Let's suppose Djokovic wins the USO then I think the year end #1 is pretty much gone. But if he plays Shanghai then he can atleast get to 300 weeks at #1 isn't it? What do you make of it,should SMCRogi partake?

Nope. He won Paris last year so if he were to win Shanghai and skip Paris, he gains zero point.
Right. Especially if Nole is playing in those 2 events.

It was already pointed out in another post that, even if Novak wins the USO, Fed will still be #1 by a small margin.

Depends on his plans. I think he feels guilty about not playing last year and wants to give his Chinese fans a treat so he will do. Personally I think if Djokovic wins the US Open then he should gracefully accept Djokovic as the best player this year and try and save his body as much as possible for next year.

Federer with luck had a great shot at winning the US Open this year. I said several times there are a few players he needed to avoid: Berdych, Del Potro and Soderling(if he ever comes back). I think he had a very good chance against Murray and even Djokivic had he made it.
Next year will be harder, but there is still a shot at Wimbledon and an outside shot at the US Open. Those are his last shots at a slam for me, but he needs a lot of luck.
It's ironic that Federer has actually been very unlucky with draws in his time, but was so good it did not even matter. Now is the time where he needs fortunate draws.
Why? I thought Paris was his best tournament last year slightly ahead of WTF. That court just looked like it was made for him. The Berdych match there vs. at the Open is especially insightful. Berdych was playing just as well in Paris but he didn't stand a chance. I'm shocked Fed hadn't won that before. In my thinking, he should go for every indoor tournament available; it's the truest tennis possible and quite magical.

Great post! I agree wholeheartedly; Federer's forte lies with indoor tournaments, so he should just concentate on those.

True, but if you look further(if Fed does end the year #1), Fed won more slams in those 6 years, or 14 slams to Pete 11. He accumulate more weeks at number 1. He also won more titles, has higher atp points.
Anyway, I don't want to discuss this further because Fed/Nole is still in the race.
