Should Nadal be mad?

I know hes pretty hated on these forums but do you guys think that he has a right to be upset about the order of play?

I found these quotes related to Possum being mad:

"It's the same old story," Nadal said to Early of the decision to play in the light rain. "All you think about is money."

ESPN's Pam Shriver said Nadal appeared "venomous" after going down 0-3 to Gilles Muller before the rain delay. Their match had been postponed from Tuesday and was delayed an hour on Wednesday because of inclement weather.

He first expressed his anger with the passive-aggressive waiting game before the match. While Muller waited by the doors to walk out into Arthur Ashe Stadium, Nadal lingered in the locker room for eight minutes before joining him. He was asked about it by ESPN's Tom Rinaldi in the pre-match interview and unconvincingly blamed it on a miscommunication with the ATP.

His later actions suggest the same. Nadal was clearly displeased during warm-ups and at the start of the match.

Possum mad? Roddick too?

Well, Too Bad!

They're professionals. If the show must go on, the show must go on. It's the Nadals and Roddicks of this world who truly make professional tennis unpalatable to sports fans. The obsessive whining and complaining!

I do hope more people will now be aware that it's an unmistakable fact Nadal is out to cheat at every opportunity.

Uhh, until someone slips in the rain and breaks their neck. You ever run around on even a slightly damp hard court? It's scary as heck.

The USTA was trying to get an hour of play in so they wouldn't have to refund tickets today hence the "it's all about money" comment. You know...trying to take the money off the fans at the potential risk of the players. Pretty bad stuff really.

P.S. The other players weren't happy either.

I feel it may effect Nadal a little more than other players he is predisposed to not like change, he must have order to feel secure, that is why it upsets him so much.

Nonetheless, I happen to agree with him, the interest of big business is well above the desires of the players and the fans.

They put those players on court to make sure they could get some advertising revenue from the sponsors but they wont admit that, instead you will hear they put them out there for the fans. :) Total lie, they already have the fans money, but no doubt there is something in the advertising contract that limits how much they can charge advertisers if they are not showing a live match.

Well, too bad! It's not all about him. And he doesn't control the order of play.

You mean a network would rather show live tennis than a bunch of talking heads? Now there's a concept? And the fans would rather sit around not watching live tennis than watching live tennis ? ! ?

Don't blame him for being upset. The courts were only playable for a few minutes and it was misting the entire time. No need to risk serious injury just to play 15 minutes.

he should be mad the other players are using him as a pinata these days.

If the officials decide that the bottom half will play 4 days in a row not only does he have the right to be upset but he should pull out of the tournament.
If he accepts this crap I will stop being a fan.

I think pulling out of the tournament would be whiny and stupid beyond belief. You know the best way to stick it to the tournament?

Win the whole thing.

Typical nadal complaining about everything. He should realize its not only effecting him.

Two days of rained out tennis and a sh1t storm erupts on TW. Everyone should chill out, no one can control the weather, and there isn't a roof so you can't do anything about it.

eh, normally Im not a fan of Rafa's histrionics, but he had a good point today.

Why put me on a wet and slippery court when its still raining? I know i wouldnt have wanted to play. One slip and your career is over.

Bad form from the USTA. I dont blame Rafa one bit. This isnt baseball where at least they have cleats to dig into the field.

I agree with nadal. They just wanted the minimum hours of play so they could consider the session completed and not refund tickets. Not to mention ATP probably told him that he had more time then rushed them out without tape. Give me a break

Maybe for you. Although maybe for the extremely-injury prone Nadal too.

However, that is an extreme over exaggeration. Give me an example who slipped and ended their career.

why risk the injury? you could slip and roll your ankle and at the very least your season could be done?

Why risk it??

