Should Naomi Osaka pull a Marshawn Lynch at press conferences?

What's the problem with organisers also showing a little leniency on press conferences ... in her specific case if she can document it?

I personally believe she did the right thing by withdrawing.
She should talk to doctors and and take treatment before coming back, don't rush things

I don't know how you could know this for certain, but to me she looks anxious and socially awkward during pressers. You may enjoy watching people crack under pressure, but I don't.

Christ, not that I'm religious, demonstrated the nastiness of Judas complaining about how the cost of a meal could have fed the poor a while ago, so I won't go into it.

Oh please, she is an entitled super wealthy sport star with an attitude. She needs a reality check and some humble pie. And it's certainly no coincidence this happened at RG. She can't handle being criticized for her clay game, really? That qualifies as MENTAL HEALTH now???? Come on. If she doesn't like being a pro, give the millions back and find a low profile job instead. People are starving now. Literally. How about some decency from Miss "I get millions from sponsors but rules should not apply to me"

Your orange friend certainly played the victim with his cry-baby whining about his toys being stolen.

Everybody is a victim.

It is very telling that none of her fellow players have a problem doing these 10 minute softball pressers. Their silence in the wake of this is deafening.

The problem lies entirely with her. If she really has a problem, the solution is not to avoid pressers or dictate what questions can be asked?! Don't ask me about my double fault or my clay record. That is an attack on my mental health.

The solution is to take some speech lessons and learn how to talk like an adult instead of a nine year old child and respond to these innocuous questions that every other player manages to do without breaking down and crying.

It is basically the same five questions that are asked over and over at every presser. This is not rocket science.

To answer the header question, Naomi can just pull a Rafa.

When needled about past 'bad ' performances, just say 'What happened at...happenED, What happened at...happenED, What happened at...happenED... here we are, we are in... Would work best if said with no gap between words, Rafa style
Whathappenedat...happenEDWhathappenedat...happenEDWhathappenedat...happenEDherewearewearein

OR when a Spanish reporter summarised his 'bad' performance and asked 'How are you going to Rome now?
He said 'By plane' :-D

As I said to octomom, Nadal just rehearses the same cliches and essentially says nothing. But he is full of confidence, and does this knowingly. Osaka is not.

Not really. How is that a rehearsed cliche. It was really funny and truthful... that one can't keep analyzing the past but move on

And what about this retort for the oft repeated question about his opinion on Fed

[OK, I've seen you argue ad nauseam on some silly stance of yours based on your prejudices, so this post is not to have a discussion with you; it's just a timeline cleanse for some comic relief on the topic of stressful/boring pressers]

That doesn't appear to be a post-match press conference, which is what we were talking about, so it looks as though you shot yourself in the foot.

I stand by my post. She's doing this HUGE drama/diversion/victim act just because she sucks on clay. You want to be a pro? Start by acting like one.
and this is why we can't have nice things here on TTW! All you triggered alt right maga snowflakes just won't let it go or abide by the rules of the forum.

It's a pre tournament conference... which top guys.gals do before any big tournament. it's for publicity and is as or more relevant as a post-match presser

Spam organisation are stupid people, but I think Naomi should take rest, it is better for her health.
She has money, no need to rush.
In any case it was her family member who started this issue by asking about her clay skills, she can't run forever if she is playing tennis so better for her to get help and treatment which is more important than any press conference or tennis match

He's still not talking about the match. He's talking about his love affair with Federer. A lot of his reported press conferences are quite boring and formulaic. Not when he's on about the bromance, clearly.

It happened after the RAFA vs Rublev match at the USO 2017

It was started by Osaka saying she wouldn't give press conferences, not her sister, and mental health issues take months if not years to resolve.

She is entitled to perform while she heals, and tennis organisers should give her a pathway to play.

Wasn't a family member asked about his clay skills at least that was Marie Osaka said but in case if you are playing matches somebody will ask about this.
I want her to be best for future, mental and health problems can destroy people see Seles

There have been a lot of train wrecks in the WTA, so all this is not new.

It appears you are wrong about timing,

but in any event post-match pressers are different, especially if you lose.
That was a post match presser.as #62 says. Anyway it was just to illustrate how to answer a boring oft repeated question

here's a Rafa presser 2007 after his Wimby final loss where he cried for an hour and is still holding his tissues.

Just an aside, funny to see that GOAT question as far back:laughing:

If these conferences unnerve her she should get drunk first and do an Oliver Reed. I expect half the press corp are tipsy unless times have changed.

I'm not criticising Nadal's approach to post-match pressers, I'm just saying that 'this is all she has to do' approach is woefully misconceived.

And it is the approach recommended by the OP.

It's almost weird to think this is how his pressers were when I joined lol. Im so used to his english being so good now.

I guarantee you that because of this, press conferences will become non-mandatory. And that's a shame. Once someone gets "woke" on something, the movement doesn't stop.
Regardless of the issue at hand, I think these press conferences should be optional. They’re becoming ridiculous as the players who are forced to attend them will say nothing interesting. I’m sure some players love to do such conferences and if they go there willingly, it’s because they are willing to have a real conversation with the press. Making pressers optional will actually raise the quality of the content.

I think the issue of content is exactly why tournaments make attendance mandatory. They need to show that they are giving access to the press. What can be done instead is to curtail their length for the losing player. It need not be necessary for every journalist present at the conference to ask questions of the losing player. Let that be restricted to five questions chosen as per the discretion of the organizer. If that monopolizes access to the top outlets, no problem, because the point is to improve visibility of tennis. A tennis tournament is not a govt and players aren't govt officials. They are NOT obliged to answer journalists. But fostering a climate of some minimum interaction is good for the sport so better not to make the conferences optional.

