy.

Have you tried that app?

Couple of tips to help you improve:
1. Hit all your BHs like the one at 55 secs.
2. Hit all your FHs like the one at 65 secs.
You're welcome!

Unless I was misjudging your earlier play, it looks like you improved a ton! I think playing at the higher 4.0 level has markedly improved your tennis. Everything is looking solid with perhaps volleys being the weakest link. But you had mentioned that in the post. Great stuff! It is fun to watch you improve your game. I hope you continue to stay healthy and keep at it.

Your opponent plays like me but is just better at it than I am. He is also skinnier so he can change directions quicker. I need to work on that. I will rush in one direction and I feel like I am trying to put a train in reverse to get back in position.

I tried it when it first came out, which was buggy at best. I see a lot of folks using it though and seems to be quick enough. I could do the same start/stop of my iPhone video for each point using my Apple watch but I find that interrupts the match way too much compared to just cutting it after. I think there was a recent app out somewhere that actaully automatically cut matches, though I can't remember where I saw it. Might only be in beta testing or such.

Thanks. Yeah, I definitely have been getting my chops back and I think it is directly realted to getting back to playing 4.0 and being able to practice with some much higher quality players as well. I've posted often that at best I was a 50/50 4.0 player, but that was 5+ years back of muddling down for vairous reasons. I think I am about there anymore.

And, oh the irony of my volley work in this match since what I do best anymore, since only playing dubs (D1 and D2) is volley! But my teammate really does get to about everything so I felt so much more pressure to make amazing shots and not have to play things out further. Need to change that mindset and some of that will come just as fitness continues to improve.

Your opponent plays like me but is just better at it than I am. He is also skinnier so he can change directions quicker. I need to work on that. I will rush in one direction and I feel like I am trying to put a train in reverse to get back in position.

His ability to switch direction is another thing that really throws me off. You will see in points I try to wrong foot him, hit behind, fake drop volley and push deep...all of that thinking and trying to get him off balance and extract an error usally causes me to error over affecting him. He has such great movement.

Thanks for watching and the comments @Moon Shooter !

Can you imagine!

But really, I felt good and hit a lot of quality shots through the match, including running some great serve +1 type patterns that I had been struggling with. Just need more consistency and confidence to continue to apply them throughout the match.

Cheers. Thanks!

If you don't need to do anything fancy, you can do all of your slicing and dicing within YouTube.

I completely agree here. I don't watch too many of your videos but I noticed the improvement right away, notably, your BH and footwork for it look much smoother. Also love your serves. They're so consistent.

I would have lost to your teammate hands down. Way to hang in there!

Swingvision does automatically cut the video for you with AI, without doing the 'start/stop' feature.

I use swingvision and it does cut to points. I think whatever setting I have it will cut first serve faults though. One match it seemed to cut the points and only had the in between points! I am not sure what happened here:

Fast forward to about 17 minutes. I did not record that match it was recorded on my opponents phone so I am not sure if she had the same issue. But that was the only time I saw that.

In my experience it gets enough and does it automatically that I am not going to complain. The stats are very helpful as well. Is my serve getting faster? How many first serves in? How many slice back hands in cross court etc etc. The MPH is off it measures average mph instead of the fastest mph like the radar guns in pro matches. Plus I think it just measures the distance on the ground of where the ball hits and where your racket hits - so lobby balls are going faster than it says they are. It does get other errors on mph as well. But in terms of whether this flat serve is faster than this other one it is pretty good but far from perfect.

If I am doing some short clips I love this feature. Problem is with a whole match video, especially at 4k resolution, you talking like 40Gb of raw files. Even cut down it was 7Gb to upload. I know Swingvision shoot in HD, but I don't think it does 4k, probably for that size and processing power needed for those files.

I still can’t believe you’re still a 3.5. You do such good job of being patient and waiting for the ball to get into your strike zone.

It always looks so easy to do on video. But I always feel like the ball is moving so much faster than it really is.

Thanks for the comments. Shot video of some of our dubs from last night and as quick as the ponts happen in real life, it is SOOOO slow looking on video! I should post some, it looks like we are 80+ moving like geriatrics!

As far as rating, there was some baggage, but that has been getting resolved. Current dynamic is back to 4.0. It has been 5 year now to get back to being a 50/50 4.0 as far as current season stats. But like I have said, 3.5 is a god dang albatross weighing players down. We will see next season. but 4/4 for 4.0 this season so far.

You are playing good in this video, you are definitely much better than your opponent but a guy like that can still give you problems with his court coverage.

Full 4.0 doubles set. Very competitive with lots of good points. I know there is a glare, my camera lens is cracked, I'll be replacing it tomorrow. I'm in the black and gold.

Looks fun! You have a big serve! I think everyone had great groundstrokes all around, volleys not so much :)

I’m the guy in green. Played pretty well. Took the match 6/2, 6/3. Still need to work on improving my slices so they’re less passive. That and my volley anticipation is still poor.

You are definitely a better player than me, and you have great consistency and solid play. But I noticed later in the match your top spin ground strokes often landed shallow bouncing around the service line. I am not sure if that was on purpose, but it seemed to allow your opponent to go on the offensive. It might be good just to practice hitting a bit deeper into the court.

Typically takes me an hour and a half to 2 hours in adobe premiere. I have to watch the whole match again, and chop out all the downtime manually, while at the same time, deciding if the point is ‘interesting’ enough to count as a highlight.

Finally got a previous team member back on court to start knocking the rust off and jump back in this upcoming fall. Only his second time back out, but was starting to get his serve pace up, and hit those heavy balls he is known for. Just a few of the points from practice because it was mostly a big serve-fest, with tons of serve +1 as well, but grabbed a few shots to string together to share. Cheers all.

Just uploaded so doubt it is full 4k yet, but should process soon.

Played an open tournament this weekend. My partner and I started off really slow and tentative as we have never played together. I have never competed at such a high level before (I am usta 4.5). Our opponents were the head coach of Georgetown and his partner from college. It was fun and I am glad I was able to play against such high level players.

Sort of a contrast to Doggo's posts with two top end 3.5 players (3.4 TR players), the match below is between me (balding and heavier guy) (2.97 TR) and a (3.03 TR) player (green shirt).

Match starts at 15:18

Thanks creighton. Im trying. But I was originally thinking I would gradually improve different aspects of my game. But instead I find I work on one aspect then the rest of my game falls apart. I do feel like my game has improved over the last 9 months even if my rating doesn’t show it. I’m going to try to get some coaching on my net game and serve mechanics.

if anyone else sees some glaring issues a coach can help with I will add that to the list.
