I think the only man on the planet that can stop Federer from breaking Sampras' Grand Slam record is Sampras himself. Can you imagine if Sampras came back and took Federer out of next year's Wimbledon and US Open and then Federer gets so depressed that he never breaks Sampras' Grand Slam record? How amazing would that be?

Hey, I know, what if Pancho Gonzalez comes back from the grave and hits an ace that bounces straight into Federer's head and kills him?
:rolleyes::rolleyes::lol:
stop living in fantasy world. Sampras couldn't even last three sets with Fed on grass, not to mention HC.

I am shocked! SHOCKED, that someone with the name "FedForGOAT" would say such a thing! What is this world coming to?

Sampras not being able to last 3 sets on grass? The way Sampras plays, the average point lasts like 1.2 seconds. Most of his serves are aces which last like 0.4 seconds. A 3 set match on grass for Sampras would not last much more than 90 minutes. Don't worry, even a 36 year old can play tennis for more than 90 minutes. I should know. :)

Sampras is one of my favourite (now-ex) player.
BUT - he will not pass first or second round. The game is far away, then was 5 years ago. His physical ability is poor now (he looks like grandpa on court), his game sucks, incl. volleys. Only what he has is serve and that is NOT enough.
You cannot judge him now just from a few "show", friendly matches. The young players will eat him like a candy.
Stay home, play exhibition, enjoy your family.
We still love you Pete!

Funny for a guy who would not reveal his age ;-)

anyways, I admit that was an exaggeration which stemmed partly for my exasperation over the stupidity of this thread and the grass being slowed down in wimby, but it was wrong, nevertheless.

point is, grass is much slower nowadays and even if Sampras does get to play Fed, he'll probably lose in straights because his serve would not be as big as on carpet.

I wouldn't say his game "sucks", but the rest is pretty much true.

I think he should take the wildcard while he has the chance while the era is full of western grip baseliners. All those extreme grips and the court positioning of most those baseliners is a big liability on grass versus a grass king like Sampras.

I think he should play wimbledon and a couple of the other smaller grass turnaments to get a few matches.

He should get at least to the 1/4s like Roddick did..if he runs out of energy by the time he reaches the semi, at least he had a good run.

I don't see anyone in the draw being a favourite over Sampras in a singles match on grass except Federer.

Sampras would get tired from matches. From the QF almost anyone would be a favorite over him, assuming he makes the QF.

tired? Wayne Arthurs played 6 matches over 10 days sw19 aged 36 this year? What is so different about Sampras? Are you scared that he will face George bastl rnd 1(?)

He is too lazy instead of entering the greatest tennis tournament for one last encore he would rather play golf and rearrange is sock draw before playing his yearly exo.....unless he enters 08 he will always be seen as a relic from the S&V era

well everybody counted Jimmy Connors out when he made his comeback at age 39 at the US Open in 1991. and he made it to the Quarterfinals! or was it the Semis??

still, Sampras is still capable of beating most of these players today on grass. with his serve, he can hold serve nearly every time. and hope that he gets a lucky break or 2 on the returns.

No. Enjoy your retirement & family Pete. You have giving so much to the game, we as fans bid you thanks & wish you well.
No, I think he should have a nice surprise for his wife:
"Honey... I am..."
"What... going to drink at the bar, with your buddies again?"
"No! I am going back on the tour... and leaving the kids with you."

pete is not at the same fitness level as the players on the tour.

and if he was to train for a major, will his body be strong enough for the all the matches?

talent is one thing, but fitness is another.
His fitness is not there, but his serves are. If he practices only for Wimbledon next year, his volleys will get even better... and the 1st and 2nd serve combo -- maybe even more consistent. Based on what I saw at the 3 matches, I think if he puts his mind to it, he can do very well at Wimbledon next year.

Connors made it to the semis of the '91 US Open at 39 years old. And he's a grinder which takes a lot more out of him physically than Sampras' serve and volley style which ends points very quickly so it doesn't take as much out of him.

I think so. If Sampras took a wildcard at Wimbledon next year I think he has a pretty good chance in winning it all. Federer even said after the 2nd exhibition that he could still be in the top 5 in the ATP tour so he proved he could beat Federer in his prime even today when he defeated him in an exhibition in which Federer tried his heart out. First things first, Sampras should play in the Davis Cup final against Russia. I think Pat McEnroe should replace James Blake as the #2 player for Sampras. Sampras was the main reason why the US won the Davis Cup in 1995 by winning 2 singles matches and 1 doubles match. It's time for Sampras to add another trophy to his collection.

If Sampras wants to come back and play Wimbledon than why not he should, he has more than earned the right to a wild card even if he is five years retired. One thing he shouldn't expect is anything near a run to the final. We all get what he WAS and how he USED to dominate Wimbledon but thats five years ago, and five years in tennis is forever. I have no problem with him coming back to play Wimbledon even if he plays nothing before hand and nothing after, he would be lucky to make it past the first round though and it is almost impossible that he would get past the third, lets not get to excited about these exhibitions with Fed, they are simply entertainment and nothing more

I think he'd beat gasquet and Roddick if he faced them in the semis or quarters. he doesnt do that much runnng, its just mainly whether he can recover in time between matches.