The public relations team of the respective slams can also monitor the questions and pull up repeat offenders of stupid questions and curtail their access next time. This will put pressure on journalists to do their homework instead of boring the players to tears.

Nope, JustMy2Cents was wrong earlier
yeah, I didn't know when it was but my main purpose in citing it was how to have some humor in addressing repeat questions.

Anyway, it's unbelievable a reporter wants Rafa to mouth some more plaudits about Fed after so many prior questions on same lines.

My purpose in citing Rafa in the context of pressers is because he faced a lot of condescending questions as a newcomer... he was branded a one trick pony after his huge successes on clay, constantly questioned about his grass/HC prowess. [a bit of conflation about Naomi being questioned about clay/grass performance].

After a tough Wimby final loss, he's made to answer about Fed's impending 'GOAThood'. It's not the job of the press to encourage him but to build the narrative they already had with Fed as GOAT.

This is just how the world is; people have agendas, opinions and it's up to the individual to handle it and prove them wrong!

I believe her when she says she is depressed, but she needs to extricate herself from far more commitments than just pressers if she wants any semblance of isolation.

Think it was Hurkacz, his next tournament after he won Miami I believe.
Oops, yes you are right. Karatsev was being lectured on how to answer the questions properly, and Hurkacz was not asked any questions. And then there are people defending the press.

But how difficult is it to take a claim for an exemption, test it, and either approve it or not? The slam chiefs act as if this will cause the sky to fall in. It won't.

Absolute legendary move from Osaka. Really based. She might get some pop status over this thing. She shows that she is not to be ****ed with, and shes right. Good for her and tennis.

I think they would have or would have at least got badly exposed for not being considerate had Osaka only played her cards more smartly. She should have approached them first - without going nuclear - and THEN unleashed the tweet bomb. Then, had the tournaments protested, she would have the prior communication to back her stand. Then players would have come around to her view too. As it stands, she put herself in a difficult position because either she didn't think to get good advice before going ahead with her strategy or whoever advised her misguided her.

This is an unrealistic scenario. The slams had kind words but no real movement in their statement. Indeed, they escalated the situation by threatening disqualification and bans. They're not budging!

She (or her PR team more likely) played their cards all wrong. She publicly trashed the press, insinuated that they were a blight on the mental health of the entire tour by their very nature (a claim that looked hollow when numerous players denied it), and then pre-emptively said she would swallow any fine and donate it to a charity. She basically dared the slams to fine her and refused to talk with RG when they tried reaching out to her directly. Note there was nothing about her own depression, but only a vague allusion to "mental health" in the original statements. So the Slams did what any negotiator would do when they felt they were being taken for a ride and decided to up the ante with the threat of disqualification. Easy to look at this process in hindsight and accuse them of being heartless, but that original statement was all about the press and had nothing about her own specific situation, which was clearly the issue all along.

You use their phrase 'reaching out' but it is essentially meaningless without specific content. And there was none other than threats, and so she withdrew.

What do you mean? The New York Times reports they tried to contact her several times to discuss the issue directly but she wasn't available? This was even before she skipped her first presser.

That's an interesting argument, but one that would take a long time through the courts.

The IOC is telling athletes if they get ill in Tokyo it's none of their concern.

The IOC is also telling Japan if they cancel the games, they'll be paying the IOC tens of billions.

Organisations control the horizontal and the vertical, even when it comes to countries and not just individuals.
just theoretically, what would the IOC do if japan just didn't cough up?

as for naomi her mistake was thinking they'd stop at fines. now she's backed herself into an awkward position

There are compulsory arbitration clauses in some of these international agreements which are binding on the parties.

Being kicked out of the Olympics for some time would be an option.

Give me one job in this world which has no downside? I like my job, but there are also tasks involved I don't like to do. Maybe I am even scared of them, and have sleepless nights because of that. But still, you have to do them. And I know its maybe not argument, but the amount of money this top athletes are earning it is just ridiculous to take anxiety as an argument not to do the downsides of one job...

As someone who followed this discussion, I don't recall anyone here predicting that they would threaten disqualification and bans.

The clauses only allow for fines, but there are always those famous all-encompassing clauses that allow organisations to take more severe action.

Even then, how do you take a sovereign nation to court? It's kinda strange, like what court? They could just refuse to pay then too, not like anyone is gonna try and arrest them. It wouldn't look good sure but plenty of countries just ignore much more serious judgements. i reckon they should just blow off the IOC and cancel it

Legendary?

Players have missed Majors for all sorts of reasons, including being removed by the organisers for things they have done. That is neither new, nor particularly "courageous".

Only someone, who is already a believer that she is "in the right", will see that as a bold move. She is not going anywhere on clay, so for her it is merely combining convenient decisions: leave while winning and gain what you were told by your sponsor to gain. If someone is under the impression that that is anything else, but the latest and greatest Nike marketing campaign, he is blind for the reality.

Tennis will not gain anything as a result. Tennis is not Osaka, as I read here that someone suggested.

8-)

Yeah I have no idea what it technically allowed but as you say, those agreements usually ultimately allow the corporation to do whatever they like. the lawyers that write them know what they're doing.

I always figured that if she was gonna come out and try to pre-empt fines that was a stupid move cos shes just telling them fines mean nothing to her so of course they're gonna jump to defaulting her etc if at all possible. theyre not just gonna let it ride lol

And what proposals were they communicating to her in these phone calls?

lol no
even if she's morally right, it's dumb and will likely end badly for her
