Should Djokovic play the QF or quit before if injured ?

Reading on twitter that Djokovic is unsure he will play the QF against Ruud.

Should he step on the court and play or withdraw ?

If he’s really hurt and it could get worse of course he should stop.

But if painkillers that are at the allowable limit got him through that match then there’s a chance it’s really not that big a deal.

But who knows?

I think there will be pressure on him to play. He knows with the level he showed in the last 2 rounds he can make the finals

He wants to get No 25

Some on this site had a meltdown when Nadal battled his way through injury and defeated Fritz at Wimbledon only to withdraw before the next match with Kyrgios, so I'm sure a lot of people wanted Novak to retire during the Cerundolo match.

Sport is big business. Novak will not be allowed to withdraw even if he wanted to. Nowadays the dollar trumps players health.
If he is really injured as he swears and claims, he will withdraw from the tournament, even if it is a GS, as Nadal did in the semifinals of Wimbledon 2022.
If it is not so serious, he will play against Ruud.

It’s honestly not worth it, he’s already the King

Heal with stem cells and get ready for Wim

Our Djokovic used to have the quitting habit in his formative years until 2011. Watching Fedal’s commitment changed it all. Now he sets an example for the next generation

Yeah it really depends what kind of injury it is. If it's just pain but no risk to make it worse, then he should try. If there is a tear, a strain, a lesion (or worse), he should quit. And rest for Wimbledon. The Slam record is in the bag now. No need to endanger his body but that's his choice. No matter what he does, I'll support him.

If he is fit, he can most certainly beat Ruud (who played 2 matches in 1 day in Geneva last Sunday and also dropped 4 sets in 4 matches, just like Nole). Zverev must be just as exhausted after another 5 sets match. I like his chances to beat Ruud and Zverev IF he plays. The final would be another story but still very far.

Is this Nole's "Fed AO2020" moment? 2 back to back 5 setters followed by either a beat down to an in-form player or withdraw to assess injury?

It's hysterical this fan base swallows the lies hook, line and sinker. The rest of the world realizes there's no injury. It ain't rocket science.

So he faked an injury and took a fake MTO after breadsticking his opponent? You realize how silly that sounds to do that when you just won an opening set 6-1? Fake MTO are used to disrupt the opponent if you're down 1 set or close to lose to lose the match. The only person Djokovic would disrupt and penalize is himself, if what you're suggesting is true. If it was his intention (to sabotage himself), it worked well, did it? He won 6-1, took the MTO and then lost 7-5, 6-3, 4-2. That's hysterical, indeed.

He should never stop playing no matter what.
The rewards are very high, as it's been demonstrated that even 20-somethings can't beat them in almost 5 hour matches.
He will be OK and win ever after he's dead, if need be.

If he’s injured I would say pull out. He’s got bigger fish to fry. Olympics (his last chance and more important to his resume than RG as this completes his resume ) and Wimbledon

He would have won in 4 sets if he hadn't taken a MTO.

Let him play and suffer humiliation from Ruud.

A matchup against the Ruudinator will be the ultimate test for Novak. Ruud has ice water flowing through his veins, and my belief is that he is the fittest player on the tour by some margin.

Novak has done amazingly so far, but Ruudinator is another step up for sure. Novak is serving well, but the top players have gotten much better at reading his serve since last year.

For fans and non-fans of Novak, we should all be fascinated by his run here. I’m not a Novak fan for sure but even for me it has been interesting watching his match play skills and seeing how he is navigating through this.

The only bad scenario that I can see happening now would be if the injury is too severe to play through and something bad happens during the QF because of the court being too slippery or something like this.

Since 2020 I don’t have good faith in the way RG is being run. I love the new stadium but the details of organising things to make it better for the players has been horrible. Even in the Cerundolo match the court was literally baking and they were leaving it a dusty mess even with the very hard sub layer that RG has. Super slippery.

If Ruud has ice water flowing through his veins he'd be freezing dead by now.

He knows if he steps on court he has more than 50% chance of winning against everyone.
If he can play, even at 70%, his chances are really good at ranking up another title against inexperienced field.

He should withdraw.

There is just no point. Even if he was 100% fit, there is no way he beats Ruud, Zverev and Alcaraz/Sinner in a row.

He should just play. If he feels the injury getting worse, there is always an option to retire.
There is nothing to lose here.
You just cannot pass up these rare opportunities to play a Slam QF. It is what every player lives for.

It‘s going to tire him out for the next couple of weeks. His chances of winning Wimbledon and OG will decline.

He is not badly injured, it may be a slight repetitive strain type injury but nothing serious otherwise he wouldnt be running around like he did. Different people have different pain thresholds.

Nothing to lose? Clearly he disagrees as it seems he feels he has something to prove.

How much more experience Ruud needs

2 RG finals back to back
2 titles on clay in last 2 months
Masters final on clay

While Nole has not even reached a final in last 5 months.

This inexperience thing was ok on grass and only in 2021 because covid robbed next gens some times on grass. Even on grass now everyone is experienced. If they are inferior to him then it's on them.

I agree. If it is in danger of getting much worse if he plays then i think he will withdraw and try and be ready for Wimbledon & Olympics. If not too bad he should and almost certainly will play

Has Ruud ever played a night session at RG?

Djokovic has 33 more slam finals than Ruud and has won 24. Ruud has beaten a top 10 player in a slam once... :D

I think we have seen a hundred times how little the warm-ups mean for the top dogs.

I think the field is too strong for him to win with his current level. Ruud won’t be a problem if he’s fit. Zverev followed by Sinner would be too much to ask.

I feel an utter idiot for the above, so sorry to his fans for this, i just assumed as he finished so well and moved so well it was just inflammation. Please accept my apologies NoleFam.

Me too. I doubted the injury and was completely wrong. I feel badly because I expected Novak to reach the final and play Carlos. He has the same injury Roger had in his knee and those don't tend to heal completely.

It is very upsetting news for those of us who love the game. I didnt think he was faking anything btw, either did you, we both thought it wasnt severe enough to keep him out for tomorrow.
If it is true he is out of Wimbledon ,then i fear at 37 his career is over. And it is a true sickener as to see Roger retired due to an injury was bad enough, to see Rafa so compromised is truly sad, t then have this happen to Novak in the form he is in just is horrible.
