Should players be allowed one instant replay challenge per match? - The miscarriage of justice for FAA against Draper

After watching that, I feel just like before most tournaments went to full blown electronic line calling, players were given two challenges for Hawk Eye per set, why not have one instant replay given per match also.

All the events have big screens, they can play it on there and situations like what we saw with FAA can at least be given a fair assessment.

But just one instant replay, so players need to be extra careful and sure, when they use it.

Thoughts?

Ive watched slow motion replays so many times and I still cant see what is wrong with the shot. The ball hits the ground from the opponents shot and then hits the frame of Draper's racquet and goes back over the net. A miss hit but still looks legitimate to me.

I must be wrong given the stick Im seeing the umpire getting but im just not seeing any double hits or Draper hitting it into the floor. If im not seeing it even from slow motion replays I can see why the umpire thought the shot was legitimate in real time so it seems harsh the stick he is getting.

It makes no sense to give the players a challenge for something that happens very rarely. I think good umpires don’t wait for a player to challenge. They will ask to review the replay on their own. Maybe it’s a good idea to evaluate umpire performance regularly as it seems to me there are two clowns who recently were involved in frequent controversies. Both happen to be British, and judging from British football referee reputation, I think they should be under increasing scrutiny.

This umpire told FAA that an umpire is not allowed to review the video during the match.

But umpire says he will review the video after the match and admit to FAA that he is wrong if video shows it hitting the ground.

Will be interesting to hear what happens

Yes obviously. It shouldn’t even be a challenge. If the chair umpire isn’t sure then he can ask for it. I’m sure the guy in the chair last night would have really appreciated the option to review that call on video replay.

Who cares if they blew the call at match point?

And while technically it is Draper's call that was about as close as one can get it certainly anyone who has played tennis knows when it is that close you really cannot tell off the feel of the racquet.

Draper outplayed FAA and would have won it a point or two later.

I am not a supporter / fan of either player but that is how I saw it.

They can add replay I am ambivalent just then we are going end up with blocked angles where it hard to tell and officials with their heads under cloaks for 15 minutes looking at screens, etc. and still arguments after the call you watch. I bet you any amount even after they look at the call and the ruling there will be even more arguing...

Great post, Hutman.

Yes, just like football referees can recheck the plays using VAR, and basketball referees can check replays on computer screens, tennis umpires should be able to recheck controversial plays on a screen at will.

I think the problem is that the main gif of the hit floating around doesn't really do what happened justice compared to actual video footage of it. Basically what happens is the ball comes across, hits his racquet, gets pushed to the ground, back up to his racquet and then over the net. It's pretty clear in my view and It's easily visable if you watch the footage. The video/gif Tsitsipas posted on his twitter shows it pretty clearly too.

I watched the Tennis TV video of it and the moment was grainy. That said, I couldn't see anything wrong with the shot. Like you, I feel like I must be wrong but surely someone must have a clear video if there's so much certainty around it...?
