Shot Put Record is 30 Years Unbroken

Randy Barnes of the USA put the shot 23.12 meters in 1990; nobody has done better since. What happened? One expects these records in sports that are so dependent on advances in physical training and conditioning to be broken incrementally with some regularity, as training methods advance. Hitman, was Barnes some kind of freaky fine specimen?

Barnes is banned for life and served a 27-month suspension shortly after breaking the record. Most likely, he simply pushed the limits of anabololic steroid use as far as he could push it until he got caught. More recent athletes have who were cheating had to more carefully manage their drug protocols.

Recall a comment that the records at the Seoul Olympics may stand a long time due to the rampant drug use. Where is Ben Johnson?

Doha 2019 had three competitors come within 8 inches of breaking Barnes’ record. The three throws were the best in 20 years. The three guys will probably push each past the WR; success does not like a vacuum.

The word on the street is that only Russians are dopers, so this can't be true.

Revisionist history is how it works with Wada and the likes. Find something your enemy takes and declare it a ped. Meanwhile giving TUE's to your supporters.

Its political in a way, not sure if politics makes you uncomfortable, so ill stop :p

I did shotput when i was younger (was track n field). Its a thrusting motion, cant bowl it. Fun todo if you ever get the chance, ppl who weigh more do really good

If you can throw a shotput the proper way, you can KO people with a palm strike, also helps on the forehand, extension is strong.

Holding something that heavy in that motion was helpful. In order to hold it that high requires a strong core, really shows where you can be weak on court. High balls are perf example where this can apply. Serve speaks for itself if you understand the motion

You have to be “big boned” to compete at the top in this event but technique can equalize size disadvantage. Those three putters at Doha’19 ranged from 265 to 320 pounds. That night was not a one-off for the trio too...they were the three medalists at Rio’16. The “small” guy wound up third in both but by only 1 cm at Doha in shot put’s greatest night.

There have been no changes to the sport, no technology is going to change the shotput. Even the javelin guys got diff equip, but the shotput is always something strongmen like yourself and i can apprieciate :)

Would kettlebell training assist throwing a shotput? Still popular locally when gyms closed

In 1998, he tested positive for androstenedione, an over-the-counter supplement (famously used by baseball player Mark McGwire) that is banned in track and field. Although Barnes claimed he didn't know androsten was banned, he was suspended from competition for life.

The live cockroach eating record has stood for nearly 20 years.

The record for eating live cockroaches is held by Ken Edwards of Derbyshire, England. In 2001 he ate 36 hissing Madagascar roaches in one minute.

The shotput is probably not a very popular event. There could be big strong guys that could have broken the record had they been training for it.

How much does the big metal ball used for the shotput weigh?

I'll use a kettleball that is similar in weight and throw it across the gym to train for the shotput.
Just need to make sure that nobody is nearby when I do this.

Gotta few bowling balls to toss around the yard.

We question why so many of these shotputters are so morbidly obese.
It is quite offputting as we believe that athletes should possess a modicum of basic fitness. Is muscularity and healthy low body fat penalized in this sport?
Not particularly pleasant to watch these "athletes" ply their trade.

Can't you google that yourself?

In open competitions the men's shot weighs 7.260 kilograms (16.01 lb), and the women's shot weighs 4 kilograms (8.8 lb).
Shirley there must be plenty of putters with all the crossfit gyms locally. Tractor tire flippers

The oldest world record on the books in track and field for an event still competed is Jarmila Kratochvilova's 800 metres record of 1 min 53 seconds set in 1983. Caster Semenya has come within a second of the record. She was 32 when she ran that time. There were lots of questions about her then and still. She did not have remarkably fast times leading up to that race and she displayed an atypical muscular physique. I'll leave it to your own conclusions!

No. No google.

A friend told me that everything from MSM (mainstream media) is false and lies. The friend said that podcasts, and random websites making wild claims without proof are better sources.

Oh. and youtube videos. Wait... is youtube part of google?
I'll have to google to see if they are. ... but cannot... b/c google. what do do?

Seems sexist to not let the women use an equally weighted ball.

What exactly are they saying with rules like these?

No. No google.

I participated in the shot put in junior high track and field as a 14-year-old. We used an 8-pound shot.

I was ok at it for a wiry 145 lbs at the time. I was much better at other events, like the 100m dash, high-jump, and 75m low hurdles.
