Shorter shorts for men

When I’m looking back on tennis apparel for men, I really miss the shorter length shorts for men. It just plain looks more sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing to the entire outfit and design.
Now that being said there is a limit for me .. I like the look of tennis shorts to be more or less the same length as modern running shorts . So about 2-3 inches above the knee. I am not saying crazy short , but shorter than want hardly any other manufacturers make besides fila santoro short , which is made of some of the worst material I’ve ever encountered. The material feels incredibly similar to a paper towel .
Another problem I have with the longer shorts these days Is the majority of them go past my knees . I hate that . I hate the way it feels when bending my knees to have the material “ catch “ on my skin . Plus it looks sloppy man ..but all n all it really just looks cooler to me for some reason to have the shorts above the kneee and to wear crew socks not pulled all the way up like dorky , but pulled up and then pushed down a bit. ( oh it’s an entire process y’all )..

I swear, the shorts that go below the knees only happened because of Nadal. I agree with it being 2-3 inches above the knee as well

-ive been looking at soccer shorts for this reasons, but find that they dont have side pockets, so its no good either!
-running shorts (i looked at), are a bit small,
-basketball shorts are tooo long
-maybe somewhere in the middle, slightly above the knees, with side pockets is what i would like

Lululemon offers 7” shorts and Hill City offers 6” shorts. Nike Nadal shorts are now pretty short as well.

You know you can search for shorts based on inseam length in the TW apparel section? There are actually a lot of 7” and under. Right now, there are 23 different shorts with 7” and 5 that are 6” or 5”.
as stated above, most of them go up in length above med by either 0.5cm or 1.0 cm per size.

Well unless you’re wider than you are tall, that should remain proportional. If you’re 6’5” and wear an XL short, it should look the same as a L on someone who is 6’0.

If you’re 5’5” and wear an XXL... I’m not sure there’s a lot you can do.

cycling jerseys have pockets on the back, just right for tennis balls. That way, you can wear any shorts you like. Also, you'll never have that tennis ball get "in the way" of your stride like it does in the pocket of your shorts. You know what I'm talking about...

Those pockets are only for water bottles and bananas :-D

The average American man 20 years old and up weighs 197.9 pounds . The average waist circumference is 40.2 inches, and the average height is just over 5 feet 9 inches (about 69.1 inches) tall - Data from 2019

Based off of that I am guessing that most men will wear a large or likely extra large.

All but a few of the shorts go up 1" per size, starting at med

Which means a 7 inch short is now a 9 inch inseam or 20-21 inch out-seam (total height of 69, means the shorts cover almost 1/3 of your vertical height). I am not sure that it is proportional.

Aw yeah man I guess I forgot to say that I’m vertically challenged as well:( 5’7 so it’s even tuffer to find the shorter inseam shorts . And man I’ve looked too . My problem is also I dig plain white shorts with no logo . That in itself isn’t easy the logo less un branded white short with side pockets that isn’t made of that crappy low rent MESH.. I hate MESH. So.. just . No.. can’t do it , number of reasons. No..
And every damn time I think I may of found a pair that checks all the boxes.. and starting to get super excited and press “ buy it now” I see .. oh nooooo , no side pockets
or I do find a pair w/ pockets and .., ahh crap . Open Mesh weave , damnit ! Or another pair . Perfect!! Ahh man .. $79 ...
crap ..
give up

I wear an older version of these. Pockets hold 2 balls. Length is a few inches above knees. It has a swim trunk lining, so no underwear (tmi I suppose)

I used to wear shorter shorts (which I liked), but I got a lot of strange looks. Especially off the court. This was 15 years ago when everyone was wearing shorts several inches below the knee.

Yeah I hear ya. I’ve only had one comment from a snarky bitc$&@, at work . She was taking a lesson with her BFF, next to my court where I was teaching ..kinda hurt my feelings and then made me real mad.. but after I got closer up to her I noticed she had a baseball cap with Rhine stones of sort . And an “affliction “type shirt on.. after I noticed all that , what I thought of first before I saw her and her clothing choices was what a rude wealthy girl .. but like I said once I got up and saw the situation she wasn’t what I thought .nope. Just a “new money white trash idiot “...
After the my lesson ended I had to run to my car for a phone charger , I noticed after I shut my car door to head back in the pro shop, a Loud muffler type car rollin into the parking lot . It was a Lamborghini something car ... I saw the guy get out .. he was wearing a flat bill baseball cap ( the 1st problem ) And sporting a under armour tank top ( second problem )
And thermo nuclear Oakley sunglasses (3rd problem ) and on his Lambo the sticker of NO FEAR” 4th problem and finally saw the white trash chick from before that was making rude comments on my shorts, run into this guys arms..
and I thought , now that is the PERFECT COUPLE!
.......typical....

Hell, just the other day I ordered some of those mens "capri" length soccer shorts just to see what Rafa was thinking "way back when." :) I should get them Thurs.

I really like the Lotto Men's Spring Top Ten II Woven 7" Short (sale priced now at TW).

I'm 176cm / 5'9⅓, but short-legged (can wear a 29" inseam) and they fall nicely above my knee. I do wear the US Medium, tho, since I weigh 74kg/164 lbs.

The fabric is silky and super light; the pockets are a similar cloth on the back (body) side, and a tight mesh on the front of the pocket.

I can't help with the no logo thing tho.

Long shorts look dumpy. I'm def. a fan of shorts that fall 3 or so inches above the knee. Show your thighs a little color, the tan line is better and you don't look so much like a pocky stick.

uniqlo shorts dryex fit like a dream. they are like 2 inches above the knee for me and I am 6'1 and bought a medium. inside the short pockets at least for the rf ones, their is like a towel built in. great shorts.

Used to buy only Nike but then came to my senses when their shorts got so long and baggy I looked like I had a medical problem with my butt and groin and their prices started to get too ridiculously expensive for a few pieces of polyester sewn together.
7in inseam is my go to spec, fits well above the knee, across all brands.

I’m thinking of using 3/4 pants once lockdown is over, I’ve worn the same pair for running, wall tennis and everything, pretty nice. But I have used short shorts occasionally.

I, too, have a strong dislike for long and baggy shorts. Fila has a model of tennis shorts - Stephan - with 5" inseam, available on the EU market, on sites such as TW-Europe. They come in classic Fila colors - white, navy, red - hence, they complement very well Fila heritage polos. I own five pairs and have found the quality to be excellent