Are you serious? Players have slipped and fallen on DRY courts and been seriously injured. He was right to protest being forced to go out and play on wet courts just so the USO doesn't have to give refunds. They chose money over the safety of the players.

dumb answer why would anybody risk any type of injury for 1 tennis match. the usta is a joke just looking to make money. Tommy Hass stepped on a tennis ball as was out for 9 months so what would happen if nadal was running full speed and tore up his knee. James Blake slipped on clay hit the net post and was out over 6 months is that enough

why play wimbledon then? Tons of players slipped all over the place, but they still played.

In any match there is a risk of getting an injury. So what your saying is no match is worth the risk? Get your scared ass off the tennis court:)

Yup, they are professionals. Who should act professionally, when the organizers of their profession act professionally. If not, then should be professional enough to take stances against the unprofessional behavior of the organization/organizers and try to make them act professionally.

Why should they care what you think? I personally agree with the players, it's not fair to them.

It's a much bigger risk playing on wet courts. If someone says they won't drive 150 mph because the risk of injury is too great, that doesn't mean they also object to driving 5 mph in the parking lot - which does have a risk of injury too, albeit very small.

150mph on a wet windy road, in the dark at that.

bah, this guy is trollin. Or just a completely irrational rafa hater. no reasonable tennis fan thinks its a good idea to play at the pro level on wet courts when its raining.

I was hitting against the wall a few weeks ago. I played for a bit in the light rain, but once the courts were completely wet, I got the hell out of there.

I am generally not a fan of Nadal, but I think he is correct to complain. Looking at radar, the officials could have known with some certainty how much time they would have before rain came.
Also, for those talking about it not being a risk. You are partly right. It is usually not a risk because the players would not have been sent out to play in that. And though it isn't tennis, one fall can end your career. Check Robert Edwards in American Football playing a "friendly" exhibition style game.

What Nadal should be most mad about is that they are going to do women's matches during the night session (if they can). Why on earth would they do this when they are crunched for time??? The women play back-to-back 3 setters all the time, it's the men who are facing having to play best of 5 four days in a row. Is there something I'm missing here? It just seems like idiotic decision making for the second time today.

Nadal is right. They were asked to go on court and they did. However, the conditions were not safe. Why should they risk serious injuries if they shouldn't be out playing in the first place?

And before anyone talks about other sports being played rain or shine or snow, we're talking about hard courts here. Is there any other major sport out there that's played on cement? Playing on these slippery conditions is very dangerous.

Rafa was talking on Sky Sports just a moment ago, and he said that he's very annoyed at how low down the list of priorities the interests of the players and fans are. He says the USTA and the TV networks have too much power.

How clueless are you go play on a wet court have fun.

The men complained so they are being punished for it, by not getting to play if it clears up tonight.

wow...tournament directors that petty?

Just watching espn, they showed Petkovic, Pennetta, Pavylvbdskova(!!) and Wozniacki huddled in convo with Serena's agent.

Mac joked that the agent was saying "this is what Serena says you should do"..

Very telling Serena sent her agent...it seemed to John that they were maybe contemplating refusing to take the court like the men. Surely it means something Serena wasnt there in person.

^^No. They're still hoping to get the women's matches in because they're hoping to get a small window by which they can get best-of-three matches in, as opposed to the best-of-five for the men. They were never going to get the men to finish tonight anyway.

He can't do that playing 4 days in a row.

Nothing is impossible, if he faces Fed in the final especially. Furthemore, some of the next few days could be rained out as well giving him and other players at the bottom half a day of rest inbetween.

If what you say is true then clearly the men playes who refused also may be playing copycat on each other and their refusal is not really spontaneous but perhaps a case of one guy instigating it all and others jumping on the bandwagon out of opportunism.

If you morons are gonna critisize Nadal, then critisize Murray, Djokovic and Roddick too because they also complained about this and Joker even suggested to Pam Shriver there should be a roof. Despite the FACT that Nadal, Murray and Roddick complained to the referee you people only take that chance to throw Nadal under the bus even more.

Nadal stated his opinion. Whats wrong with that ?. How is that cheating?. What facts are you referring to?

