Should players be banned for grunting?? With Sharapova and Azarenka reaching around 100 decibel when hitting a tennisball.

The discussion is there already since Seles played but the WTA doesn't do anything to prevent it...

I have watched 3 Sharapova matches and 4 Azarenka matches this tournament, and for all of them I had the volume on my computer (watching on ESPN3) at the same volume as I would watching Kvitova or another 'non-shrieker'. After about, oh, 2 shots you get used to the noise. Personally I do not find it the least bit distracting, but I realize others disagree.

there is difference a between grunt and scream .
Grunt is natural and sometimes involuntary.
I think Screaming should be banned.

Could you imagine no grunting, but it is ok to scream?

?
In my opinion is not ok to scream or yell ( sharapova, azarenka, schiavonne ),
you can´t hear the ball, it last very long, sometimes they even yell on slice shots.

I don´t know if grunt is the right word, but the sound one makes
when you expel air violently due to physical demand (and make a sound ) is the one that I think is natural and ok.

That´s just my opinion as a player, and as audience the noise is very annoying.

Your poll and thread are asking 2 separate questions. Should it be banned? No, and it would be impossible to do so. Should it be punished? I think so. Either fines or point penalties for excessive grunting/shrieking.

I think media has initiated the whole blow out about grunting.
And the guys grunt as well, Ferrer, Nadal, etc.
The girls simply have nigher voice pitch, that's all.
Are we prepared to say that we don't like this or that player voice pitch?
Skin color?

Imagine if grunting, screaming, shrieking, squeeling, yelling, howling etc to be banned hence in WTA there never be Sharapova, Azarenka, Williams sisters, Dementieva, Ivanovic, Kuznetsova, Petrova, Safina, Hantuchova etc. Therefore who still want to watch such a boring women tennis? Tell me...

If it occurs after the point is clearly over, I don't necessarily have a problem with it. Kvitova's shrieks however, sometimes occur while a point is being played, even if it's near the end and her opponent has given up on the play.

Any grunting, shrieking, wailing or other distraction while a point is being contested is out of line. Fans can't yell out from hundreds of feet away; it is doubly offensive and distracting from your opponent just across the net.

I've played against shriekers and grunters and it is definitely distracting. If tennis is going to allow someone right on court to shriek, then let the fans yell in the middle of the point as well.

The game can't have it both ways.

That shriek Kvitova was doing after winning points was equally annoying.

They should all just shut their pie holes and play tennis. Azarenka had the balls to complain to the chair that fans were talking.... too much. Maybe they could also have the coaching stopped or the players play tennis under the time allowed. The best match ever would be Rafa vs Sharapova. 3 hours to play one set... 45 seconds to serve. No wonder tennis on TV on the USA is not watched.. Sharapova's matches all go at least 2 hours.. even if she wins 2 and 3. 3 setters cross the 3 hour mark with ease. On top of that we have to 2 folks in the TV booth, one on the court.. and 3 others on site all talking about the match. Telling us what is going on. It is not spliting the atom.. tennis is a simple game. Most of us get it and understand at least as much (if not more) as the 6 folks telling all about the match. Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!

I personally think it should be banned. Until Monica Seles came along, there really wasn't any of this grunting and screeching. There are plenty of women that hit the ball hard that don't make these noises. There's no reason for it, I wan't to see and hear tennis, not see tennis and hear a porno going

Well it is most unfortunate that Sharapova beat Kvitova; I can just imagine the raucous ricochet of screams and yelps right now which will undoubtedly occur in the final, akin to a cacophony of ar-se.

I can't believe I'll be supporting Azarenka to win a championship over somebody else. The noise many players make is just too much!

The AO final will be one big shriekfest. Everyone watching needs noise cancelling head phones or put the tv on mute.

It should be banned if its done for every shot in other words if its a force of habit.

However the odd grunt when a player makes to put in more effort for a shot is admissible imo. Examples of this are Fed's second serve grunt and Delpo's grunt when he tries to go for extra on his FH. Delpo doesn't grunt on every FH he hits.

Solutions to problem of excessive and extreme grunters.

Imho It's really WTA's fault for the shrieking problem we have today.

This generation of players is lost. But next generation can be saved.

Set a cutoff point, 2-3 years from now.

With clearly defined rules for unacceptable levels of grunting. Shrieking is banned.

Give a mandatory education course each year with video examples and force/embarrass the worst offenders to change behaviour.

After 3 years of education the standard time violation like penalties kick in.

Be consistent in applying the new rules to all.

AND as a fair'ish "interim" solution to shrieking?

Allow current shriekers to continue but make them pay for the privilege.

From $1-10 shriek depending on tiered category (ITF, WTAtour, GS, tv exposure, persistent offenders). 30 shot rally $300, average rally 5-8 shots.

Kind of like $100 for each ace, except replaced by noise pollution tax.

So players don't kick up a stink, the money goes to a local charity.

Now obviously the current successful offenders will ignore / factor in the costs of shrieking.

But imagine the early career deterrent effect on younger players, they will not be able to shriek to excess without feeling the hurt.

It'll add up and if shrieking means going without a physical trainer or nutritional consultant or bf, i'm certain the correct decision will be made by the player or there coach.

What are your thoughts on solutions and penalties?

I grunt. Jimmy Connors grunted. Andre Agassi grunted enough to get Lendl to complain to a chair umpire. Only way to enforce a grunting code fairly is to have a meter on the court to measure the relative attractiveness of the offender. If you are really good looking you should be allowed to make all the noise you want. This will winnow out the offenders with no redeeming qualities.

Grunting 1/2 second after contact, like Murray and Alcaraz do, should be punished in the usual warning, point, game, match way.
Brief grunts at the moment of contact are ok. Extended grunts that follow the ball through to the other side of the court are just ridiculous and I don’t understand how they are still allowed. Nadal, Djokovic, Alcaraz, Thiem are all guilty of that. Examples of a brief grunt are Rublev’s bweh, or Zverev’s weird sound he makes that probably bothers the viewers but I don’t see how would it bother the opponent.
