Shelton is the real Number 3

SinnerEra

Rookie
Mr. Shelton has now built himself into the true world number 3. In the last few slams, he's only lost to Alcaraz/ Sinner is thelast slam but excels when slams are played outside of the usual suspects... Above all, he's improved a lot in the last year, despite still having a hard time understanding the best tactical moments.
I'm absolutely sure that Ben will humiliate the German/Russian Zverev.
What separates Shelton from Sinner and Alcaraz are only very small mentality details in important points and a greater impact and heaviness in Shelton's overly rambling forehand.

The likes of Shelton and Draper will be regular top 5-10 players over the next 5 years, but Shelton isn't a real or clear number 3 right now.

He's avoiding this thread like the plague, and instead, spewing bad grammar in one of his other troll threads.

Hold the phone guys (pun semi-intended), let's wait until USO.

One bad performance doesn't take away from the fact that Shelton has been rising the ranks. Let's see if he learns from yesterday's performance and comes back stronger at USO. I'd still give him a better chance than Zverev there, unless Sascha pulls something ridiculous off in the next 2 days here.

This.

cincy in 90F and high humidity is not the most predictive of conditions.

Shelton lost to champion Sinner at the Australian Open, champion Alcaraz at Roland Garros, champion Sinner at Wimbledon, won Canada, and made the QF of Cincinnati.

A solid argument can still be made that he's the real #3.

Also, it seemed like half of his problem against Zverev was poor tactics.

His loopier high bouncing balls were in zverev’s strike zone. Gotta practice the slice.

Looks like the real #3 will finish the year no higher than the actual #8. (He is currently #8, will be mathematically eliminated this evening if, as expected, Sinner beats Zverev, and his only chance of accruing further points this year would thus be by beating Sinner). Indeed, if De Minaur were to beat Fritz, the real #3 would finish the actual #9, unless he beats Sinner.

Shelton is not better than Draper and Fils when they are fit

Mr. Shelton is a servebot who has troubles rallying which is why he may not be "the true world number 3". Players of his skill can make good top ten players but not top 3 without being able to sustain good quality groundstrokes. FAA has just demonstrated exactly that today and even said that once the rallies off Mr. Shelton's service began, the Canadian felt more confident to win them. Zverev can sustain rallies which is why he's been in top 3. When Djoker goes, Mr. Fritz may fill in more likely than Mr. Shelton. You know you might have been right during a brief moment of Andy Roddick era when players like him didn't have to have great quality backhands then. But not today. That's my professional opinion.

Shelton has to make improvement and has to beat Sinneraz multiple times to be worthy of no 3 rank.
If he manages to reach #3 without beating top 2 players he will be no better than the person who is #3 now

Didn't Sinner just easily beat FAA?
:sneaky:
Yeah but Felix is the player most likely to beat Sinner, other than Alcaraz.
Felix is able to stay in the sets until late (in 3 of their last 4 sets), so he's closer to winning than everyone else (other than Alcaraz).
Plus even though Felix's wins over Sinner were before "Peak Sinner" they still help Felix mentally, and Felix's game is actually similar to Sinner's (power and agility).

Well I don't trust Dimitrov to win anything, he is one of the ultimate mental midgets of recent years, so no matter how close Dimitrov gets I don't expect him to beat Sinner.
And I just don't know enough about Bublik/Griekspoor, so I won't make any assumptions about their abilities to beat Sinner (though I know Bublik beat Sinner at Halle, and I didn't see the Sinner-Griekspoor match in which Sinner retired so can't comment on that).
Felix I know well enough, he's not a mental midget, and he's got the tools to beat Sinner, and he's able to hold serve for long periods so he'll get chances to win sets vs. Sinner.

Lets give a little reality check about FAA vs Sinner.

They have played four times this year, FAA has lost all four of them. He is basically a pigeon this year for Sinner, the same way Zverev became one, and Shelton already is.

They have played 10 sets this year, and FAA has won a grand total of one set, and lost nine sets.

FAA is not even close to challenging Sinner, let alone beat him. Playing him a close a set here and there isn't enough, other players can do that also. And wait until we get back outdoors.
