Shoes with great Heel Cushioning?

Wonder why heel specifically is so susceptible to injury in tennis - is it the way we lunge in a big step, or stop in a big last step, or track a ball not knowing how big the last step must be until taking it???

Always with the heel.

Anyway slammed down my right heel on the weekend, heard that bone-on-court sound, thumped my heel through Asics shoe (clay court version which has less padding, doh didn't know), less padding but more breathability than my Barricades (which are tanks).

(Someone make miniature tanks for shoes, I will wear em!)

So will have to persist with barricades no matter how hot Aus gets...

Maybe Sole Court Boost with their greater stack height?

After trying 4 pairs of shoes (Asics Solution Speed FF, New Balance 996v3, Adidas Ubersonic 3), the best shoes so far are the Asics Gel Court FF, although the 12.0 seems a bit large so I'm going to try them in an 11.5.

I would also like to try a couple of the following shoes that I haven't tried before:
- Wilson Rush Pro 2.5
- Adidas Barricade 2018 Boost
- New Balance MC 1296v2 D (tried the 996v3 and there was a pain on my right foot right in front of my ankle...like the string or eyelet was pushing into it, leaving a deep impression in my foot, when I used the runner's loop stringing I have to use)
- New Balance MC 896v2 D

So which two of those would offer me great heel cushioning with stability and a feel similar to the old Asics Speed 2 shoes I loved so much?

Thanks.

The Court FF’s are awesome. I had massive problems with my left achilles that began when I was wearing Barricades and got even worse when I switched to Resolutions. Ubersonic 2’s were better, but the FF’s are the best thing I’ve put on my foot since the pain began. My feet are somewhat narrow and flat. Oh, and if you go with the FF’s, you’ll want to order a half size small.

After trying out the following shoes around the house (T22 Lite on court):

- Asics Solution Speed FF
- New Balance MC 996v3
- Asics Gel Court FF
- New Balance MC 1296v2
- Adidas Adizero Ubersonic 3
- Adidas Barricade 2018 Boost
- Prince T22 Lite

the Asics Gel Court FF is definitely the most comfortable and allows me to use my runner's loop to secure my heel in. Still trying to decide whether to go with the 11.5 or the 12.0 and the only thing I don't care for is the thinner laces (but they don't seem to 'cut' into my foot or ankle like other thin laces have).

My Court FFs are longer than my Nike Vapors, even though they are 1/2 size smaller. And they have more room in the toe box while totally locking in my heel. I almost went with the larger size because they both feel good on, but I’m very happy that I went down 1/2.
For what it’s worth, I’ve also tried on the various basketball shoes that people rave about and none of them feel as cushioned as the FFs.

If you need more heel cushioning than the T22, you might have to try a basketball shoe. The Adidas Crazylight Boost 2018 and the Harden Vol 2 have a lot of Boost cushioning.

I'm beginning to wonder "how bad" these T22 shoes really are. I didn't have any problems with them on clay but when I went to hard courts I started having right heel problems...wondering if it's the shoes or the fact I hadn't played on hard courts for quite a while before my right heel started giving me problems. I've been wearing them about every day lately (although it's been too wet or too cold to play tennis) while wearing a "plantar faciitis sock" and haven't had any pain at all. Hopefully I'll have a chance to get on the court with them soon to see how they do.

Thanks for all the input.

T22 shoes. I didn't have any problems with them on clay but when I went to hard courts I started having right heel problems...

I would go so far as to say you cannot wear a clay version of a shoe on hardcourt. I tried recently with some Asics. No way in the world was the clay sole up to the task on hardcourt. The sole compound for clay is simply not protective enough on hardcourt. So if your T22 felt fine for clay then expect it to be unsuitable for hardcourt.

And since this thread is about heel cushioning, the clay Asics on hardcourt specifically allowed jarring through the heel - noticeably. When leap or lunge the heel just did not cushion the blow.

ZOOM ZEROS are among the best cushioned shoes I have ever worn in 40 years of tennis shoes. At the same time they don’t feel high off the ground and they’re extremely stable. A great shoe.

The boost material in the SoleCourt appears to pretty nifty(!) so far.

I haven't had a chance on hardcourt, but the plushness and bounce, specifically under the fore-foot, feel unlike anything I've tried before.

Adidas Barricades-thru-now-SoleCourt have always had significant extra heel cushion such that the heel sticks out. I was wondering if the Boost material while soft underfoot would yet still provide strength in that extra heel sticking-out bit. So far so good but I reckon it won't have the tank-durability of the Barras. Have to try on hc.

All this talk earlier in the thread about Achilles tendon support (or lack thereof) has me worried about continuing to use the Resolution 7's! I'm just now coming back to tennis from a full Achilles rupture last year and want the best shoes to protect against reinjury. The Court FF looks like a good choice, but I'd like to hear some more good options as well.

There are gel-filled compression braces that cushion the achilles and/or heel.

When I go out for the Novak squash shot...I plant and slide, but my heel feels like it goes through the bottom of the shoe. Hurts like a B-word. I played with Barricades for 12 years...but of course my movement has only gotten MUCH better since I lost 45lbs and started hitting the gym...and now I use the Speed 3 from ASICS. Is there anything that can allow sliding and have traction when I need it but have better heel protection? Thanks guys and girls.

Where buy? Brands? Gonna look for these!
Really not finding the heel support I need in the sole court boost, in fact just pinged my Achilles where it attaches to the heel... Again! Sharp pain had to stop comp play ugh Back to braces plus heel gel cushion?

Whoa possum-pain. This is exactly why there is this thread. Peculiar to tennis movement there is often lunge steps which jam the heel down hard. You see in most good tennis shoes extraordinary heel protection therefore. Am not quite getting heel protection from boost foam, just bit too soft or not enough of it in the solecourt?

Big change from barricades to speed3 so think u go back to barras? Have always found them good cushioning. Not fast enough?

Secret is to put in an insole with a firm heel cup like a Superfeet or Birken Contact. The heel cup will raise and control the heel so that the Achilles isn't stressed. Cushioning is not the answer to heel pain. Cushioning helps with knee and back pain.

I may go back to the Barricades...I liked the Speed 3 for lightweight and price! I have been working out getting stronger and faster like I said before, so the Barricades may be my next purchase. Thanks.

Woah many thax That is a very significant distinction to make. I get both so will pursue both!
just sustained Achilles injury - will try heel cup, best advice in these forums!
