Should Medvedev win the USO based on how easy his draw is?

Going into the quarters, he's basically faced no one.
In the quarters it'll be Sinner or Paul, his first real challenge.
Then after that it would be Draper or de Minaur, not the biggest challenge. (He's 6-3 H2H vs de Minaur.)
The highest seed he could face in the final is Zverev. The other three options are Fritz, Tiafoe, or Dmitrov and I like his odds against any of those three.

What say you?

Not facing anyone great until now is not a great thing..... having a cakewalk draw defeats the purpose if you have to face someone strong in later rounds.... winning with a cakewalk draw means all 7 opponents are average.... this is clearly not that case

But there's always that theory of having conserved physical and mental energy

But there's always that theory of having conserved physical and mental energy

Conserving energy is only applicable to people who are either injured/old/unfit, one of the 3.

A person like Sinner cannot be stopped just because he is being given tough matches while Med is beating unseeded mugs in straight sets....infact it is the other way round, Sinner is at an advantage because he is playing stronger opponents ...... So Med conserving energy like that is useless.... Med will be thrashed in 4 sets regardless of how much energy he is conserving ....

With Alcaraz and Djokovic out, it sure feels like this quarter is the real final. It should be the toughest match of the tournament for whoever wins it, and they should go on to win the whole tournament after.

But even with the other potential semi-finalists and finalists looking real easy, it's not exactly a cakewalk draw for Medvedev (or Sinner for that matter). Med has to play the world #1 and the man who beat him at the last hard court slam. Not a cakewalk. And from Sinner's perspective, he gets the toughest QF of the bracket, despite being the #1 seed. He's facing the only US Open champion left in the draw, on what is probably Medvedev's most comfortable court on tour.

"Should" win means it being the expectation that he beats Sinner in the QF and that's nonsense. I hope he does and goes on to win his second USO, tbh, but I don't expect it and just want a proper heavyweight contest.

Since Djokovic was defeated and is out of the tournament, I want Medvedev to win. I think he should win not because of his draw, but because he plays well at USO. He has a chance vs. Sinner, probably Sinner still has the edge because of the way the last matches have gone.

There is nothing cake about running into the world number one and the best player on HC who has beaten you the last five times on this surface, and that too just to get out the quarter final...

Sinner is the best player on the planet and the man in form, if Medvedev beats him, he will completely deserve the title.

Same here and only Zverev would have some chance.
I think zverev has played well all year.
It’s not that I’d be shocked if he doesn’t win - he’s got the game and resume to do it. But he also has shown the ability to crumble when he gets to this stage. He had no excuses for that 2020 USO collapse against Thiem.

He’s already played a 3R match til 2:52 am finish.
Those late night early round matches can come back to bite you in week 2.

He is the best HCer in the world so he should. Medvedev will win USO and take Sinner to the woodsheds bank on it.

Enough of a consideration to throw the Wimbledon result out the window?

Rankings system make this a possibility. All those points med had to defend this year dropped him from 3 to 5.
To be fair, we got them in the Final in Melbourne. Just seems these draws are always Novak friendly where the titans who really trouble him are in the other half.

Not really.
1 , 3 and 5 are usually placed in the same half.
2 , 4 and 6 - same.

Carlos lost first round in Cincinnati and could have easily slid Novak to the 3 seed but it didn’t happen.

Things will change in Melbourne, well shortly after this tournment when zverev will be #2 and Novak 4th. If med wins US open he will be 4. Possibly 3 but idk.