Of course he (and the others) are right to complain. Any reasonable person would agree with that and see what the USTA was trying to do in sending them there... as can be seen by the fact that only a couple of irrational Nadal haters (mathieu, DMan and jerriy) here are disagreeing. They're attitude is just bizarre.

I am surprised by how much Nadal is saying about this though and how straight forward he's being about it. Surprised in a good way.

OK. Milos Raonic, who rose from 185at the beginning of this year to 27by by June or whenever Wimbledon was slipped on the grass because it was still wet from the rain and injured his hip and hasn;t been able to play since. His year was ruined and possibly his career. Wimbledon apologized to him...big deal. PS do you play tennis in the rain or at all?

Nadal is being used by USTA as a Scapegoat! Question ESPN's reporting, making it seem that Nadal was the only player upset and the most outspoken. Applaud his leadership and willingness to speak out. The health of the players was not a priority today - so let's just tell it like it is!

USTA Official was interviewed and actually said five of the six men set to play today did NOT complain, only Roddick. The camera then went back to Brad Gilbert who said that he personally saw Andy Murry complain to the Umpire, before the match began, as he was on that particular court!

Everybody here forgot Murray and Roddick went in the office with Nadal and voiced their displeasure too. But in the Nadal Hater Warehouse Forum it's all Nadal's fault and he's a baby for complaining. Of course! Nadal is the antichrist in this forum.

Agree and the actions of the players today totally EXPOSED the USTA for who they are - greedy a$$holes and liars:

Watched two officials being interviewed on TC and ESPN:
On Tuesday One said "Well you can't plan for rain!"
The Other said "Five of the Six men set to play today did NOT complain only Roddick did. The camera went back to Brad Gilbert who boldly said well I was on one of the courts and heard Murray complaining to the Umpire before the match!

Then not to jeopardize television advertising dollars they try to force play and even act as if match play will go on each rainy day!

Crazy - Embarrassing - Disgusting - Damn Foul and Foolish

If no tennis at all is played tomorrow(WTA or ATP) there will be a huge uprising from the players who are affected. Interesting that the lesser ranked players like Muller and Ferrer did not complain as Roddick, Murray and Nadal did, to the tournament director about the situation. Shows that rank rules in tennis, (and in life as well)

Nadal should be mad and bitter for life, but he is cheerful and happy, what a great sportsman and ultimate champion. Fededer piled up slams because of no competition, while Nadal and Djokovic now have to contend with the prime each other plus the unbelievable new talent like Golubev and Dolgopolov.

That's not good (the last thing tennis needs is more elitism)

That's not all.

The stingy, miserly USTA also leave players and officials stranded (they also penny-pinch the transport budget and don't pay toll for the Manhattan tunnels (thereby forcing shuttles to make detours and get stuck in traffic)

Think of the ATP as being a union..and an ineffective one. They are the employees and the tournaments are the employers. To be most effective the pros should all go on strike. But playing is the only way that they make a living. So the idea of going on strike is unlikely. No play, no money, no play no ranking, no play, no endorsements. So they are at the mercy of their employers, the tournaments. And that's how pro tennis is. And always will be.

They are not talking about boycotting tennis. They want the players' interests to be much more predominant at the US Open, and that means a bigger ATP influence. The ATP have run the vast majority of the tour since 1990, and that didn't come through the goodness of the bosses' hearts. The Australian Open and the French Open usually pay enough attention to the interests of the players to avoid too much fuss, while disputes between Wimbledon and the players tend to be more because of the "traditions" of the British aristocrats rather than the cynical greed of US corporations.

All the players have a right to be mad, when its apparent that tournament officials are not concerned about the obvious rainy playing conditions! Mary Jo and Brad Gilbert reported that before the women matches all the women gathered together and talked to officials voicing their concerns about injuries on a wet slippery surface as well!

Had not Murray, Roddick and Nadal spoken out collectively, the USTA would have been ping ponging the players out on the court throughout each rainy day, when it is obvious no end to such weather is in sight.

USTA and ESPN making us all look ridiculous!
